This is the year I decided to actually read through the Bible in one year. I have intended to do it before, but haven't actually done it. I am doing it with a chronological Bible. I thought it would be cool to read the Bible in the order that things happened (more or less.) This guide works with any translation, and provides time lines, maps, history, and tons of background (cultural) information. The Bible is divided into nine epochs of time, beginning with creation and the ninth is the church age and apocalyptic writings. It is a great reference book to keep nearby. Almost 6 months into the year, I have really enjoyed reading the Bible this way. I have a new found understanding of many verses from the Bible were either confusing or just never stood out to me before. I will definitely use this book to help me get the most out of my Bible study!

You probably have a favorite Bible that you are already using and taking notes in. It would be nice to be able to use the familiar to get a new perspective. That is where the Chronological Guide to the Bible comes in.This is not just a list that has you hopping back and forth within those 66 sacred writings. It will help you place your reading within the history of the people of God in the various eras of civilization that the Bible encompasses. The Chronological Guide will let you work with what is familiar to you and, you can use more than one translation along with the guide, to get you through those sticky sections. The Chronological Guide is appealing to the senses. I like books that feel and look good when I am studying. The paper is high quality. This is not your boring text book. There are pictures along with informative text. Maps locate the areas you are reading about. What did the fishing boats of Jesus time look like? See for yourself at the beginning of the section about Jesus advent. Want to see Hezekiahs Tunnel. Thats in the Chronological Guide. Artists renditions of the events in the Bible help us focus our thoughts and visualize what it might have been like. This is a book I will keep close to my Bible.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I love this book. I like the pictures, the historical information of the times, the archaeology information and even the coloring of the pages...beautiful. The only draw back that I can think of is that the type could be larger to be easier to read.

It can be difficult to find a chronological Bible with just the right features and in a preferred translation. Some include commentary, others dont. Enter the Chronological Guide to the Bible: Explore Gods Word in Historical Order. Its a guide written by 13 contributors that can be used with any translation of the Bible. This guide includes a reading guide with passages listed in order and it accompanies the readers own Bible. It includes little check boxes next to each passage in case the reader wants to read through the entire Bible in order or it can be used to read scripture from specific eras. The authors divide the Bible into nine epochs of time. The book is attractive in full color with images on every other page. Im impressed by the amount of information included. Each epoch section in the book includes a visual time line showing when events happened as well as a time capsule listing significant events. There is background story about books of the Bible that relate to the culture of the time. There are outlines of each book and commentary on main themes in each epoch that read like mini historical articles. The top of each page lists the historical century for each epoch, making it easy to find information. Its packed with information and a fantastic resource for anyone who wants to study the Bible in more detail. The only thing I suggest could have been added to the book is a single page list of the chronological order for a quick checklist for reading. This would save the reader some searching through the book. I received a free review copy of this book from Thomas Nelson publishers in exchange for my fair and honest review.

It may seem unseeming to read at the beginning, but basically I find it a useful tool though I don't think I will really be using it much. The book is arranged in Epoch's - A time frame. My favourite is Epoch 8, where there is a chronological reading for the gospels. If you were to arrange it according to the guide provided, you get a account of the Lord's ministry till the resurrection.Honestly, I would say it will be a more useful tool for people who want and have and want to make the time to spend to study the bible this way. I would suggest reading the gospels from the chronological order in Epoch 8. For first time readers of the bible, this would be a great tool to read the bible. My review is based more on Epoch 8 of the book.God bless.

This was a book I was eager to get and dig into. I am a self-professed Bible geek so I figured it would be right up my alley. I was impressed with the level of detail provided by the authors. The attention to historical detail was quite a feat. I liked that the book parallelled secular and biblical history together. The multitude of charts, pictures and timelines adds to the book. One negative was the writing style. There were several sections that were difficult to read and fully understand. I found myself having to re-read paragraphs to grasp what the authors were trying to convey. It's not an easy read by any stretch. Another negative is the lack of a condensed version of the chronological guide. Each epoch is listed but there was not a compilation so there would be no easy way to read through the Bible chronologically without flipping through multiple pages. I was also disappointed by the somewhat high price. At $25 before tax for a paperback reference book, I would put it back. It would be great if you are a teacher or serious Bible student but it's not really worth the money. This review was provided as part of my participation in the book review program with Thomas Nelson Publishers.

