Thomas Nelson Life Everlasting, Alexi Lindale Series #2

Darkness loomed, but the music--and the flickering light--persisted. Then grew stronger. The music stopped, the room emptied, and Baxter Richardson opened his eyes for the first time in months. He should have died from his involuntary plunge off a cliff. But he's alive, and mortal danger remains. Familiar enemies stalk him. New ones hover close at hand.

Meanwhile, haunted by accusing apparitions and the tightening dragnet of criminal investigation, Baxter's wife, Rena, is losing her patience. And quite possibly her mind.

Whitlow's novel is the sequel to Life Support. If you have not read that one (which I had not) you will be confused with this one. Unfortunately, there is no review of the first novel nor is sufficient information placed within the early pages of this book to allow you to “catch up” or remember the first book.
Baxter signed over power of attorney to his father at age eighteen (why, we don't know). Now, years later, it appears Baxter tried to kill his wife, Rena, or was she really the one who tried to kill him? He had fallen off a cliff and was in a coma and at least partially paralyzed. Apparently in the prior novel Rena tried to get Baxter's life support removed, claiming it was what he would have wanted.
Baxter's father is methodically taking his son's money, and interest in several companies, Rena claimed. Baxter's brother Jeffrey has given Rena the money to hire an attorney, Alex Lindale. Alex believes Rena's story.
A subplot in the book is her getting to know church musician Ted Morgan. Ted believes music has a healing ability. He is a concert quality pianist but because of illness at a crucial time, did not pursue that career.
Rena is caught in a web of lies and Alex refuses to continue representing her. But then Alex does continue to be involved in her defense.
The novel continues on in this way.
I was not very impressed with this novel. If I had not received as part of a blogging program, I doubt I would have finished it. The writing is very uneven. At times the action is compelling yet most of the novel plods along, frequently containing scenes and descriptions that seem to have been included only to make the novel longer.
The ending of the novel is disappointing. A miracle happens that just doesn't seem to fit the flow of the rest of the story.
I received an egalley of this book for the purpose of this review.

Life Everlasting by Robert Whitlow

Date:September 13, 2011
Life Everlasting by Robert Whitlow is an intriguing legal thriller. The plot was intricate and the characters were well-developed. A number of difficult topics were addressed throughout.
When I chose this book, I was unaware that this was a sequel. While most books in a series can somewhat stand on their own, this one definitely does not. It felt like Life Everlasting picked up right where Life Support (which I had not read) left off - more like one story in two books rather than two separate books. The book was pretty difficult to get into and I had a hard time connecting with the characters. I felt like most of my complaints were due to the fact that I hadn't read the first one. I'll give Robert Whitlow a second chance (and choose the first book this time!).
I received a free copy of this book from Thomas Nelson / Booksneeze in exchange for my fair and honest review.

Life Everlasting by Robert Whitlow
I just finished the book Life Everlasting , which is the second book in Santee Series. I haven't read the first book in this series, Life Support, but it wasn't hard to jump in and read the second. I do feel like I am missing the back ground of some of the characters without reading the first though...
Book Description
Though Alexia's client's life no longer hangs in the balance, eternal questions linger.
Caught in the middle of it all is Alexia Lindale, a lawyer forced to find her way through deceptive alliances, uncertain romances, and courtroom intrigue. It's a struggle of life, death . . . and life everlasting.
The story starts with Baxter Richardson in a coma from an involuntary fall off a cliff. His wife wants him dead to protect her secrets. His brother wants him dead so he can have more control of the family business. This is a family filled with greed!
Rene, Baxter's wife seems to be losing her mind. Baxter's brother is playing a game with her and her lawyer, Alexia Lindale... but neither one know it.
Then you have Alexia's friend, Ted Morgan, who is a classically trained pianist. Ted is a Music Minister, but God has given him a gift. God uses Ted and his gift of playing the piano to slowly bring Baxter back from his coma.
As Baxter grows stronger, the more endangered he becomes, but there is not just danger for him...
I did enjoy this book. Although, I do wish I could have read Life Support first. This book is well written and flows nicely... I honestly couldn't put it down. This story is filled with God's power and how God can use anything, like a piano, or anyone, even a family filled with greed, to glorify His name... and mold people into what He has called them to be.

Life Everlasting by Robert Whitlow
Can God heal in ways that we have never experienced or imagined? Is there power to heal in God’s Word and in music? How can a person know whether someone is telling the truth? These are questions I asked as I read this book.
There are so many angles of interest in this book: ethical dilemmas surrounding a comatose patient, legal maneuverings to conceal or reveal truth, proper responses to the use or withdrawal of talents, sharing of the gospel of Christ, and even a little romance.
Lawyer Alexis Lindale must sort through the confusion to be on truth’s side as she deals with manipulative, dangerous, comatose, and damaged people. The priority has to be “life everlasting.”
When I received this book to review, I did not know it was Book 2 in a series. As I read, I knew I was missing some of the pieces to the puzzle. I finished reading it, read Book 1 (Life Support), and then read Life Everlasting again. I enjoyed the book both times I read it. The characters are interesting and spontaneous, and there is surprise and suspense throughout. I chose to read this book because of my nursing background and interest in the plight of the comatose patient. I was intrigued and entertained by this book. I recommend it highly.
I received a free copy of Life Everlasting from Thomas Nelson Publishers in exchange for this review.

