Thomas Nelson Pujols: More Than the Game

Amazing stats---and amazing grace---have made Albert Pujols one of the greatest baseball players of all time! The St. Louis Cardinals infielder is famous and feared for his all-around playing ability---hitting for average and power, base-running, and fielding. But when adulation comes his way, Pujols points people to his personal hero---Jesus Christ. 304 pages, hardcover from Nelson.

Pujols: More Than The Game
Ask me who the best player in baseball is and without question I will answer Albert Pujols. But even with his monster numbers for the last decade his skills aren’t solely why I place him on the top of the list. What sets him apart from a group of elite athletes is simply one thing. The man behind the name. “Pujols: More Than The Game” by Scott Lamb and Tim Ellsworth is inspiring biography of the real Albert Pujols. The book encompasses many examples of Pujols’ staggering talent in the game, and his dedicated work ethic. But it also focus’s on what’s most important to him. His faith and his family. The book is about how his faith shines through every aspect of his life. From his career, his family, and his foundation. In an era of steroids, corruption and selfishness, its refreshing to know there’s someone still true to baseball. It’s great to have someone to believe in.
Being a huge Cardinals fan this was an easy choice to read. I loved the book. Even though I already had a good idea of Pujols’ character and faith this book just set in stone what I already knew. Albert Pujols is a true hero. Not just on the field, but off. My favorite part of the book was the chapters about his faith and his foundation. I was truly inspired by all the work he’s done and I admire the fact he gives all the honor and glory to God.
If there was any negativity in the book I would say it would have to be all the stats and numbers. If you aren’t a baseball fan, the walk through each season of Pujol’s career would be rather boring. Plus the stats would have little meaning, they would just be numbers on a page.
Overall I was happy with the book. It gave excellent insight on the best baseball player to ever walk the field. I admire and look up to the man, and I’m proud to have him on my Cardinals team. If you doubt the guy for any reason, from steroids, faith, or integrity, you should read the book. A must read for Cardinal fans, but a great read for any baseball fan.

Baseball season has opened up again and I want to recommend some spring reading for the baseball fan. The book, Pujols More Than the Game by Scott Lamb and Tim Ellsworth, is a great read. The book is packed full of baseball stats and recounting of Albert Pujols' journey from High School baseball to his current status of Major League great. What I like most about the book is that unlike other books about famous Christian coaches and players that merely talk about character, honor, integrity, or other admirable qualities, it speaks a lot about Pujols' walk and belief in Christ. A quote from Albert highlights chapter seventeen - "Baseball is simply my platform to elevate Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior." This is a great chapter on he and his wife's passion for sharing the Gospel. I believe all will enjoy this book, baseball fan or not.

I just finished reading the book, “Pujols: More Than the Game” by Scott Lamb and Tim Ellsworth, and I found it to be a very interesting book. This is the story of Albert Pujols life: from his early childhood in the Dominican Republic to high school in the United States, his baseball career from childhood to the minor leagues and then into the majors, and most importantly, his Faith in God.
I am not a sports fanatic, but I do enjoy watching a little with my husband. I didn’t pick up this book for the baseball aspect of the book. I wanted to read the story of a person’s life and faith in Christ. I found Pujols story to be interesting but with a few too many sports statistics for it to be one of my favorites. I am planning on giving this book to my brother who I think with really love it as he finds all those statistics to be interesting and learns them for many baseball players. I enjoy getting to know a person and now I find that when I hear about Pujols on the news, I am more interested because I feel like I know him personally. I would highly recommend this book to all the sports lovers out there.

As a mother of three sons, I am engrossed in spring baseball season! So I was interested to read Pujols: More than a Game to get to know this man that my boys have referenced many times. I was impressed to know what a Godly man, father, teammate and public figure Albert Pujols strives to be. This is the story of his life, rise to fame, and baseball statistics that have made him a household name.
I really enjoyed the writing style of Lamb and Ellsworth, poetically descriptive at times and at others, simply the stats and play by plays. I loved the chapters about his life, meeting and serving the Lord with his wife, and how he ministers to people in the Dominican Republic and St. Louis. There were lots of chapters though with simply descriptions of games, stats and his rise up the baseball ladder. I personally did not enjoy those chapters, but I know my kids and other baseball lovers will really get into them.
After reading this book, I can now really cheer for Pujols, knowing the man that he is striving to be. I am also praying that as my boys read this book, they will learn lessons about their walk with the Lord that will carry them throughout their lives.

