In answer to any naysayer, I can't believe how Christians can suspend belief when discussing God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, heaven, the afterlife, etc. "If it's not Bible-based..." I've never run into any passages about Christ blowing His nose, eating left-handed, or snoring. So I'm not to believe that He may have done these things? I am also in the dark about His childhood. So He didn't have one? This is a beautiful story from a 3-4 year old who hadn't been jaded by adults arguing about what is possible and what isn't possible. We don't know exactly what heaven will be like for each of us, but I DO KNOW that my Father can make heaven a special place for each & every one of us, because I'm not really into gold, harps, or mansions. I'll be tickled pink if I get a cabin with all the animals God sees fit to have me care for. Now THAT is Heaven!! If you can keep your mind open, this is one of the blessings you'll receive this year---He sends them to us in different packages, doesn't He?

I also love the honesty with which he describes his pain and depression and the inevitable questions that we must face when we have close encounters with the Almighty. The God we meet is often not the one we expected, and while we can't understand why God does what He does. I loved it from the very first page. It has a ring of truth. This book will wake up the Dead. I know because I've left it to where anybody could read it and for those that did, their reading experience was similar. Utterly readable & truly inspiring. Two thumbs up!!! This is one that you'll be referencing & re-reading for a long time to come.
In this new one he explores how unforgiveness is actually a learned behavior. If you don't forgive, then that issue can eat you inside like a cancer. He encourages to let it go, forgive, let your life go on.... it's better for yourself if you forgive so you can continue your life, and also so that you can be forgiven, too.
This book is easy to read, and I really recommend this book to those of us that are women, and have women in our lives. Giving support to others through what you can read in this book could possibly give others a greater perspective.
This book is amazing, it will change your heart your soul completely! Everything was as described in the add and I received it when I expected. A good experience overall.

I am surprised by how many Christians are easily deceived. The Church needs to stop putting personal experiences above God's Word! This book is unbiblical. period.
This book adds to the Bible: Colton explains that "Everyone kind of looks like angels in heaven," sporting wings (the size of which are dependent on the individual's size) and a halo. Since the resurrection of believers' transformed physical bodies has yet to take place, their form now in Heaven must lack physical attributes. Hence the need for wings of whatever size makes no sense. Moreover, other than the descriptive visions of the heavenly creatures known as cherubim and seraphim and the decorative designs in the Temple and upon the Mercy Seat, angels that appear to humanity are never described as having wings.
If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book! Rev 22:18

I enjoyed reading Heaven is For Real, but I wasn't impressed with the DVD Conversation Kit. I think the book alone will initiate conversation, and the DVD is a very simple interview of the family.
If you have questions about the book, go straight to Scripture for answers. There is no need to purchase the DVD kit.

This book is about a little boy who gets to experience what Heaven is like when he is 4 years old due to an unfortunate circumstance but comes back to tell us what he saw. This particular version was written much later than the first one as a guide for churches wishing to explore scripture and line it up with what they hear about in the little boy's account. It has a DVD that goes along with each chapter and a discussion guide as well.
I was excited to get this book for review. I had heard people talking about how great it was and how much they enjoyed it. What I got from it was far from enjoyment. For Several reasons.
First, the conversation kit was difficult to use. I was confused on where to read this and when to discuss that. It wasn't formatted very well. Then, the DVD felt forced. It's not very informative and doesn't keep my attention. If you have people who are not intrigued by 60 minutes, then they definitely will not like this.
Also, I was concerned about the input that the father put in. It felt as if he had to "explain" everything for his son. It seemed as if the father interpreted what the son had experienced and told him that was what he really saw. For example, the father brought up that the son had seen the Armageddon. What 4 year old knows what the "Armageddon" is if they had seen it? As the DVD progressed, the more I was disappointed in the influence the father had in influencing his son's experience.
I wouldn't do this as a group study. It's not as informative as it's marketed to be.

Heaven is for Real dvd Based conversation kit.
After reading Heaven is for Real you can help but be very obsessive about heaven and how real it is. My junior high sunday school class have read the book and discussed it in great detail so when the dvd based conversation kit became available I jumped on it.
Pro's---You can't watch the Burpo family and not believe them. It erases all doubt. This is just a normal midwestern family who love Jesus and are very brave in telling their story. No doubt this has effected their lives.
Con's---The conversation kit is way too complicted. The dvd is conversation starter enough. If you followed the plan in the book it would just be boring and repeat itself. I think the whole thing just needs simplied and it would be so much easier on the leader of the class.
My junior high boys had mixed reviews but all in all kept their attention. That is quite a feat for 14 year old boys!

When I received Todd Burpo's Heaven is for Real, Conversation Kit for review, I was very much looking forward to experiencing Burpo's son, Colton's story in a group study dynamic. I decided to preview the study first before deciding which of my small groups would be the best fit.
Well, as it turned out, I probably won't actually do the study with any group. Why? Several reasons.
First off, you must be fully committed to believing Colton's story of visiting heaven to enjoy this study. I certainly acknowledge that Colton's interpretation of what happened may be accurate, but in my mind, it is equally possible that what he experienced was not truly heaven. Regardless of whether he was in true heaven or not, Colton's story is capable of inspiring great change in our lives; I would have loved a study that capitalized on what Colton's experience inspires us toward. Instead, I felt as if I were watching Burpo (the father) insist on the story's truth, with discussion questions being gratuitously added.
On the subject of the discussion questions, there is an awkward variability in target audience. Some questions seem geared toward a family talking with children, while others are much more in depth and appropriate for an adult study. This creates the need for additional prep time on the part of a group leader, who would need to preselect and filter questions for a given group.
Finally, while I generally enjoy studies with a DVD component (see Stuck and Journey to Christmas), the DVD sessions of Heaven is for Real felt very forced, as if Burpo was really stretching to create a multimedia package. Basically, the DVD sessions are short monologues by Burpo, followed by snipets of a reporter interviewing Burpo and his wife and son, Colton. Not only was that format not terribly engaging, Burpo actually seemed to be answering for Colton in a number of instances, which began to border on annoying, and even suspicious.
I received this kit free from Thomas Nelson Publisher for the purpose of providing my honest opinion. I was not required to give a positive review.

