Thomas Nelson Beauty for Ashes, Hickory Ridge Series #2

She's a beautiful young widow. He's a charming Charleston gentleman with a notorious past. Both need a place to call home.

After years of mourning the death of her young husband and longing for a family of her own, Carrie Daly has promised to wed bookstore owner Nate Chastain. But questions about his true feelings for her cause her to hesitate.

After years of mourning the death of her young husband and longing for a family of her own, Carrie Daly has promised to wed bookstore owner Nate Chastain. But questions about his true feelings for her cause her to hesitate.

Charlestonian Griffin Rutledge, scion of a low country rice planter, former blockade runner, gambler, and horseman, arrives in Hickory Ridge to collect an old debt before heading off to try his luck in Australia. Estranged from his family for years, Griff is a loner and likes it that way. Offered the opportunity to train a magnificent Thoroughbred for the local banker, he settles down . . . temporarily. But a chance meeting with Carrie triggers a chain of events that causes him to question his choices. Maybe God brought him to Hickory Ridge-and to Carrie-for a reason.

If possible, I think Dorothy Love's sophomore novel is better than her first! It's been a long time since I stayed up past midnight to finish a book to it's very last page. :o) Another bonus? That cover...isn't it gorgeous?! The covers for all three books in this series really deserve a hand of applause for their beauty. I could stare at them for the longest time... *sigh* And yet another bonus? It's set in my home state of Tennessee, and I couldn't help but appreciate all the references to cities, towns, and landmarks that I'm familiar with.
I think I related more to the heroine in Beauty for Ashes than I did the heroine in Beyond All Measure (Dorothy's debut novel). I've been in that place before where if something could go wrong, it did go wrong, and like Carrie, I've hoped that I could run away from those problems so someone else could sort them out. Unfortunately, life has other ideas, both in the real and fictitious worlds, and Carrie's world was pretty much turned upside down more than once. It was a cross between heartbreak and frustration as I read about her relationships with Nate and Mary, but those feeling were soon replaced with admiration because of her strength of character. No matter what, she wasn't going to quit. No matter what, her irritation at the lot she'd been given in life was not going to overwhelm her. She was going to make it through this storm God had sent her through (first the loss of a husband, then being the third wheel in her brother's new marriage), and come out stronger on the other side.
Griff's character was a good addition to the story, but I didn't connect with him as much as I would've liked. It always seemed like he was hiding something, even until the very end. Most likely, it was the drifter in him that made me wary. However, I did enjoy the portions where he worked as a horse trainer, and the references to the newly-created Kentucky Derby.
When I connect with books on a personal level, it's always easy to recommend them. It's extra-easy in this case because this book is a winner. :o) I can't wait to journey back to Hickory Ridge one final time when Dorothy's final book in this series, Every Perfect Gift, releases later this year.

Carrie Daly and her brother Henry lost their parents at young age. Bonding together, family was the tie that brought them strength.. Carrie had been living with Henry after loosing her husband to the Civil war years ago. When Henry weds Mary, accompanied by her two young sons, everything is thrown into turmoil. Carrie soon finds herself leaving the family home, heart broken and discouraged.
Dorothy has woven a tale of disappointments, struggles and testing of the human spirit. Life gets more complicated each day as Carrie seeks for answers but the path is not always clear. The story reads smoothly, the characters are well developed, vivid and memorable. A wonderful story the will bestow hope to the wounded heart.

Beauty for Ashes was a charming historical. It wasn't as romantic as I would have liked, but I enjoyed the mystery regarding Griff's past and the issue of Carrie feeling stuck taking care of people she never asked to be responsible for. She was a great heroine and I could see how Griff fell in love with her.
I love stories where the adventurous hero is tamed into desiring a domestic life because of the sweetness of a good woman. Carrie was definitely that. Griff was a great hero, too. He probably helped her keep her sanity after all of the mini-messes that needed fixing. I wish Carrie and Griff had shared a bit more affection, though. Carrie sure did get a lot of hard knocks from those kids she ended up responsible for during Mary's confinement. She was a strong and good-hearted lady. All in all it was a good story.

