Nelson’s Biblical Cyclopedic Index has proven to be an excellent resource in Bible study and sermon preparation. I enjoyed this tool as part of The Open Bible study bible I had, but it’s nice to have it in a stand-alone format. This book is essentially an alphabetical subject index for the Bible, and as such should work well when studying with any Bible translation. This book is an asset for anyone preparing sermons, Bible studies, or Sunday School, or even for someone who regularly encounters questions as an active witness for Christ.
I found the book very easy to use, and fairly comprehensive. The organization of the book makes sense, and includes names and place names, as well as ample references and examples. There are also Word-studies scattered through the book that are also succinct, but helpful. The typeface is easy to read, although the print on my copy was very small. There is also a helpful guide in the front of the book that illustrates how to get the best use out of this reference tool. I can highly recommend this reference book for any student of the Bible.

I bought this as a gift and may buy one for myself. The old NASB Open Bible used to have a very similar cyclopedic index in the front. Obviously not as lengthy as this book but it was rather impressive. They took it out and many are disappointed that we have to buy a separate book to get a good reference.
This makes a nice gift and is small enough to fit in a med-large pocketbk.

This is one of the most helpful books I have ever had. We were using it in a Bible Study last week, and found everything we needed. I love the size. The big concordance is not as easy to use, and we found everything that was necessary for your study in this book.

I chose this Nelson´s Biblical Cyclopedic Index, which I wanted to give to my husband. But at the end I think, we will use it both :-)
Whole book is a great tool for finding perfect verses in the Bible. Everything is in Alphabetical Order so everthing is easy and quickly to find. Individual words are sorted according to their importance so it´s not difficult to navigate in the Bible and find the right verses.
I tried it to use it. I made wedding card for my friends and I wanted to use some nice verses from the Bible. I know that famous part is in 1.Corinthians, but I wanted to see if I find something else for use. So I found word Love. There is a small Word Study with greek translation.
Next you find unit like Love-Christian with subheads "Toward God", "Toward Christ", "Toward others" where you can find simple description and link to right verse. Next unit was Love-Christ with subheads "Objects of", "Described as", "Expressions of". Another unit was Love of God with subheads "Objects of", "Described as" and "As seen in belivers´s". And at the end is Love, physical.
So, if I looked for right verse for my card, I went this way: Love Christian - Toward others - described in details - 1.Cor.13:1-13.
I like it and this book is really good tool for Bible study. For me and also for you.

Nelson’s Biblical Cyclopedic Index is a great tool for anyone that is writing a paper, studying the bible of working on a lesson or sermon. The book arrived a bit smaller then I thought when I first requested it, but it packs a mighty punch for its size.
With over 8000 subjects, names, things, places, events and more this little book is great for anyone. When you find the topic you are looking for, there are scripture references and some even have the definition of what the word meant in Hebrew or Greek.
Overall there is not a lot to say about this little book then everyone who is looking into the Word of God should have one by their side. It helps to cross reference and give sub categories of the words you are looking up. I highly recommend this book and it should be in everyone’s collection.

Nelson’s Cyclopedic Index is an alphabetical word index of words and ideas with Biblical origin. Or, in some cases, words that are refuted by Scripture. For example, the word ‘evolution’ is listed with one possible definition (the popular one today): “development of life from lower to higher forms.” Under this particular word listing is “A. Conflicts with: God’s description…Gen. 1:26, 27, 2:21-25, Moses record…Ex. 20:11, Deut. 4:32, B. Not accepted by: Jesus [references], Paul [references listed].” With regard to words that are used in the Bible, this Cyclopedia defines the word and features lists of topics of possible interest and Biblical references. This Cyclopedia claims to be the best Bible subject index ever (on the cover) and it may be that, but it is not an exhaustive listing of all Biblical references related to a word such as what a good concordance would supply (Strong’s or Young’s). Nevertheless, I believe that its word list could be very valuable in Bible study, reference or in searching for a verse to share with someone who is despairing over something such as death of a loved one or personal sickness. When I looked under the word ‘hope’ for example, many listings and subject subheadings were listed with Biblical references.
This is an undersized book measuring about 5 3/8″ x 7″ x 1″ thick. I enjoyed examining the book and comparing it to words for which I was already very familiar and thought it was very accurate and representative of what the Bible says. Since I didn’t complete an exhaustive evaluation of the book, I can’t say that every entry is absolutely true. Further, I am unable to determine who wrote and compiled the book other than Thomas Nelson Publishers which makes it sort of anonymous and multi-denominational which could be a good thing. One interesting and value-added piece of work in this little book is the occasional word study whereby one or two words are examined with a little more depth in sort of a sidebar concept on many of the pages throughout the Cyclopedia. In these word studies, Nelson shares the Greek or Hebrew transliteration to English and the pronunciation which would be much more helpful in my view if they had stated which language they are citing (Greek or Hebrew). However, they do share the Strong’s numbers on all the word studies which I thought was helpful. In the end, I think I will find this book to be very useful and have added it to my shelf of reference books (Strong’s, Young’s, Wigram’s, Interlinear, etc…) for regular use.

