"The Visual Bible: Matthew DVD" is a visual Bible using the 1984 New International Version translation of the gospel of Matthew. The dialogue and narration are directly from the gospel of Matthew, like an audio Bible, which means that events that Matthew didn't write about aren't shown. The costumes, settings, and actions attempt to give a visual idea of what it all might have looked like.
I liked that the actors played Jesus and the disciples like real people would act. The actor played Jesus as laughing and joyful when someone is healed, sad when people reject His message, playful when teaching (as some of his teachings contain humor!), and serious when appropriate. This is the type of Jesus that would draw crowds--the Jesus I know from the Bible. It's not perfect, but I really enjoyed watching it.
I'd recommend this resource as an enjoyable and thought-provoking way to "read" Matthew.

This movie shows Jesus in a way I had never seen before. Bruce Marchiano portrays Jesus so much like the Jesus I know and love. Jesus ,who laughs and loves and cares. I love that it is word for word scripture. Everyone should see this.

This portrayal has been not only our favorite since its release in the early '90's, but seems to be the most biblically sound.

I first bought this film on VHS and paid quite a bit for it. It was worth every penny. And now to own it on DVD at such a reasonable price is amazing. This is without doubt the best film on the life of Christ that I know about. We plan on buying another for our pastor who has just finished preaching through the book of Matthew. Bottom line: WE LOVE THIS FILM.

I owned the Matthew series on VHS previously, and wanted the DVD set for mly library. It is a great witnessing tool that portrays Jesus as a vibrant personality rather than a dull whimp. Ordering from CBD was a logical decision, because I knew from experience their price and customer service were excellent.

This movie is great in that it shows Jesus as a smiling Jesus, full of love and joy. As advertised, Matthew narrates, and it is word for word from the NIV Bible. I am well pleased with the purchase.

I cannot say enough about this.. it is all scripture, and the love and joy of Jesus shine through. All you can say when you're finished with it is " I KNEW Jesus was like that.. that's a Jesus I can love with my life."
Read Bruce marchiano's book " In the Footsteps of Jesus" along with the movie- how the movie was made is astounding. the Spirit was indeed moving on the set, and it shows in the movie..

This is a great movie. I really like how it follows the NIV version; that's great. There's a part in this movie where I had to hold my breath it was so frightening. I really had to examine my life in view of what I was watching. However, for the most part, I just fell more in love with Jesus all over again.

Because I will be having Bruce Marchiano on my radio show on October 11th 2011, I knew I needed to see this iconic film first before speaking with him. Now one common complaint I heard when researching this film was "the guy who plays Jesus is just way too smiley". Despite reading that complaint, I wanted to watch Matthew for myself because I loved the idea of seeing an entire gospel presented on film, critics can be harsher than what is reality, and Bruce's performance was just excellent in The Encounter. To describe what this movie is like in a very simple explanation, it is exactly as the title sounds.
Matthew is an epic presentation of the entire Gospel of Matthew; verse for verse. Some of the verses are specifically read by a narrator, who is an aged Matthew, while others are simply acted out by a particular actor or actress. Because of the length of material this is a two disc movie; originally it was a four VCR taped movie. This gospel presentation is based on the old NIV translation, not the new NIV that came out in 2010 obviously, and this movie came out in 1995. Now some might complain this movie is too long, but obviously it's going to be long considering it is the ENTIRE Gospel of Matthew verse for verse! Lol seriously though, I watched the entire presentation and took every thought I could dream up into account to be a fair critic and I felt there were certainly some good and bad things about this movie.
One good thing I liked about this movie was the sense of authenticity when it came to the scenery and people. Another thing I enjoyed about the movie was the narration from Richard Kiley (RIP), who played the aged disciple, and the other actors were for the most part very well done. Of course I am a bit mixed up on the smiling mentioned earlier in both a good and bad way. I felt the smiling was good in that I haven't always thought of Jesus Christ being someone who smiled often and I imagine he gave plenty of smiles to people so in that regard it was quite refreshing to see. However, there were also times when I said to myself "well I can see what they mean for this part" and maybe some parts it's questionable whether Jesus would have been smiling or not, but the thing about that is we don't know the exact way he said/did everything since we weren't literally there to see Jesus Christ doing all those events. Really the whole smiling argument thing some reviewers have talked about, I don't feel it hurts the movie much as there are going to be bits and pieces where you'll say "well I don't know if it would have happened exactly in that way." Overall I liked this film for the most part, there were lines that could have been said better and there were a few camera shots like where the demons go into the swine that could have been done better too, but other than some minor details I liked this movie and feel this is good for either educating someone about the gospel or for a Christian who just doesn't like to read very much.

I showed this video over a four week period to our youth group. The kids were 7th through 12th graders. They were completely engaged with it and asked great questions. I've also shown it to a much older group :) that also enjoyed it.The acting was excellent, especially considering that they did not add one word to the NIV text. I recommend it to all ages!!

This is the most realistic portrayal of Christ that I have ever seen. I feel as though God has given us a glimpse of Christ again. Experiencing this movie changed my whole view of Jesus; He is breathtaking! Also the book" In the Footsteps of Jesus", is an account of the details/events surrounding the filming. It shows what God was doing through this film project. The movie and or book is life changing.

I have seen more Biblical movies than the next guy, and I have to say...this is my FAVORITE "Jesus movie" ever! The way Bruce Marchiano shows the Love Jesus has for humanity is truly Spirit led, the joy on His (Jesus') face healing the sick...well it is a must see I have got to say. We buy loads of this film at a time and give them out as a ministry.

I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the Matthew and Acts DVDs. They portray Jesus as a kind and compassionate Savior who also has a sense of humor. He actually smiles and laughs, which I think is a more accurate portrayal of who He is! I prefer this movie about Jesus above any other I have seen. I used a portion of it alongside a Bible study I facilitate to help the ladies get a different perspective of how Jesus might have actually been. They loved it too!

The video sticks to the Biblical text. That part is great! However, the acting is very poor. It is not appropriate to show to the older generation. Even though it sticks to the text of the Bible, it is very culturally inappropriate. It is also not appropriate to show to the younger generation. They will mock it. The way Jesus is portrayed is so offensive -- so mushy.
