The Quotable Chesterton: The Wit and Wisdom of G.K. Chesterton by Kevin Belmonte is a fascinating collection of quotes from the writings of G.K. Chesterton. I really loved that each quote was organized by topic, in alphabetical order. It is such a great format because I like being able to pick up the book and browse though it by topic. I very much enjoyed reading these quotes from his writings because it really shows that he was a man with such deep insight, but also with such great wit, which I think many people will appreciate also. His views are absolutely fascinating and it such a joy to read such an excellent compilation of quotes. It is a book that I did not want to put down! I really appreciate his sense of humor and the fact that he had such a way with words. It is a wonderful collection of quotes that you can just get lost in for hours. (And love every minute of it.) The quotations of G.K. Chestermon's writings were compiled by Kevin Belmonte and in a very wonderful format, that I very much enjoyed reading. Thank you to Thomas Nelson Publishers for such a wonderful gift!

Christianity has not been tried and found wanting; it has been found difficult and not tried.
- G.K. Chesterton
The above example is part of the wit and wisdom of novelist, playwright, and intellectual Christian G.K. Chesterton. You will find these types of quotes, as the title suggests, in The Quotable Chesterton by Kevin Belmonte. Chesterton did not shy away from expressing his thoughts and opinions on everything from religion to politics to education and more. Although he passed away in 1936, his observations on the human condition remain relevant today.
I would classify this book as a reference book and a good conversation starter. As a homeschooler, I could imagine choosing a topic or quote to develop as a writing assignment. Making a speech or writing a research paper? Turn to this book for an applicable quote.
I also consider it an apologetics book of sorts since G.K. Chesterton is a famous historical figure who defended the Christian faith staunchly. He was considered an eloquent literarian by Time magazine and a "man of colossal genius" by his contemporary George Bernard Shaw.
The Quotable Chesterton makes a nice addition to the reference section of the Christian homeschooler's home library.

I received a complimentary copy of this book to be reviewed for Thomas Nelson Publishing Co. This collection of G K Chesterton's quotations was thoroughly enjoyable and I will be referencing this book for years to come. His wisdom and humor are evident as is his prowess as a literary critic, journalist and essayist. He is referred to as a " man of letters" who has " endearing influence". I concur. His ability to quote the works of other literary giants, from memory is amazing and a constant source of consternation to his editors. Truly an enjoyable book to read, underline for use in the future and easily referenced as it the quotations are headed alphabetically as well as topically. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the words of his critics which were interspersed throughout the book. Overall, an enlightening and pleasurable way to get to know such a wise and witty man.

The Quotable Chesterton is a brilliant book, it gives the reader a wonderful look back at much of what G.K. Chesterton wrote in his books from yester year. Books which are now much of a rarity and quite hard to get hold of. However the quotes in this book show that his thoughts and writings are just as relevant today as they were in his day.
A variety of subjects are explored and commented on. Chestertons wit comes across easily as his writing easy easy to read and enjoy.
Definately a good book and a worth while read, Very much recomended to anyone who wishes to explore this writers works or even just to waste away a sunday afternoon...and night...and next day.. 850 pages of wonder.

Some books you get into your hands can be read decently enough. A few days to a week really. Then you have some types of books that you can read but only a little bit at a time. What those types of books are really depends on the individual person. For me a book full of quotes fits into the second category. That is the type of book I am reviewing today.
“The Quotable Chesterton” by Kevin Belmonte is a book I am really looking forward to getting through. I have read some of it, but would not be able to finish through in the time frame required for this review. I am not the kind of person who can quickly read over quotes, especially from someone like G.K. Chesterton. I can read so far then I have to just sit and ponder, savor, and digest the wisdom contained in the words. This book is the kind that is slam chock full of heavy thoughts.
The book itself is arranged by topic and the topics in alphabetical order. Belmonte did a good job of giving the reader just enough quotes on each topic to wet your appetite for more of Chesterton thoughts. It will make you want to go and find the writings that these quotes are pulled from. At least it is what the book did for me, and that after only reading a tiny bit of it.

My only experience with Chesterton before this book was his famous novel, The Man Who Was Thursday. Chesterton has influenced many with his various writings, not the least was C.S. Lewis. Chesterton's most famous works are the previously mentioned novel and an apologetics book called Orthodoxy. He also wrote a collection of detective novels known as The Father Brown Mysteries. He was an influential with many forms of writing and as a lecturer and speaker. The defining thing about G.K. Chesterton is his faith. Everything he wrote, everything he said was influenced by his faith in Jesus Christ.
This book is a collection of quotes from the many and varied writings by this great author. This book was not intended to be read straight through, but to be used as a source for quotes. This would be highly useful for pastors, teachers, bloggers, and even for posting on Facebook. I took the time to highlight many of these and am currently posting them on my Facebook page. The quotes are grouped alphabetically by topic so they will be easy to find. Included in the book are some articles about who Chesterton was. This is by no means a biography, but it does help you know a little more about the man. If you are interested in a biography about Chesterton, the author of this book, Kevin Belmonte has also written one.
Here are a few quotes that show how Christ influenced Chesterton's writings.
The true answer of philosophy and theology is that there is nothing the matter with the human body; the trouble is with the human soul.
There was a man who dwelt in the east centuries ago,
And now I cannot look at a sheep or a sparrow,
A lily or a cornfield, a raven or a sunset,
A vineyard or a mountain, without thinking of him.
Once abolish the God, and the government becomes the God.
I think this book would be a great addition to anyone's library, especially for those who like to have great quotes to use in many situations.
