I have to admit, I have not previously read any of the Sisterchicks' books. But I can tell you, after reading this devotional I can't wait to read more!
This book was jam-packed, cover to cover, with emotional and inspirational stories of life and grace. Some of them may bring a smile to your lips or tears to your eyes. And some of them will just make you hug your loved ones. It's filled with personal stories that everyday people can relate to.
There was one particular day where I was just off. And by off I mean stressy, sassy and feeling sorry for myself. During my quiet-time I picked up my Sisterchicks' Devotional and started reading. Within miutes I was in awe of how that days devotional fit my day. I would says I was suprised but that's kinda how God works. I found myself inspired, lifted up and spent some prayer "talk time" with God afterwards.There are so many ideas in the book that can help with self-esteem and having a positive attitude. I would recommend the book to everyone, and I can even see myself giving a copy of the book to a friend as a gift.

I thought this book was very inspirational and thought provoking. However, it just wasn't really my style. It honestly had a lot of bird references which I should have expected. I feel that maybe this would be a great devotional for middle-age + woman. I would recommend it out to others, it just wasn't my cup of tea!!
It was short and easy to read.

TAKE FLIGHT - Sisterchicks in the Word by Robin Jones Gunn & Cindy Hannan is a Christian devotional book for women where you can find examples of God's grace, as well as answers to questions about life experiences through ordinary stories and relatable Biblical verses. The kind of experiences where "women can open their hearts to each other" (p.7) and hear the God-centered answers that "nudge" them into deeper reflections.
**Sorry guys, this one is for the ladies. We're not saying that there isn't any value in their pearls of wisdom, but we don't think this book will be lying around your man cave.
So what is a Sisterchick? What is grace? And how does this book connect the dots?
• A "Sisterchick" is a whimsical concept of sisterly bonding defined as a "friend who shares the deepest wonders of your heart, loves you like a sister, and gives you a reality check when you're being a brat." (p.7)
• Grace is "the free and unmerited favor of God, as manifested in the salvation of sinners and the bestowal of blessings." (www.oxforddictionaries.com)
• The stories connect the dots because the "remind us that even in moments that seem graceless, God's hand kept you from tumbling into oblivion." (p.7) and we get to see how God's grace is interwoven and intertwined in various scenarios and situations.
Complete with a series of adventurous stories to tell the world, TAKE FLIGHT is a devotional book in the Sisterchick movement (bet you didn't know there was such a thing!).
These are not stories only about grace, but about courage and chance encounters that really aren't random coincidences. Heidi Quade once said, "A coincidence is a small miracle where God chose to remain anonymous."
According to the authors, this is a spiritual journey of female travel-buddies and spirit-filled adventure companions.
What is refreshing about the book TAKE FLIGHT is that the authors take a different approach to the traditional "devotional time" format of plain old daily verses from the Bible. Instead you get a nice spin and find "From Robin's Nest" which sets the tone for the stories. "From Cindy's Perch" is where she reflects on each story with encouraging observations.
However, a devotional book wouldn't be a devotional book without the tried-and-true thoughtfully selected Biblical verses that support, explain, encourage, reinforce, reflect, discern and/or understand how the Word connects the story with daily life. This section is appropriately entitled "Take a Closer Look." The real key takeaways are the suggestions to strengthen your friendships with your "soul-sisters" in unique ways - "like making the time to have lunch with a friend who needs a new dream...listening is the first language of loving." (p.26).
The ladies share experiences about women connecting and being connected to God can help get you back on track. Each story, each question, every answer, has one goal in mind-to bring you closer to God. In order to do that you must "examine the voices in your head. Do they bring you closer to God or pull you away from Him?" (p.33). The only criticism we had, was the choice to use black and white pictures. The pictures weren't of the best quality and didn't add any value to the quality of the book.
If prayer or spirituality is an important part of your life but you have become lackadaisical in your daily devotion and there are many ways you may want to create a new daily routine that helps you stay on point. Give TAKE FLIGHT a second look, it is written in a thoughtful, kind and loving way that has the potential to uplift you as many times as you need it.
THOUGHTS for your SOUL:
• One of the wonderful characteristics of a true friendship is that it can survive separation, both by time and distance. (What encouraging words from a friend still ring in your ears? Is there someone in your life who needs your love and acceptance right now? He [God] might just wrap up His grace and send it through you.) (p.39).
• Don't let fear make the decisions for you. (p.56).
• When a woman knows she's loved, she can do anything. She grows stronger in her sweet and abiding affection for the One who loves her. (p.79).

I have enjoyed each of the Sisterchicks novels written by Robin Jones Gunn and was very happy to be given an opportunity to review this devotional. Thanks to the WaterBrook Multnomah Blogging For Books program for providing me a copy for an honest review.
If you have read the books, you will recognize a few quotes scattered throughout the book and they are sure to bring back fond memories. If you haven't (and you need to start soon!), you will still love this book. It is filled with stories of shared adventures with friends, quotes, photos, Scripture, and places to jot down what is on your mind. There are also suggestions of things you can do with, or for, a Sisterchick. The 2 authors work together well in sharing things from a personal perspective. I loved From Robin's Nest and From Cindy's Perch and the insight each brought. This book is filled with wit and wisdom that you are sure to enjoy on your own or as part of a devotion time with a Sisterchick or two...or a whole flock of them.

I love to read books and collect quotes from them. I have a notebook that I use specifically for book quotes. I have to say that I have more quotes from the Sisterchick books than any other books I have read. Robin Jones Gunn is definitely a gifted author, and I love the wisdom and Truth that her words speak to me. So I was very excited to read her devotional book that she co-authored with her dear friend Cindy Hannan.
According to the book, a SISTERCHICK is "a friend who shares the deepest wonders of your heart, loves you like a sister, and provides a reality check when you're being a brat." Who doesn't need sisterchicks in her life?
What I love about this devotional is that each chapter begins with a quote from one of the sisterchick books. Then the authors take turns sharing stories and wisdom from real life and the Bible. At the end of each devotional they share a practical application for everyday life. {What good is learning something new then having no way to apply it?}
I think this would be a great devotional book to buy one for yourself and give another one to a friend. The two of you could read this book and talk about it over coffee at Starbucks! {one of my favorite places to meet and talk!}
*I received a copy of this book in exchange for my review from blogging for books. The opinions are mine.*

My old college roommate and I went on our first sisterchicks adventure in September 2007 and took this book along as our devotional. I loved it! It was funny and heartwarming and dealt with topics today's American women deal with on a daily basis. It made us stop and think and reevaluate what we were doing and why we were doing it in our walk with our Lord. And it was chocked full of Robin's famous "grace" moments! And sometimes it stepped on our toes, but we needed that, too. It really made us stop and be in "awe" of all God does for us. I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting a closer walk with God, but especially to those others who are inspired by Robin Jones Gunn's way of writing and challenging us to dig deeper in our daily attempts to be more Christ-like.