I enjoyed this second book by Dorthy Love. Loved that some of the Characters from the first book Beyond All Measure, made a return visit!
This books has many chuckles, and some ohhhhhs, and some very sad happenings. We are focusing at a time just after the Civil War and there is a Depression happening. Carrie Daly is now required to welcome a new woman into her home she shares with her brother Henry. His new bride, Mary, comes with two...not adorable sons.
Carrie has been keeping company with Nate for quite awhile, and everyone expects them to marry. She is rescued from an uncertain death by Griff Rutledge, he is going to be in town for awhile training a horse. Now we will wonder for awhile who will win her hand or neither?
Love that the Lord seems to have a hand in the lives of these Characters, and as in real life not always as we wish.
I recommend this for a fast enjoyable read!

Beauty For Ashes, the second installment in the Hickory Ridge series, is a charming novel for the southern heart! Dorothy Love's writing is pure southern, through and through.
I loved the characters in this novel. Dorothy Love has such a talent in creating characters who are likable, yet very flawed. In this novel, no one is considered flawless. It's amazing how she exposes vulnerabilities inside characters that adds another dimension to them, yet at the same time it never once justifies their flaws. Pure genius, if you ask me.
Something I really appreciate in this novel is how the main female character has it out with God. She is honest with Him when it comes to her hurts, her doubts, her pain, and her questions. Too many Christian novels surround us with fluffy conversations with God. Not this one!
The elements in this novel brought be back to my own ashes and reminded me of the beauty God has made from them. Any novel that causes us to reflect on our own life, is probably doing exactly what the author set out to do--touch the reader.
One of the things I sincerely appreciate is Griff Rutledge. As a Charleston native, Dorothy Love's character is a pure and true Charleston gentlemen (yes, to us there is Charleston, then the rest of the world). I love how she even used a prominent Charleston last name--and many more were mentioned in the novel. Her knowledge of the Charleston area astounded and impressed me immensely. For someone who doesn't live in the area, but visited it many times, she has done an awesome job in absorbing and understanding our historical culture.
I love how she has skillfully meshed together Tennessee and Charleston in this novel. Bravo!
I highly recommend Beauty For Ashes to anyone who loves southern, historical, and romance!

Carrie Daly is alone after the deaths of her parents, grandmother, and husband. When her brother marries and has an instant family, she feels even more alone than before. Not wanting to miss out on what may be her last chance at happiness she begins to feel pressure to marry her friend Nate Chastain. When Griff Rutledge, a horse trainer, arrives in town, Carrie feels a strong attraction to him—despite the misgivings of the rest of the townspeople. She must decide if she will make a practical choice or follow her heart.
After reading Beyond All Measure last year, I knew that I had found a real treasure in Dorothy Love. It was great to return to the quaint town of Hickory Ridge, Tennessee in Beauty for Ashes.
I felt so sorry for Carrie. In the absence of family, she has made great friends in the dying town of Hickory Ridge. However, some friends have moved away and then some turn away from her when she needs them most. I was so frustrated with some of the townspeople! I suppose that's how life in a small town is (or used to be, anyway). Griff, on the other hand, was intriguing. It was obvious that he had secrets about his past, and I was curious to figure out what they were. The best part about the main characters—Carrie, Griff, and even Mary—was that there was such growth and change and even redemption in each of them. While everything didn't turn out perfectly in the end, it was good to see that trials weren't wasted on them!
While Beauty for Ashes certainly stands alone, it could be helpful to read the series in order as there are a number of references to people and events that took place in the first book. At first, it was a little hard for me to remember what happened in the last book, but I was able to put the pieces together quickly. Overall, I truly enjoyed this book and look forward to seeing what will happen next in Hickory Ridge! [4 stars]

