Multnomah Publishers, Inc. When the Day of Evil Comes

Soon after a "coincidental" encounter with an eerie, sickly-looking stranger, Dylan Foster's crisply ordered world seems to become a battlefield invaded with disturbing, mysterious events. How does she separate spiritual from earthly, angel from devil---and friend from foe? Will she discover that she is in the eye of heavenly warfare---requiring God's armor? 350 pages, softcover from Multnomah.

...I fail to understand how this novel honors Christ. The writing is excellent (much better than the writing of most Christian authors) and the story draws you in. BUT...in a VERY DARK way. If you're fascinated with demons and want to read about them then this book is for you. But I don't see much of a difference between the way the subject is presented here than in secular novels. I'm not a big fan of spending time reading about all things demonic so this book isn't/wasn't for me. I hope the author decides to use her considerable writing talent focusing elsewhere; perhaps choosing to show more of Jesus reflected in peoples' lives than on the demonic.

No doubt about it, Melanie Wells is one talented writer. Her plots are original and well-thought-out, her descriptions vivid and compelling. Character development, however is very much lacking, and the pace of the novel is rapid-fire banter between characters, with a pronounced lack of depth. Dylan Foster, the heroine, is sarcastic and self-absorbed. Written in the first person, almost every page contains musing on her free-spirited nature, and details on her faults, as if they make her unique and humorous. Every third page, it seems, details her obsessive-compulsive need to clean her house and alphabetize her pantry. I found it very hard to like Dylan Foster, and her flippant, irreverent references to God throughout the novel had me cringeing. She bemoans her lack of self-discipline in spiritual matters, explaining that she rarely prays, reads the Bible, or has quiet time, because she is not really a checklist kind of person. She doesn't know how to get rid of a demon who is plaguing her, and this turns into a strange, twisted humor throughout the novels.
I kept hoping this novel would get better, kept hoping each novel in the series would get better, and stuck with the novels because of that, despite putting each book down feeling slightly depressed and empty. Having finished the last one, tonight, I'm left with a bitter taste in my mouth, wondering, how exactly are these novels Christian? How exactly do these novels follow Christ? Multanomah Press, you failed to follow with these novels.

Really enjoyed getting to know this character. Fun first person writing, engages the reader into the life of this woman. She is a Christian woman who understands she needs Christ but so often forgets or choses not to spend time with HIM. Only when life throws her an unexpected demon does she start turning to and relying on God. Please don't expect to be inspired or grown in your faith by reading this book. It is a fictional story, not a devotional. There are no bad words, sex, or vivd violence. Would have no problem letting my young teen boy read this book. Captured my interest, kept me reading. Starting the next in the series.

My first novel by Melanie Wells will not be my last! The entire novel had such a conversational tone to it, you felt as though you were sharing a coffee with Dylan Foster while she shared her life! She was so likeable, self deprecating and genuine, it made her story even more appealing. The story itself...intense, suspenseful, a bit strange, but kept you wanting to find out what happens next! A fabulous read!

I am not a big reader. It takes a good book to keep me hooked, otherwise I will read a chapter, put the book down and never pick it up again. I finished this book in a few days!! It kept me interested and wanting to find out what was going on. I am looking forward to reading the next in the series.

I absolutely devoured this book. What I want to share is how much I enjoyed this book. I squeezed in reading while my husband took his contacts out before bed. Basically, if I could read When the Day of Evil Comes even for a moment, I did it. The story introduces us to Dr. Dylan Foster who is a psychology professor at SMU. Dr. Foster sounds like the kind of woman I would have aspired to be when I was growing up. She is strong, well educated, beautiful, and has direction. Dylan's main flaw might be that she is a bit disconnected from those around her. She seems to have few close ties. Life may be slightly predictable and a bit boring for Dylan, but that changes rather quickly after an afternoon picnic with her colleagues at a lake. From a meeting with a strange and rather creepy individual, Dylan finds herself on a path to possible personal destruction. Her usually ordered life is slowly coming unraveled with her professional ethics being questioned and her very career being put in jeopardy. Worse still she seems to be under some sort of spiritual attack, and that is far more difficult to get ahead of when you are accustomed to an orderly life where the rules are usually followed and most things are easily explained. This story had plenty of edge and mystery to keep me reading. It contained characters that were entirely realistic and believable. This is a book that kept me actively engaged from the very first chapter. Seriously, I did not want to put this down. There were some questions in the story that kind of left things up to the reader, but that could be so you can find out more in the other books in the series. Melanie Wells took me on a very interesting ride that I enjoyed thoroughly. I look forward to reading the second book "Soul Hunter" this week, and if it is anything like the first, I will be devouring "My Soul To Keep" the week after.

This is a series filled with suspense! It helps you to realize that there are forces in our world that we can't see or touch, but they are there. The Bible tells us in Ephesians 6:10-18 that "our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand." An interesting word "stand", as used in the Bible. How many times does God admonish us to stand??? There must be something deep and profound in that little word!!! I think this three book set is well worth the read.

I really liked this book! I was suprised to find that it was funny, interesting, supenseful and even a little scary. I give it a lower score because of the loose ends that I felt needed to be tied up. I'm not one to love series books but I am looking forward to number 2.

Book very quickly gets your interest and keeps you connected as new twists are added to the story. However, there were a few elements that seemed to connect to the main idea that are left hanging at the end. I had some unfinished questions when I got to the end that I wish had been answered. Maybe another 50-100 pages would have tied up some of the lose ends about Dylan, the main character, and how this entire story involved her would have helped. It would have also been good to expound on the weapons we have at our disposal as followers of Christ to combat spiritual warfare, such as using Ephesians 6 more in depth. One thing, though, is this may alert some to the idea that spiritual warfare is real and around us everywhere. Suggest continued reading of Frank Perretti.