The Chronological Guide to the Bible: Explore Gods Word in Historical Order, is a lengthy title, but one word needs to stand out to you, history. The text located within the pages of this guide is dripping with the historical context often lost when reading the Bible in its present format. Pick this resource up and dive head first into the historically rich text that gives Gods story more depth for the everyday reader. It breaks the Bible down into nine epochs (a period of time in history or a person's life, typically one marked by notable events or particular characteristics,) that provide a clear timeline for the events of the Bible that are chronologically relevant to one another. For example, Epoch five provides the context of the Neo-Assyrian Empire. In the reading guide it goes as follows: 2 Kings 14:23-29, Jonah 1:1-4:11, Amos 1:1-9:15, etc. As you can see to gain the context for this time period numerous voices within Gods story are needed. Amos, Jonah and others provide different lenses for us to see the events that take place within the meta-narrative that is the Bible. Each chapter of the Bible is given an introduction and explanation as to why it is placed where it is not only in this text, but why it is placed where it is in the Bible as well. I really enjoyed the breakdown of the two viewpoints of the Exodus, with no weight placed on either one, just an explanation of both. The text is written in a way that allows for any translation of the Bible to be partnered with it.Pick up this book if you are a teacher of Gods word, as it will give you a clearer, more historical and a deeper understanding to Gods meta-narrative, The Bible.

I was provided a copy of The Chronological Guide to the Bible from Thomas Nelson Publishing to review. This book is a reference guide to the Bible and will work with any translation. Here are some of the features of the book:*Nine epochs of history that all the books of the Bible are divided into.*A summary for each book of the Bible.*A chronological reading guide*Maps*Cultural, historical, and archeological information for each time period.*Explanations of Biblical practices*TimelinesI thought that this book is well put together and a great reference tool! There is so much background information packed into the guide! This is a great resource for someone studying a certain book or wanting an overview of the Bible. I will be using it as a reference guide with my kids as we read different passages. The one downside to this guide is the price. It retails for $24.99 in paperback form. There a little over 200 pages so that is quite pricey for the size of the book.

The Chronological Guide to the Bible walks the reader through the Bible book by book. Each section contains historical information pertaining to the events of that book, as well as a timeline and summary of the book's individual background. The Chronological Guide to the Bible definitely adds a great deal of background information to Biblical reading. Timelines, summaries, further information, commentary style, help fill in the full picture of what each particular Biblical era looked like. The information seems reputable and I have seen no disagreements with Scripture. With that said, I was disappointed with how short each section is. The Bible does have 66 books, but each related section is only 3-4 pages in this guide. In addition, while there are sometimes pictures of particular items being explained, there are no maps of the changing borders boundaries, or travels taken at any time. Being able to see how this part of the world changed during Biblical times would have enhanced this book greatly. The Chronological Guide itself is of very high quality. With thick, glossy pages and full color illustrations, the book is beautiful. This book would be a wonderful addition for a new Christian or for someone trying to read through the Bible for the first time; but if you're interested in studying the Bible chronologically, a Chronological Bible may be more helpful.I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC's 16 CFR, Part 255.

For those interested in the Bible and History, this is the book for you. This is a study supplement for the Bible. It helps with your reading through the Old Testament and it works for any translation. It has full color pages (for those of us that still have that childish love for pictures on every page), a very narrative approach to reading the bible, and a huge stress on the historical context in which each book is written. The book has a very modern feel to it. Despite the modern feel to the book, however, the reader is assured that all arguments for the chronological ordering of the books and the history surrounding them will be presented in an unbiased way. The book explains that the Old Testament is centered in history. It uses historical events to reach a specific audience. And this is exactly what makes the Bible so very different from any other belief of its time. It extensively explores the history of the Bible. Overall, the book is very good. It is excellent for exploring the historical context of the time and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to deepen their historical knowledge of the Bible. If format, design and layout were the criteria used for judging this book, it would be worthy of the highest recommendation. But ultimately, books must be judged on their contentespecially biblical reference books. And the content of this book is weak. In an attempt to appeal to the broadest audience possible, the editors chose to present most matters of biblical authorship and dating as open to question. In the case of debated issues this biblical guide avoids presenting a single, biased, perspective. Rather it treats evenhandedly the entire spectrum of credible opinion on disputed mattersboth the views of traditional, conservative Bible students and those of modern, critical scholarship. The only dates and data that are represented concretely is the particular interpretation of archaeological data they present. The entire spectrum of credible opinion is not considered and particular interpretations of archaeological data are presented as indisputable facts. Meanwhile, everything from the route of the Exodus to single authorship of Isaiah to dating The Revelation is called into question. Many informational inclusions are incomplete and misleading at best. For example, the Gilgamesh Epic is presented as being very similar to the flood account in Genesis, when they are in fact completely dissimilar. Likewise, the book of Job is compared to Mesopotamian Jobs when in actuality, the stories are opposite in meaning. Those are but two of the many examples of inaccurate or misleading historical facts placed alongside the debatable historicity of Scripture. In its quest for unbiased evenhandedness, this book is helpful to few and, due to its biased inaccuracies, has the potential for harm.Thomas Nelson provided me with a complimentary copy of this book to review. In no way did that influence my opinion of the book or my review.