As Baxter lies fighting for his life, a young music minister brings music to his room.

Life Everlasting, by Robert Whitlow, is the continuation of Life Support. It finishes the story of Baxter and Rena Richardson as well as Alexia “Alex” Lindale and Ted Morgan in a dramatic tale with several twists and turns throughout.
Rena’s legal issues persist as she tries to maintain her innocence regarding not only her husband’s attempted murder, but also the murder of a policeman. While those who have read the first book know that Rena is guilty, her attorney, Alex, does not. Alex attempts to fight Rena’s many legal battles, unaware that Rena is falling farther and farther into a state of insanity. Meanwhile, Alex and Ted are falling farther and farther in love.
I enjoyed reading this book, as I anticipated the ending to the story and was not disappointed. I especially enjoyed exploring the issue of using music therapy to assist those in critical situations. However, I did think that the ending seemed very rushed. After two books filled with great detail, everything fell into place at the end with no real explanation of some issues. I found myself wondering how some of the issues worked out or suddenly happened.
Overall, this was a marvelous book. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys mystery and suspense.

I just finished reading "Life Everlasting," by Robert Whitlow, which is the sequel to "Life Support." Actually, to call this a sequel is a bit of an understatement. It’s more like “Volume Two.” Set in Santee, South Carolina, both books feature Alexia “Alex” Lindale, an up-and-coming divorce lawyer who finds her life, and her legal practice, dominated by her overbearing client, Rena Richardson.
We know, but Alex doesn’t, that Rena is slowly but surely going insane, and that she is guilty of trying to kill her husband, Baxter, by throwing him off a cliff. Throughout the first book, Baxter was lying in a coma, while Rena struggled to have life support removed before he might wake up and identify her as the attempted murderer she is. Working against her, unknowingly, was Ted Morgan, who is using music therapy to channel God’s healing power into Baxter’s paralyzed body. Ted, by the way, and Alex, are rapidly falling in love.
In "Life Everlasting," Rena’s plans continue to unravel as Baxter begins to awaken. Alex tries to sort out her faith and her feelings for Ted. The police are closing in on the truth. And, a crime syndicate has its own reasons for wanting to cover up what really happened on the cliff.
I’ve got to say, while I enjoyed "Life Support," I found "Life Everlasting" to be even more engaging. The characters have become far more complex and three-dimensional. The plot twists are more surprising, and the excitement continues to build throughout the story. The only disappointment is that the ending seems a bit contrived, as all the loose ends come together too quickly.
Even though I'm a pastor, I’ve not been much of a fan of Christian fiction, because too many authors put the religious content first and the story second. Whitlow successfully weaves faith into this legal thriller so that it become an integral part of the story, rather than an obligatory add on.
I recommend you read both books, in order. I’m glad I did.
The publisher, Thomas Nelson, provided me with a complimentary copy of this book.

If this synopsis is the type that catches your attentions, then you will enjoy Life Everlasting, by Robert Whitlow, Thomas Nelson Publishing. It is the second book in what I can only perceive is a two book series, as I cannot find a third book in the series as of yet. The main character, a attorney in South Carolina, is faced with defending a woman whom she is beginning to doubt. At the same time, the man whom she is developing a romantic interest in, a music pastor, is ministering to her comatose husband, who she says tried to murder her. As he begins to awaken, elements of truth begin to emerge, but who is telling the truth? I thoroughly enjoyed the book, once I got a few chapters into it, and it only took that long because I had not read the first book. Mr Whitlow, a practicing attorney, fills his book with enough legal drama to make the plot exciting, characters who have enough dimension to make them likable, but not plastic, and spiritual truth without dipping into preachiness. He finds balance, which is not an easy thing to do. I will definitely pick up more titles by this author.
I received this book free from Booksneeze in exchange for this review, but the opinions expressed are my own.

LIFE EVERLASTING is the sequel to LIFE SUPPORT which gives, I suspect, some background to what you will read. I have not read the first book yet, but after having read LIFE EVERLASTING, I intend to do so as soon as possible.
Imaging a female Matlock dealing with a client who may or may not be hiding a great deal about their motives. Add a few shady characters who have an agenda of their own and would like to bend the facts and circumstances to gain materially.
Running through the story is a romantic undertone that will appeal to men and women alike. The local music minister believes in God's power to heal and he has some novel notions on the subject. His skill comes into play in the resolution of the mystery and his ideas prove valid when God answers his prayers.
The writing is enhanced by the author's knowledgeable presentation of information relating to music, law and the power of the Holy Spirit. This is not a book where God is an add-on. His presence is evident throughout.
Robert Whitlow leaves the door open to another sequel. I want to read that one, too.