I was quite surprised when I received this book in the mail from booksneeze, I had thought it would probably be a good book for my husband (Who is a pastor) to have in his library. However after looking into I've found that I'm now using it during my devotional times as well! Its a fantastic tool (for both me and my husband, lol) giving guides to different scriptures based on the different topics or references.
Also, not only are we using it for both my husband's preaching and my own personal Bible studying, We're finding that we've used it to look up scriptures for our children's church lessons, or our women's/men's Bible studies. It is such a great resource for so many area's in our ministry!! Honestly, this one book has probably cut down by an hour the amount of time online I spend trying to search out scriptures. A very valuable resource and one I'll strongly recommend to anyone involved in ministry!

How many times in your life have you thought to yourself or said to a friend... "I know the Bible says ... but I need to go back and look that up." -I've done that many times. I want to know not only where that particular passage is...but I also want to go back and see exactly what it says. Does it say what I think I remember it saying?
Do you stop and Google it? Do you look it up on an on-line Bible resource? Are you satisfied with the results? Do you forget about it before you get back to your computer? Do you derive satisfaction from the physical action of turning pages and finding out for yourself? "Nelson's Biblical Cyclopedic Index" is a Bible reference tool. I usually use free, online resources to study the Bible. However, sometimes I don't have the internet available or don't want to do my studying in front of a screen. I also have friends who don't have internet access, so I was interested in this Cyclopedic Index.
The index words (including names, places, concepts, and more) were listed in English alphabetical order. The English word was listed, then the definition or meaning of the word, then the type of reference in the Bible with the verse it's in. (For example, Love, Christian -> Toward others -> Commanded by Christ....John 13:34.) The listings were based on the English word, so, for example, the Hebrew and Greek words usually translated as "dog" were mixed together under the "Dogs" listing.
However, the listings aren't exhaustive. For example, under the "Love" listings, Galatians 5:23 wasn't referred to though the verse contains the word "love." (Note: This verse was listed under "Fruit of the Spirit" under "defined.") Also, the listings for Love (under categories "Christian," "of Christ", and "of God") didn't give a single Old Testament reference, even when referring to the First and Second Commandments.
There were some sporadic word studies throughout the book. In each word study, we're given the English word, a transliteration of the chosen "original language" word it's translated from, how to pronounce that word, the definition of the word, examples of where the word is used in the Bible, and the Strong's number for the word. Which words got word studies seemed almost random. For example, under the "Love" listing, only one (Greek) word for love was studied. The word study sections also didn't tell if the original word was Hebrew, Greek, or what, though it's easy enough to figure out. Also, sometimes all of the possible definitions of the word were listed together rather than separated (by 1., 2., 3., like in dictionaries) by possible meanings based on context. This could potentially be confusing.
The book is a nice, easy-to-hold size. This also means that the font is small, but it's clear and easy-to-see. I do think this book will quickly and effectively help a person create a topical sermon or Bible study. Just keep in mind that this index isn't exhaustive.
I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze book review bloggers program.