When I received the Chronological Guide to the Bible for review from Thomas Nelson Publishers I was very excited. I've always been interested in when in history events from the Bible took place. I am a visual learner, so having this book has really helped me with my studies. I enjoyed the time lines that show the progression through out history. It has helped me see how different events follow another. This book is broken down into 9 different time periods or epochs. It is so much easier for me to read something and know when exactly it happens. I also like the different "extras" through out the book, maps, time capsules, outlines and the chronological reading guide for each Epoch (time period). The book can be used with any version of the Bible you have. There are pictures through out the book showing different artifacts that have been located. I enjoy seeing these items and being able to go into scripture to see where they might have used them. It is not to replace your Bible...it is to be used as a tool as you study the scripture and learn what God has for your life. This book was provided to me by Thomas Nelson Publishers for review.

Receiving a complimentary copy of the Chronological Guide to the Bible from Thomas Nelson publishers was a real blessing. This incredible resource can be used with whichever translation of the Bible that you choose. It breaks the Bible down and reorganizes it into 9 epochs of time. Reading guides are included so that you can read your own Bible in chronological order. The entire book comes in full color presentation with charts, time lines, and feature articles. The quality of content and construction will certainly handle a lot of use.The historical context in which the Psalms were written, prophesies delivered, and other Old Testament events are all clearly arranged. The ministry of Jesus, as well as how the letters of the apostles fit into the narrative of the book of Acts, can be seen in their timely order. Everything is easy to access. It is as if the contributors anticipated questions you would have, and had the answers prepared, waiting for you to discover them.

Ever wanted to know how to study the Bible in chronological order? The Chronological Guide to the Bible is the perfect tool to be used for that purpose. This useful resource has book introductions as well as a timeline to show what is happening during the time the book was written as well the events that happened in the book. It also has a readers guide so you can read the passages of scripture as you get a grasp on what is happening not only historically but chronologically as well. If you have the Chronological Study Bible which is available in the New King James Version, you already have the notes, introductions, and timelines this book has. One thing that is great about this guide is it does not matter what translation of the Bible you use, this tool can be helpful in your study of the Bible.

The Chronological Guide to the Bible, published by Thomas Nelson publishing is an excellent biblical resource. It compares favorably to other Bible handbooks such as Haley's. The difference is the focus on chronology rather than book by book synopsis. Based on the Chronological Study Bible, it offers a wealth of information to suppliment Bible reading and helps the reader put all of scripture into it's historical context. The guide divides the Bible into nine "epochs" beginning with Genesis 1=-11 in the first epoch and ends with Revelation in the ninth epoch. Timelines, color illustrations, book outlines, maps and a wealth of articles can be found in this volume. Most importantly, of course, is a chronological reading plan. For those who might be uncomfortable with the idea of reading the Bible chronologically, the introduction offers a helpful explanation of how scholars arrive at their decisions for what order scripture is put in. One drawback is that the reading plan is scattered throughout the guide and some of the smaller readings get lost on the page. It might have been helpful to repeat the plan in the back of the book and perhaps have offered it in a one or two year reading format. I recommend this guide for anyone interested in reading the Bible in it's actual historical order. Thanks to Thomas Nelson Publishing for providing a free copy of this book through their Book Sneeze program.

This book exceeded my expectations. I have wanted to compare secular history with the Bible for years, and this book presented that comparison wonderfully. It is difficult, at least for me, to read the Bible and try to place the times in context with other events in history. The authors set out to, and I believe successfully presented history as close as possible to Biblical events. The Chronological Guide to the Bible begins with a brief overview and explanation of why the canonical order of the Bible was rearranged. Next, the authors provide a disclaimer of sorts for why they chose to relate certain events in history with Biblical events where no clear date was established. The book is divided into 9 Epochs [spans of time]. Each Epoch is then presented with timelines, maps, photographs, and Biblical outlines. A chronological reading guide is also included so the reader may read and check-off the affiliated books or chapters of the Bible covered in the related Epoch. As The Chronological Guide to the Bible does not quote Biblical text, this book can be utilized with whichever translation of the Bible the reader chooses to parallel the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who, like me, wants an enhanced understanding of the context and historical background of what was happening outside the framework of the Bible. This is a great book for teens through adults and opened my eyes to several interesting facts that put the history in Bible in better perspective.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their book review bloggers program.
