P & R Publishing Training Hearts, Teaching Minds

In each generation, the church's most critical task is to uphold and proclaim the truth as it was delivered by the Lord. One important aspect of this task is the dililgent preparation of the church's children to continue to be the support pillar of the truth in the generation to come. With Training Hearts, and Teaching Minds, teaching the Shorter Catechism to your family has never been easier. This book of daily readings contains a question and answer from the catechism with six days' worth of devotional readings for each question (with 107 questions total). We must fulfill our responsibility now, so that we will be able to say with assurance, as Paul said to Timothy, "Retain the standard of sound words which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus."

So far, I love this book. My children enjoy learning the questions and answers, plus the devotionals are good, but not too long. They are just the right length to keep their interest. I'm confident that using this book, we will all learn the Shorter Catechism together and they will have the answers they need when they are asked what they believe and why.

We are only on the third week but so far it has been wonderful. The family stays seated at the dinner table, and we read the devotion. I am always amazed at the ability of my children to soak up what they hear and read! They also come up with some pretty profound questions and comments on their own. I definitely recommend this book.

This book is an excellent tool for family devotions. As the title suggests, it hits both the heart and the mind. As a study of the WSC it is theologically rich. I enjoy using it with my own family and I heartily recommend it to others.

Most devotionals our family have tried are either too long, too short, or too shallow. This one is the only one we've tried that seems to be just right. As a father, I am commanded to be the spiritual leader of the home. This book has given me a good framework that I can use to teach my kids. I don't want to hand over that responsibility to my church, and have felt guilty in the past for passing the buck over to my wife to do so. No longer! This book has given me exactly what I need to teach the basics of the Christian faith to my family. I recommend it highly! We started it about 7 weeks ago and have been consistent with each lesson ever since. We have 5 children aged 11 down to 3 and all of them enjoy this devotion. We all look forward to Bible time at night now instead of the obligatory check list mentality we've had in the past.I've felt more like the spiritual leader I am supposed to be than ever before. Do yourself and family a favor, buy and use this book!

What is man's primary purpose? What is the reason for the 5th commandment? What is a sacrament? You and your family can memorize short answers to these and 104 other questions that make up the foundations of our Christian faith. This book presents each answer of the shorter catechism along with a short devotion and scriptures about it for each day of the week. Our 2 year old shouts with a smile: "Bible time!" when my husband reaches for this book and his Bible after dinner each night. It's the best resource I've seen for training all ages in the basics of the faith. Our 9 year old can recite all the answers we've studied word perfect and our 5 and 2 year olds chime in as they're able--it's astounding how much they can absorb! Here's the answer to the first question in the dialect of the 2 year old: "man's porpoise glorify God an joy Him EVER!" (Man's primary purpose is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.) You can't put a price on the effective catechizing of your children, but this one is certainly a GREAT deal. Don't leave it up to the church, Sunday school, VBS, or Awana to catechize your children (although those are all great reinforcements and invaluable for those children with unsaved parents.) God said in His Word that it's the PARENTS' job to teach their children (see Deut. 6). This book can make it easy and enjoyable!