Beauty for Ashes by Dorothy Love is the second book in the Hickory Ridge Romance series and the first book that I have read by Dorothy Love, although, it will not be the last. As I am already looking forward to the next book in this series, as well as, others from this author.
At first I was a little lost in the story because I hadn't read the first book in the series--Beyond All Measure--but I soon became familiar enough with the characters, and became engrossed in the story.
It had been Carrie and her brother, Henry, since their parents deaths. After her husband's death, Carrie had lived with her brother and helped with taking care of their farm. Things are changing though and Henry has married Mary, a women who can be mean-spirited and selfish, and she also has two young, undisciplined boys.
Carrie decides to move into town to make a new life for herself because she and Mary can't seem to get along. Carrie likes living in town, and the job that she has been given by Nate, the book-seller and the man she is courting. When she meets Griff Rutledge, after he saves her from being trampled by a runaway horse, she finds herself thinking about him, and enjoying the times they meet on the street.
Griff Rutledge is from North Carolina, and is in Hickory Ridge on personal business. He is also a horse trainer. After he saves Carrie from being trampled by Majestic, a spirited young Thoroughbred, he is asked by the towns banker to train Majestic, for the upcoming Race Week. Griff agrees, but he doesn't plan on staying in Hickory Ridge for long, as he has a wanderlust and wants to visit Australia, and maybe buy a horse farm there. Although Carrie has had warnings from her friends about spending time with Griff, she enjoys his company, and continues to see him.
When Mary has been put on bed rest, Carrie must return to the farm in order to help run the farm and to care for Mary and her boys while Henry is away working in Chicago for the railroad. It is hard for Carrie to return, but she does. During the time of Mary's confinement, Carrie begins to see Mary differently, and grows to love her boys, as well.
The story shows how people can grow and change when God is placed first in their lives. I found that some of the lessons Carrie was learning are some of the same that God is teaching me. Touching my heart even more.
I enjoyed Beauty of Ashes very much, and give it 5 out of 5 stars.

Beauty For Ashes was a beautifully and well crafted story. Not being accustomed to reading books during the post Civil War era, I was intrigued from the onset. Dorothy painted a very descriptive picture of Hickory Ridge, you could easily picture the town, old inn, and farms in this book. The author did a wonderful job in describing the scenarios and emotions in each passing scene.
The author's intimate portrayal of the characters made them real. You journeyed with Carrie and Griff as they fought to live under the shadow of their past and start afresh in the present. This story really captured the heart of man without God.
The plot was an emotional roller coaster. Many times you rejoiced with the characters and other times you understood their anger and sadness. The story line was seasoned with the right amount of romance, suspense, emotion, and humor to keep you guessing while making it an all together worthwhile story.
Despite its well-written plot and clean romance, there was one part I could have done without. Carrie's attraction to Griff was sometimes a little too much. There were times when the world could be going upside down, but with one glance at Griff she would just melt and everything was fine. However, this observation is not enough to make the reading any less enjoyable. This story was great. I would give a 4.5 out of 5.

BEAUTY FOR ASHES by Dorothy Love is a delightful novel, the first one I've read in at least 2 years. I was ready for some lighter, relaxing reading and was rewarded with this one. I will give it a 9 on a 10 scale.
This story based on post-Civil War times in Tennessee has Carrie as its main character. She is a young lady who has passed through difficult times and continues to do so throughout the book. She wonders what the Lord's purpose is in all of this for her. I love this line which describes how she felt at one point: "She tried to see the purpose in every bad thing that had happened in her life, but her eyes had grown weary with looking." In a series of disappointing and even strange (to not say mysterious) events, she comes to terms with herself, with others and, most importantly, with her Lord.
Although there is nothing unusual or outstanding and it has no "wow!" factor (which, by the way, is why I didn't give it a 10), Beauty For Ashes is an interesting story and the author manages to hold the reader's attention. At least she did mine and I'm pretty picky when it comes to authors holding my attention! I've been known to not even finish a book because the author didn't hold my attention...ok, enough of that. Well, in spite of my life being more-than-normal-busy during the past 3 weeks, I found...no, I MADE time!...to read this book. I'm looking forward to passing it on as a gift to someone else.
To the publisher/printer I would like to make the suggestion that it be proofread again so as to remove the typos before a second printing is done. There were several throughout the book.

Carrie Daly does not like to hear the statement " Sorry you lost your husband." She will let you know real quick that she did not loose her husband he was killed during the Civil War. She has grieved his death for many years and honored him by not remarrying in hopes of keeping his memory alive.
Carrie's friend Ada Wentworth helped Carrie realize that she wanted to have a family of her own especially children.
She has had a friendship with Nate Chastain, the town's bookstore owner but friendship is as far as her feelings for him have gone.
Then Griff Rutledge, a known gambler, comes to Hickory Ridge and saves her from being trampled by a horse drawn buggy. Every time she turns around he is there rescuing her from one thing or another. She is drawn to him and he to her. Surprisingly they do seem to have some things in common. Carrie's friends try to discourage her from associating with him fearing her reputation will be ruined. Griff has plans to start a ranch in Australia. He is not interested in being tied down by land or a woman. He prays and reads his bible but is still confused as to the direction of his life. Is he avoiding praying for God's will?
Nothing seems to be going Carrie's way since her brother got married and turned her life upside down. It seemed like every obstacle imaginable is getting in the way of the life she so wanted for herself. She reads her bible and prays everyday yet she still feels discouraged. Is she also avoiding praying for God's will?
This story show just how difficult things were back them for man to provide for his family. It was much worse for a woman trying to run a fame and provide for a family.
I highly recomment this book!
I rate this book a 5 out of 5.