Scott Lamb and Tim Ellsworth allows baseball fans to get a deeper look and insight on what matter's most to Pujols, his relationship and faith in Jesus Christ. It's not all about baseball here, Pujols lives everyday knowing that there is a higher power behind it all, God and his Son Jesus! Even though Pujols has a chance at being known has the greatest player of baseball of all time, God is ultimately first in his life.
I'm not a huge sport buff, but reading this book has given me a better understanding that a baseball player, such as Pujols, doesn't just live life by the throw of a ball and the swing of a baseball bat, but that Pujols is more focused on Jesus. I have a greater respect for Pujols and his efforts to make the best of his life on and off the field. Many times an athlete can get caught up in themselves when they become a great athlete and lose the sense and purpose of what really matters most. I recommend this book mostly to baseball fans or sports fans in general. This book highlights Pujols stats and why he has a chance to be known as the greatest baseball player of all time!

This well written book follows the life of Major League Baseball player Albert Pujols. The story begins with his youth and follows him through the year 2010. While the book places focus on his career, it also discusses at length his strong faith.
The story reveals how Pujols found salvation and has carried his love for Christ with him throughout his baseball career. Pujol’s childhood and family are discussed as well as his wife and children. Isabella, a child with Down Syndrome, is also covered.
A reader would need some basic knowledge of the game of baseball in order to easily follow the story as baseball terminology is used. Outside of this, the story can be easily read and followed.
This book definitely tugged at my heartstrings. There were moments when I cried tears of heartache over the battles that Pujols faced. There were also awing moments that left tears on my face as I was able to truly appreciate his efforts for the Lord.
I was inspired by the message and amazed at where this man started out in life and where he is today. My spirit thoroughly enjoyed the read!
This was an excellent book that I would highly recommend to others! I would specifically have parents that have teenage sons involved in athletics, especially baseball, purchase this book for their child(ren). This would make a great gift for a student involved in Christian athletic organizations or a long-time baseball fan. Additionally, parents that have a child with Down Syndrome may appreciate the story. It is also a great choice for anyone that has a joy for reading!

Recently I received a copy of a new title sure to interest baseball fans as well as Christian biography lovers. Scott Lamb and Tim Ellsworth have teamed up to write about contemporary baseball legend Albert Pujols, truly a legend in his own time. Admittedly, I am taking their word for Pujols’ athletic skill as I am not much of a sports fan myself. Yet once I began reading this book last night I found myself turning pages late into the night and finding myself very interested in this man’s already amazing life and his journey from his childhood in the Dominican Republic to the St. Louis Cardinals and playing in the World Series.
In Pujols: More Than the Game Lamb and Ellsworth recount not only Pujols’ life but also his Christian faith. Though I have not yet completed reading this title, already I see many admirable character qualities in Pujols, such as a strong work ethic and a strong faith. I anticipate seeing the faith of Albert and his wife Dee Dee blossom through victories as well as trials in this well-written biography sure to delight baseball fans. Consider purchasing for someone you love who would be encouraged by reading about a real-life hero–a man of faith who just happens to be one of the greatest baseball players of our time.
Disclosure: Thomas Nelson sent me a complimentary galley proof of this title in the hope that I would read and review it or otherwise help the authors promote it. No other compensation was received, and opinions remain my own.

For anyone that follows baseball, you most likely already know who Albert Pujols is. Pujols is a star on and off the field representing the Christian athletes of the world in a positive way.
This book is a great read, following Pujol's career up to 2010. Baseball fans and non-fans alike will enjoy this biography of this upbeat and amazing athlete. An avid sports enthusiast I have not followed baseball as much over the years as I have some other sports. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this mans stories from his childood struggles to his success as a man and all he has done for his community. One thing I really admired about Pujols is at every opportunity he credits God and his faith in Jesus Christ for his success.
I rate this book a 5 out of 5. I believe this book is good for all ages and encourage everyone to pick up a copy and share it with your fellow sports enthusiasts. This book is inspirational and informative. I really enjoyed reading this book.

Pujols More Than The Game by Scott Lamb & Tim Ellsworth
Book is about Albert Pujols, a Cardinals baseball player who is one of the best hitters in history. Title of the book gives the reader an indication that Pujols life, and the book are not only about baseball. In fact, Pujols is a Christian and philanthropist. I read this book because I wanted to read a story of a famous sports person who is in the news for a reason other than poor decisions.
I am not a sports fan, so when family and friends saw what book I was reading, they were all surprised. However, when I gave a brief description of the book, and the parts of the book that I was interested in, then they understood. I received this book from a Christian publishing house for free in exchange for an honest review. I stay away from books, articles and reports on sports stars, so I thought that this book gave me a perfect opportunity to read a book about a Christian athlete. In all honesty, I’ve heard of athletes who proclaim their love and praise of God, yet their actions do not indicate a strong relationship with God. This book depicts an athlete with a true love of Christ, and a true commitment to following Christ.
The book is definitely geared to sports fans who appreciate the numerous statistics, season history, and team lineups. Pujols entire history is given in regards to where he lived, with whom, and how he ended up playing for the Cardinals. I truly appreciated the numerous examples of Pujolses lives which shows that they do walk the walk; they don’t simply talk about being Christian, they don’t simply praise God for Pujols insane batting ability. Both Albert & his wife Dee Dee have lives where Christ is first and foremost.
I am very glad I read this book because it reminded me of the fact that Christians come in all forms, all careers, all cultures. Pujols life gives me hope for more athletes to live a Christian life. And most importantly, the book opened my horizons to looking at sports and athletes in a new light.
I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze.com book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