Nelson's Biblical Cyclopedic Index (BCI) is an incredible resource. Whether you are preparing for a sermon, a lesson, a bible study, or doing your own personal bible reading and study, this will be an invaluable tool. The BCI originates from The Open Bible, but is designed for use with any version of the Bible. With more than 8,000 subjects, names, places, concepts, events and doctrines, the BCI has more word listings than any other Bible resource available. This index combines the best features of a concordance, topical index, and Bible dictionary in a small paperback book. The listings are arranged alphabetically giving the book, chapter and verse where every reference in this index is found. I am very impressed with Nelson's Biblical Cyclopedic Index, and I am already getting plenty of use out of it. I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their Booksneeze.com book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. Nelson’s Biblical Cyclopedic Index boasts more word listings than any other Bible resource on the market. It’s more detailed than back-of-the-Bible concordances, “with over 8,000 subjects, names, places, things, concepts, events and doctrines of the Bible, plus 300 word studies” (excerpt from the back cover).
What I like about it:
- It’s small and easily totable, measuring at just 5.40 x 6.80 x 1.20.
- It’s paperback, meaning no extra weight and easier to thumb through for quick answers
- Under each subject/word listing is a further breakdown of instances, such as “in the New Testament” or “regarding ____.” It’s not an overwhelming list of verse references you’ll have to sift through to find the verse you’re looking for.
- The word studies offer historical background of the translation of certain words, deepening your understanding of the passages.

"Nelson's Biblical Cyclopedic Index" written by the Thoman Nelson publishing company is a great resource to have on hand. It goes in so much greater detail and specifics than a Bible concordance and is advertised as "more word listings than any other Bible resource available." After reading through it, I believe it! This resource also includes a definition of each word as well. I personally believe it is definitey a great resource for any Bible study.

I really liked Nelson's Biblical Cyclopedic Index it is a great resource for Bible study and would be great for Pastors and lay people alike. I think it would be a great resource for youth. I work with disadvantaged teens that mostly don't have great reading skills this would be a great resource for them. The cost isn't too much that a mentor or teacher wouldnt be able to invest in for a gift for a student. This would make a great graduation gift or Valentines gift for a college student.

Nelson's Biblical Cyclopedic Index
This index is a very intensive and great resource to have as a student, ministry leader, pastor, Bible scholar or Christian! It covers everything in the Bible. It is like taking the back of your Bible index and expanding it in a huge way. It references everything and everyone in the Bible! There are over 8000 listings in alphabetical order with scripture references included. These listings are also broken down into sub-headings making it even more user friendly. Most of them include a brief definition, or if you are looking up a name, you will find the meaning of the name.
It isn’t a heavy book so it’s easy to carry with you. It would be a great resource to use as a teacher or Bible Study leader but also great for personal use. It is easy to use and understand. It is definitely a great resource and one that you should have.

I love books! Some would even consider me to be somewhat of a “bibliophile,” which means “lover of books.” For more than a year now I’ve been writing book reviews and it's been quite an enjoyable experience for me, and my latest read was just as enjoyable, though being a reference book it’s not one that one would simply sit down and read cover to cover, though being a person who used to read encyclopedias I was tempted to do just that…
so here’s the 411 on the book…
“With more listings than any other Bible resource available, the Biblical Cyclopedic Index helps readers quickly pull together a thorough and comprehensive Bible study, lesson, or sermon. Completely unique, The Biblical Cyclopedic Index combines the features of a concordance, a topical Bible, and a Bible dictionary. It is a special kind of subject index that combines the best features of a concordance and a topical index.”
These are the words that the publisher uses to describe the new edition of Nelson’s Biblical Cyclopedic Index, and it’s a description that I fully agree with. Being a pastor I have many reference volumes in my library and some of them I use on a weekly basis (Strong’s, TDNT, etc.) and this volume has found a home among them.
There are several features that I very much like about this little volume, including but not limited to… compact, lightweight, in-depth, and clear legible text. I was also impressed by the occasional word studies that were presented. The information from the word studies is the type which is offered in the book, and it’s a simple format that everyone, from pastor to layman could duplicate on any number of biblical topics.
Here’s an example of the layout of the book…
FAITHFULNESS OF GOD
A. Described as:
Everlasting.................Ps. 119:90
Established...................Ps. 89:2
Unfailing....................Ps. 89:33
Infinite.......................Ps.36:5
Great........................Lam. 3:23
Incomparable...................Ps.89:8
B. Manifested in:
Counsels......................Is. 25:1
Covenant-keeping.............Deut. 7:9
Forgiving sins..............1 John 1:9
Testimonies................Ps. 119:138
Judgments..................Jer. 51:29
Promises...................1 Kin. 8:20
This index is a book that I would now consider a must have for all who are committed readers of the Bible. As a Pastor I wish I would have had one when I first started preaching, for it would have saved me a lot of time. Overall, this is an excellent resource, though I’ll still be holding onto my traditional concordances. It would also make a great gift for someone just getting introduced to reading the Bible.

