ESV Personal Size Study Bible--Portfolio Trutone Design (2016 text edition)

I recently received my copy of the 2016 text edition of the ESV Personal Size Study Bible in the Portfolio/Walnut Trutone design. This Bible came in perfect condition and is exactly what I was looking for to replace my "standard size" ESV Portfolio/Walnut design study Bible--for increased portability.

I love many attributes of this Bible: lays flat (after using it for a bit, doesn't take much for it to lay flat), black letter text, size 7.7pt font is very readable in a single column layout (I would recommend Crossway's other Study Bibles with larger font if small font is a problem for you), ribbon marker, and much more!

I am definitely a fan of Crossway's Trutone bindings, but have been spoiled with some of their higher end bindings recently (top grain leather and goatskins). With that said--I would still HIGHLY recommend their trutone leather and not let that deter you from purchasing this Bible.

I also have a friend that is very happy with the cloth over board w/ royal imprint version of this ESV personal size study Bible. I would recommend that one as well.

Lastly, the 2016 text addition seemed to have re-added the extra articles that Crossway's standard size study bible has--I believe the 2011 versions removed this to save on size.

You will be getting a lot more than a Bible with cross references with this Bible--you will get a TON of commentary and bonus articles/theology.

Lastly, it is still somewhat big for being a personal size, but compared to other personal size study bibles of other translations, it is definitely in line with a typical "personal" size study Bible.

I saw some other comments that said this Bible had too small of text and a weak spine. On the contrary, i have horrible vision and i think the text is just the right size. I suppose the footnotes are a little small but nothing out of the ordinary. I am currently a student and I was looking for a Bible that would truly advance my knowledge of the Word, and this Bible has the capacity to do just that. I think this Bible has everything one could possibly want from a Bible, the footnotes and/or commentary is both theological and personal. I find that in some study Bibles the commentary is purely personal, which is ok, it's just not very in depth and educational. In this Bible you will find the footnotes/commentary enhancing your historical, linguistic, and theological understanding of the text, and also the necessary instruction one might need to become more personal and intimate with God. I would certainly recommend this Bible for everyone, laymen and academics alike.

This is one of the best study bibles that I have encountered! I have personally used many of them, including the NIV study bible, MacArthur study bible, NLT Life App study bible, HCSB study bible... and the list goes on and on. But the ESV study bible is by far the greatest resource contained in such a small package. The commentary is spot on and very informative and in-depth. The outlines, charts and articles are extremely helpful for one's understanding of biblical concepts... and the colored pictures help the reader form mental imagery to draw you into the setting. The ONLY gripe that I have with the personal sized version is the lack of the additional articles in the back of the bible... they are not needed for ones grasp of the Scriptures but are so immensely valuable for deeper study of it. And the translation itself (ESV) is a great read! I have compared it to the KJV, NIV, NASB and NLT and it is perfect for any reader. Close to the word order of the KJV and NASB for easy transition and grammar study. And helpful like the NIV in obscure texts to promote understanding. The level of scholarship that went into this bible cannot be summed up in this review. This is an incredible tool and I have personally seen 7+ people overwhelmingly satisfied with it.

I bought this for myself but found the font too small for my 67 year old eyes. So I gave it to my daughter and she is thrilled with it. I ended up ordering the large print version for myself. We are both very happy with the ESV Bible and all the fantastic study notes, references and maps. It will take a life time to go through it all as it is an amazing Bible. We both highly recommend it to anyone.

    My new ESV study bible

I used to be a steadfast NIV reader, but recently learned that the company publishing it have gone the way of the world and are no longer going to make it the way it's supposed to be. May the Lord convict them of their waywardness and bring them back before it's too late :( ESV is the translation my church uses most frequently and so that's what I've switched to