I found this novel to be a very tender-hearted and realistic one. Although I had actually met the characters in the first novel of the series, not having done so would not spoil the story. The story is told with rich word imagery, bringing the country side and small town folk to life, from Carrie trying to think of anything but the wedding at the beginning of Beauty for Ashes, to the last word.
I must admit I was angry at Mary, a secondary character for her whiney and childish behavour, but I guess some people just never grow up, and I think it might have changed after she had to take care of her children on her own. Carrie is a strong farm woman, intent on being in control of her own life. Griff comes from the city of Charleston, of a family rich in resources, but with a questionable past. Although the characters deal with losses, this is not a story of discouragement, but rather encouragement. These people have realistical problems of anger, disallusions, gossiping, and the other things that torment the rest of us. Throughout all of the trials, though, the Love of God and friends, shines through.
I would recommend this Hickory Ridge Romance to anyone who enjoys a good romance novel.

Carrie Daly is a war widow longing for a family and home to call her own. When her brother marries and tensions rise in the house, she opts to relocate and despite the interest of Nate she cannot get herself to commit and set a date for a wedding.
Griff Rutledge is quite removed from the Charleston society he grew up in, but hasn't spoken with his family in years. He feels that he will never settle down and is in fact ready to head Down Under when an interesting prospect turns up to train a race horse, which keeps him in Hickory Ridge longer than anticipated.
Against the advice of most of the town Carrie finds herself falling for the southern gentlemen, who seems to save the day for Carrie more than once. Only as the town overcomes their prejudice and finally sees the kindness and generosity in Griff will they be able to see the beauty for ashes.
I started Beauty for Ashes yesterday and finished it today. Dorothy Love does a wonderful job pulling you into the plot and keeping your interest from the start. Although the romance between Carri and Griff is a major part of the story, Ms. Love does a nice job of focusing on personal faith and growth in the characters. I was able to relate to the main character and the joys and sorrows she experienced throughout the book.

I enjoyed Dorothy's first book in her Hickory Ridge series, Beyond All Measure, so I was glad for the opportunity to review Beauty for Ashes and continue reading about the widow Carrie Daly.
Poor thing.
Although Carrie is not the main character in book one, you do find out that she's finally decided to retire her widow's weeds and be open to finding love again. Carrie is now comfortably courting Nate, the town's bookstore owner, who is patiently biding his time for Carrie to announce a wedding date.
Enter the competition, Griff. Surprisingly, I didn't really like him. He reminded me of Clark Gable's Rhett Butler (a blockade runner, perceived as ungentlemanly, etc.), although perhaps Griff was not quite as greasy as Gable. I certainly found it unacceptable that he told Carrie, in reference to her nephews, `every man ought to know how to swear, ride a horse, play poker, and hold his liquor.' Huh? Yeah, I was not impressed. Griff may have been joking, but it certainly fit his `Rhett Butler' character and there was no evidence of spiritual change as the book continued.
Throw in a nasty sister-in-law, disrespectful, hooligan nephews, a shocking elopement, and more, you couldn't help but feel sorry for Carrie and wish that she could have a spot of sunshine in her life.
Carrie was easy to like and empathize with, but I liked the overall storyline of Beyond All Measure better.

My Thoughts
This book is the second in the series but you don't necessarily need to read them in order. I didn't and had no problems with it.
The main character, Carrie Daly, was very easy to relate to and I found myself mad, happy, and sad when she was. I loved how Carrie did what needed to be down with little thought to herself. Not that she was always happy with what was required of her but she did it in spite of her feelings, which I admire.
The romance between Carrie and Griff was nice but the author did a great job of not making it the overwhelming focus of the story. Instead she split the plot between their romance and each of the character's personal and spiritual growth. All in all I thoroughly enjoyed this story and look forward to reading more from Dorothy Love.

