I read this book when I was in the military back in 1986. This book was such a breath of fresh air for me. At the time, I often felt guilty about not being a missionary or doing something spiritual for a career. After reading this book, my guilt melted away and the author did a great job of explaining his view about the subject. I definitely recommend this book to all Christians who might be struggling with whether they are doing "the will of God." I cringe everytime I hear this phrase in Christian circles.

The reason I have decided to give this book a five star rating is that Garry Frieson, the author of this book, does such an incredible job of presenting his wisdom-approach to the issue of hearing God's voice with sound Biblical interpretation. Time after time Frieson demonstrates his great ability as an expositor of the word. His arguments are so well reasoned and so well founded that one shouldn't simply dismiss his contribution to the discussion because of pretense. Where he departs from the traditional approach of hearing God's voice he gives solid evidence for his views. I should add that I am hard pressed to find any evidence that would disprove the majority of his statements and I do believe that his case is by far the most consistent of views on the subject. I am, however, still working through some of his unanswered questions concerning the spiritual gifts of wisdom and knowledge. I only wish Frieson had more books for us to read.

Friesen's book is the best treatment of the topic available. His thorough and practical approach clarifies the process for wise decisions. It is a challenge to the conventional method of finding God's will, so prepare to read with a teachable attitude. The author confronts the traditional approaches and then presents the practical application of Scripture as the alternative. I advise every Christian I know to add this to their library. It is a life changing book worthy of being taught and read regularly.

This book is most relevant for all Christians who believe that the Bible truly is an accurate account of communication from the true and living God to all of humanity. The topic is quite important and very relevant in day-to-day living. I believe that this book is the very best one ever written on the topic of "the will of God". The author, Garry Friesen, has written with an irenic spirit regarding those people who have a differing view. I had read the original edition over 20 years ago. Although that book was excellent, this one is even better. Friesen gives a detailed, clear and thorough refutation of the "perfect or individual will of God" theory. He says that the origin of this theory dates back only to about the year 1875. He then carefully analyzes the relevant passages of Scripture, and bases his general principles of the wisdom view directly upon them.A very useful 45-page appendix gives book reviews of 15 books written on this topic. One of the books reviewed is the popular "Experiencing God" by Henry Blackaby. The "critiques" given by Friesen further added to my previously-held conviction that the principles taught in Blackaby's book are in contradiction to the true teachings of Scripture. Throughout "Decision Making and the Will of God", there are various charts and diagrams which are quite helpful to remember the basic principles. The beneficial footnotes, which give further information of detailed discussions, exemplify the depth and breadth of the author's analysis of this topic. A lengthy Scripture index is provided. A study guide gives helpful insights about how to use this book as the basis for a group study. The book is long. However, for every Christian who sincerely desires to lead a life that is pleasing to God, this book is the very best one to use in order to learn the principles about how to make wise decisions.

The very best book on this subject I have ever read. Very scholarly, yet readable (a rare combination). Friesen, clearly a skilled exegete, does a thorough job of exposing the traditional will of God theory as a concept shot-through with flaws. His Biblically well-supported presentation decimates the concept of God's will most of us learned growing up in church, as well as providing a much better defined approach. Mr. Friesen reminds me a lot of Apollos in Acts 18: "...a learned man, with a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures." This book is worth twice the price. It may be the best book I've read this year, period! Buy it; you'll be glad you did.
