More cheese than I care to eat.

First, let me say what I liked about the DVD series... I liked that the women in the video discussion group were real...not hand selected Hollywood stars. They were all beautiful, of course, but not such unattainable loveliness that you couldn't take them seriously. It was easier to relate. They were honest, raw, and transparent. The topics they covered were universal; applicable to a wide range of women. I also loved the PDF of the Bible verses that came along with the DVD set. Those verses are WONDERFUL, and the PDF had them beautifully made so that you could print them out in color on card stock. Now, the constructive criticism... Although I love the book, and as a matter of fact, it has been the one resource that I can honestly say has allowed me the ability to make it over 20 years with my non-christian husband, I cannot love the DVD series. It is way to...cheesy...for me to recommend to anyone else. They did succeed in giving the series that twist in scenery by changing up the normal routine where the author speaks to a large audience, but as the small group discussion setting was original, it was also very dramatic. I like a good drama, but even this was a bit much for me. The ladies were very animated and "touchy feel-ly". All mics were on all the time, so while one person shared with the group, you could hear all the other ladies sighing or murmuring with concern while one or two of the friends were rubbing an arm or a knee. While there is nothing wrong with this among friends...it is very distracting, especially when you don't have any friendship connection with any of the ladies yourself. My teenage daughters and I found it easier to just lay back on the couches and look at the ceiling or close our eyes. It was more bearable as an audio discussion than a video. I had a study guide to go with the DVDs, but it required too much homework to go along with it. We didn't use it. I originally got this DVD to show with a Ladies Only small group at church, but I am glad I viewed it first. I believe they would have fired me. I will continue to rave about the books Staci writes, but not this.

Review 2 for Captivating: Unveiling the Mystery of a Woman's Soul - DVD

I really wanted to love this study, I would even settle for liking it. Not happening. I absolutely love the book. I think every woman on earth should read the book. I have never read anything like it for women and I cannot express how valuable a resource it is. If you haven't read it, do it now! It is a book that will heal your heart instead of just fill your head or set you up for failure with an unmanageable system, like so many other books geared towards woman do. With that said, I am seriously disappointed in the study, both the videos and the study guide. First of all I was bothered that the study is designed with the expectation that every woman reads the book entirely before the 10 week study and then rereads it during the 10 weeks. That is way to much to ask from a busy lady. With that expectation they then arranged some of the weeks/chapters in the study so that it is not sequential (beginning to end). That made more work for me. My ladies were not able to read the book in advance so I had to make a detailed schedule of the reading and work. I sat down and figured out which pages in the study would match their sequential reading of the book. I don't feel the content of the study guide was anything special. Next, the videos are not well executed. They are WAY too long and really not that good. They are at best a time filler. I was expecting, or I should say hoping for, a brief yet powerful teaching to add to our reading/work and to stimulate discussion time. The videos take us into the discussion time of a group of women, including Stasi Eldredge. Why would we watch something we could just do ourselves? There was no new teaching or revelation and some of the stories were ones we had already read about. I only showed the videos a few times and edited them down. The only video we enjoyed in full was the week with the men in it. I must tell you I am typically a glass-half-full kind of girl and I can usually get something out of anything...but not this study. Maybe it was because I loved the book so much, and I could almost see and taste how great the study COULD be... I recommend you read the book and if you feel led to do a study on it, don't fuss with the DVDs and study guide. Either make your own study(do you have the time, because I don't) or scrap it entirely and just have a book discussion and let Holy Spirit lead it for you. That is pretty much what ours evolved into.