I was super excited to be able to review this novel; it follows the first installment in Love’s Hickory Ridge series, Beyond All Measure. I always love it when an author chooses to follow a set of characters because I feel like the original story doesn’t just end on the last page. Beauty For Ashes was no exception, it followed the stories of some of the characters we previously met in Hickory Ridge as well as introducing us to some newcomers.
I enjoyed reading this book so much I read it in less than five days, it would have taken less time but we had a family trip over the weekend! The way Dorothy Love writes makes it really easy for a reader to find themselves in the midst of the story, right there in Hickory Ridge. I fell in love with the story of Carrie and Griff, I can’t wait to see where life leads them in Love’s next novel. There’s also an element of mystery in this book, we never learn the full story of Rosaleen and are left guessing how her story might develop and what twists and turns her path might take. According to a note at the end of this novel, the next installment in the Hickory Ridge series is due out next year….it’s going to be a long wait for those of us so captivated by the tales of fictional small town in Tennessee.

Book Description:
She’s a beautiful young widow. He’s a Southern gentleman with a thirst for adventure. Both need a place to call home.
After losing her husband in the Civil War, Carrie Daly is scared she will never have the family she longs for. Eligible bachelors are scarce in Hickory Ridge, Tennessee, but Carrie Daly has found love. Not the weak-in-the-knees kind, but something practical. Still, she isn't quite ready to set a wedding date with Nate Chastain.
Griff Rutledge is a former member of Charleston society, but has been estranged from his family for years. He’s determined to remain unattached, never settling in one place for too long. But when asked to train a Thoroughbred for an upcoming race in Hickory Ridge, he decides to stay awhile.
Despite objections from the townsfolk, and her fear that true happiness has eluded her, Carrie is drawn to Griff's kindness and charm. It will take a leap of faith for them to open their hearts and claim God's promise to trade beauty for ashes.
I had a hard time getting into this book. The characters were distant and a lot of time flew by in between scenes so I felt like I missed things in their lives that would have helped connect me with the characters.
I did enjoy the ending and loved reading about how God brings their stories together, heals their hearts and helps them find true joy again.
There are happy and sad moments in the book that help move the story along but I would have appreciated more emotion from the characters. They seemed to move quickly from one event to another.
Beauty for Ashes is a story that will capture your heart as you reach the ending.

History, romance, and faith are rolled up into this romance set in post Civil War Tennessee. Carrie is a widow who lives with her brother. When her brother marries a disagreeable woman, she moves from the farm to town to make it on her own. In the midst of all of this, she is undecided on the obvious marriage choice or the stranger who comes to town. This handsome stranger saves her from a runaway buggy, and the romance sprouts. Griff, the stranger, doesn't plan on staying, but between a horse race and his growing interest in Carrie, his plans are delayed.
This book is the second in a series, but as with many books of this genre, it stands on its own. Ms. Love weaves an interesting tale that follows the familiar romance format, and was a joy to read. I read it quite quickly.
Ms. Love creates characters that you can like and dislike. Carrie's sister in law was especially disagreeable. Some characters were fairly typical, but have their purpose in the scope of the story/series.
Overall, I enjoyed this book, and highly recommend it for all of you romance addicts or newbies out there....:)

BeautyFor Ashes tells the story of Carrie Daly and Griff Rutledge.
Carrie is a Civil War widow who must find her own way in the world after her brother Henry gets married. When she finds she cannot remain at home with her brother’s new family, she must create a new life for herself in Hickory Ridge. Griff also has demons from his past that he must deal with. As both Carrie and Griff seek to find their place in the world, they are drawn closer to God as well as each other.
Beauty For Ashes is the first novel of Dorothy Love that I have read. It was an enjoyable and easy read. I will look for more of her books in the future!

This is a Christian romance novel that has absolutely no adult content. I’m just absolutely thrilled about this.. This is great for those wanting to read about romance with Christianity tossed in. This is one of those novels you just find impossible to put down. It is really a very good read.
The story is about Carrie Daly who is living with her brother and he gets married to a woman with 2 sons. Your heart goes out to Carrie when you find out what went on in the house after her brother married Mary and her and the 2 boys move in.
Carrie is seeing Nate Chastain, and the whole town thinks they are perfect together. Carrie wants to be sure that Nate is the one God wants for her before setting the date.
When she meets Griff Rutledge, she starts having feelings she thought died with her first husband. So she is now more confused than ever.
The ending is very heart warming .
