Westminster John Knox Press Christian Doctrine: Revised Edition

A classic revised! One of the clearest and most popular expositions of Protestant teaching and doctrine in print. Helps take the mystery out of the attributes of God, the incarnation, sanctification, the Holy Spirit, and the resurrection. Includes helpful questions for reflection.

A best-seller for more than thirty years, Christian Doctrine has introduced thousands of laity, students and theologians to the tenets of the Christian faith. This revised edition reflects changes in the church and society and takes into account new works in Reformed theology, gender references in the Bible, racism, pluralism, ecological developments, and liberation theologies.

The fact that this is a "revised" edition makes me want to read the originial edition all the more. Overall, this was an interesting book, and I got a few things out of it. Some parts are really great, and some parts are a little dry. The gender-neutrality throughout the book is a little annoying.

Currently I am in a group studying doctrines of the Protestant church using a study written by J. Ellsworth Kalas called "Christian Believer: Knowing God with Heart and Mind". Guthrie's book was purchased by many of us as a supplement. It is written in a clear, almost conversational manner, perfect for the beginner. The author uses many illustrations and approaches doctrinal study with respect and great interest, all of which is contagious for the reader.