Does it seem that there is a lot of curiousity about heaven to you lately? It does to me. There are lots of books coming out - lots of people claiming to have taken a trip to heaven and are back here to tell us about it. I recently read "Heaven is For Real" about a little boy named Colton who claims to have seen heaven and met Jesus during an emergency surgery. I read the book and was intrigued. The book itself was captivating. It presented a perspective from a child's view.
After I read the book, I became curious about the dvd driven small group study by the same author (Colton's dad, Todd Burpo) and book name. I was fortunate enough to get a copy for free from booksneeze.com to view and review.
I am sad to say, I was not as impressed by the study. First, I wouldn't even call it a study really. The dvd seemed a bit disjointed from the accompanying guide. The dvd was more of an interview with Todd, Colton and Sonya (Colton's mom) and a woman reporter who had originally talked to Colton and his family when this story first broke.
The dvd was divided out into five segments. Each one was interesting, but really, more of an overview of what was in the book. My real disappointment came when I got to session 5 "Who Goes to Heaven?". I was really looking forward to a good solid, compelling Gospel presentation. That never came. It was very fluffy, and it never really addressed the Gospel of Jesus Christ (repent, turn from your sin and to Christ and receive Him as your Lord and your Savior). This was a great build up and opportunity to share the Gospel that I felt went flat.
The conversation guide I found to be very surface and elementary. There was great potential to dig deeper in some areas, but that too was an opportunity lost. The questions did not hold my interest or get me thinking further. Scripture references were provided, but seemed to be added in to the writing, instead of the writing around the Scriptures.
Overall, I wouldn't consider it a flop, but I would not recommend it for a small group study. Not meaty enough. Not solid enough. But, if you want to introduce and encourage conversation about heaven with your family and children, this is a way that you could do that. But I recommend this only for a spiritually solid Christian parent so gray areas can be identified and discussed more in depth. I do recommend that you read the book prior to buying this dvd and guide. It provides more detail and a better picture of what this family experienced.
** Thank you to Thomas Nelson Publishing - They provided me with a complimentary copy of this dvd and discussion guide through BookSneeze in exchange for an unbiased, honest review. **

Based on the best-selling book Heaven is for Real, this conversation kit is a tool for churches, small groups, and families to dig deeper into the Word of God and what it says about God and heaven. The kit includes the DVD curriculum and a Conversation Guide. The guide easily walks the facilitator through the curriculum and helps the small group meeting run smoothly.
First, I read the actual book Heaven is for Real about Colton Burpo's unexpected trip to heaven during an emergency appendectomy. Colton wants everyone to know "heaven is for real and you're going to like it!" His story resonated with me - not only my questions about heaven - but who I will see again.
The DVD curriculum shares Natalie Tysdal's interviews with Todd, Sonja, and Colton as they answer some of the most frequently asked questions about heaven. While many of the questions and answers are in the book, this gives you a chance to hear in their own words their experiences. I love it when Colton plainly states that he can't remember all the details since it was so long ago. This family has opened their hearts, both in the book and DVD, to share God's healing to those around them.
5 sessions are included:
Why Should We Care About Heaven
What is Heaven Like?
When Does a Person Go to Heaven?
Where is Heaven?
Who Goes to Heaven
and...
a special message of hope from Sonja to women
who have experienced miscarriages
The Conversation Guide is written for both believers and non-believers in everyday language to help group members discover what the Bible teaches about heaven. It includes key Bible passages about heaven, helping them understand more about who goes to heaven, when they go there, and what heaven is like. Group discussion starter questions, a guide for personal reflection, journaling, and applications for daily life are part of each session.
The DVD-curriculum and guide are a good platform for discussing physical death and heaven. The most helpful item in this curriculum is the Conversation Guide. The scripture is shared in context to each of the sessions making it a wonderful resource. I would recommend Heaven is for Real DVD-based Conversation Kit for everyone!
Remember.... read the book first!

The best-selling book about a 4 year old boy's visit to heaven is now a DVD-based conversation kit for churches and small groups. Each of the 5 video session features Todd, Sonja, and Colton Burpo , answering questions asked by Natalie Tysdal, the Denver FOX/CW News reporter.
Features include:
--5 (10- to 18-minute) video sessions featuring Todd, Sonja, and Colton answering frequently asked questions about heaven and their experiences
--A special message of hope from Sonja to women who have experienced miscarriages
--Conversation Guide written for both believers and non-believers in accessible language to help group members discover what the Bible teaches about heaven
I really wanted to like this, but frankly, I got a bit bored with the same predictable questions and answers. I had read the book, and I have to say that I have read others on the same subject that held my interest better. However, I had hopes the dvd would be a great tool for a small discussion group. I enjoyed a radio interview I had heard with Todd Burpo, so I knew the potential was there for an interesting discussion. I am a Christian and have no doubt that Heaven is for real....and better than anything I can imagine. I do not doubt the veracity of this child in his telling of his experience, but this dvd curriculum appeared to be a hastily cobbled together production. Re-enactments, a bit more enthusiasm with the onscreen participants, indepth research, and better editing would have greatly improved this study. It has good points and it is a conversation starter, so I would rank this 3 out of 5 stars.