Nelson's Biblical Cyclopedic Index. I recieved this book today in the mail. I already love it! Its a fantastic resourse for any Pastor, ministry leader, etc... It is extreamly easy to use and covers a wide range of subjects! For example if you want to look up woman in the bible you just turn to the "W" section and and find woman and it lists all the women mentioned in the bible and where to find them! Not only that, but there are also word study's that give you the original greek/hebrew, what the word used translates too and the verses that its used in. They've taken a concordance, a topical Bible and a Bible dictionary and turned it into one book! One awesome book! I will be keeping this book close to my Bible. It is a great resourse that should line every's bookshelf! I will definately be recommending this to all the people I know in the ministry!

The beloved Biblical Cyclopedic Index from The Open Bible is now available as a stand-alone resource, for use with any Bible or translation.
With more listings than any other Bible resource available, Nelson’s Biblical Cyclopedic Index reference tool helps readers quickly pull together a thorough and comprehensive Bible study, lesson, or sermon.
Completely unique, Nelson’s Biblical Cyclopedic Index combines the features of a concordance, a topical Bible, and a Bible dictionary. It is a special kind of subject index that combines the best features of a concordance and a topical index. It’s an incomparable resource for Bible study, with more subjects detailed than any other publication. The Biblical Cyclopedic Index offers more listings than any other similar Bible resource available. With more than 8,000 subjects, names, places, things, concepts, events, and doctrines of the Bible, it is the one resource every church and personal library can’t do without.

That is the description used by Thomas Nelson to describe this resource tool. I do not have too much more that I can add. I will however say a few things. As pastor I find this to be a welcome addition to my home. I checked out the index right away and found that it can be useful in personal studies, devotional writing, my blogging, as well as crafting sermons. I am really looking forward to using it in the near future.

Nelson's BCI bills itself as the "Best Bible Subject Index Ever". I'm not sure I'm qualified to evaluate that claim, but I will say that this little volume came in mighty handy this evening. I needed verses to go with the theme of "changed lives" and while I did not find those exact terms, I did find plenty under "repent" and "repentance" with a pointer to "conversion". A search on "birth" led to "new birth" and "born again" and finally to the perfect verse in Titus.
The BCI includes a collection of word studies from the Old and New Testaments: covenant, forgive, grace, etc. Most headings, unless a proper name or simple concept, contain a list of subheadings which make it useful for developing a Bible study or talk. For example: "Faith" is subdivided into topics such as "Nature of", "Obtained from", "Kinds of", "Described as", and "Examples of" in both the Old and New Testaments. After each reference is a scripture reference that fits the topic.
Want to know all about the Moabites? You'll find "History of", "Characteristics of", "Prophecies concerning their...." Curious about the Jewish calendar? There's a scriptural reference for every month. Want some basics on the life of Paul? You'll find 2 pages of references.
It's not perfect. There's a really cool list of measurements not found under "measurement" but under "Jewish measures". So you'll want to do some browsing, highlighting, and tabbing of interesting pages.
The BCI is easy to use and small enough to slip into a tote bag and bring to Bible study (though I will need my glasses). Highly recommended for personal use or as a gift for a Bible teacher or friend.
Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Nelson's Biblical Cyclopedic Index
Published by Thomas Nelson Publishers
Copyright 1979, 1995, 2010
Nelson's Biblical Cyclopedic Index is a listing of words and definitions found throughout the Bible. The first few pages of the books shows a listing of word studies which can be found throughout. The word studies give depth to the meaning of the word and how it is used and where it can be found in the Bible.
Following is an alphabetical listing of words you might want to reference. Each word you want to look up gives in some cases a short definition, then if necessary breaks down into categories by definition where you can find each word in the Bible. Each reference is in order of appearance in the Bible.
This book is an excellent research tool for your personal Bible study. You might even find yourself thumbing through and actually reading it!