“At the end of the day as long as I glorify Him and those 45,000 people know who I represent out there every time I step out on the field, that’s what it’s about. It’s about representing God.” –Albert Pujols (p. II)
I think this quote very adequately describes both Albert Pujols and this book. It’s about glorifying God. From humble beginnings in the Dominican Republic to his meteoric rise to fame in the US, outstanding athletic ability, strong work ethic, and faith God make him one of the most easily likable celebrities of our day. This book covers it all.
I really love a biography that doesn’t just outline a person’s accomplishments but really digs deeper, revealing the person behind the image. This book delivers. Pujols is more than just an outstanding ball player – he is a man of integrity. While the authors cover the details of his rise to fame in baseball, they also cover his conversion, his devotion to his wife and kids, and what drives him most – his faith.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone, but particularly to people with teenage boys. I think this is the type of book that may help young adults see how to be a man of integrity in whatever they do, and that serving the Lord is the most important aspect of their life.
I must mention that I received a complimentary review copy of this book from Thomas Nelson’s BookSneeze program. That in no way influenced my opinion of it.

Around here with so many boys in the house Baseball and other sports are always a running conversation around here and one of my hubby's favorite Baseball players is Albert Pujols so when I was presented with the opportunity to review his book I was so excited to be able to get it for my hubby. My hubby has only recently taken a liking to reading and I knew this would be a wonderful opportunity to strengthen his love for reading good quality Christian books by him being able to read about his favorite ball player and now that he is finished reading it he has passed it onto our middle son to read as well.
Here is what the publisher has to say about this wonderful book:
A powerful story of the athleticism and strong faith of Albert Pujols, one of the all-time greatest baseball players.
It is for good reason that Albert Pujols routinely tops the list of the greatest players in modern Major League Baseball. Among all Major Leaguers who ever played the game, Pujols already ranks in the top twenty in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, and adjusted on-base plus slugging. He is simply one of the greatest offensive players in baseball history.
But when the adulation comes his way, Pujols points people to an even greater hero, directing them to Christ. “At the end of the day,” he says, “as long as I glorify him, and those 45,000 people know who I represent every time I step out on the field, that’s what it’s about. It’s about representing God.” This book will satisfy MLB fans who like baseball slathered in amazing stats, and it will shed light on the faith that makes it all possible.
My husband thoroughly enojed reading this book and getting to know his favorite ball players story of his walk with God as well as how God has influenced his game of ball and also the Game of Life.
I highly recommend this for the sports fan in your life, it will give them new insight to the man behind the jersey.

“PUJOLS More Than The Game,” is written by Scott Lamb and Tim Ellsworth. Those who know baseball know of the existence of Albert Pujols, but this book brings to the surface not only what he has done on the field, but also the purpose of his existence, the very reason he lives.
Within the pages of this biography, the avid baseball fan is smothered with statistical information that demonstrates Pujols’ dominance in the game of baseball. Through this information, we see that within his short amount of time in the game he is already among the elite, among the best to ever grace the field, among the best to ever stand up to the plate.
Albert’s dominance in the game of baseball might not come as a surprise if you are a loyal Cardinals fan or a rival Cubs supporter, but the attention he gives to his faith might amaze you. This surprise comes to many because it is a part of him that is left out and/or downplayed by most media outlets. They desire to report on his abilities as a baseball player but want to set aside his ability to affect the world through his faith.
In his own words, found on page 139, Albert describes his life’s purpose, his reason for existing, “Baseball is simply my platform to elevate Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior.” After reading this book, I have been encouraged by the faith of Albert Pujols. Not only is he a great baseball player, he is also a great man of God.
This book is a must read by all of who love the game of baseball, but even more so by all who love the Lord.

This is a great book for any baseball fan, (well, maybe not a Cubs fan… ) who longs to see what a Christian baseball player really looks like. It not only recounts the great moments in his baseball career, it also recounts the important moments in his life that point to God. From his childhood in the Dominican Republic, to his meeting of his wife, to the World Series won in 2006 (which was an amazing series), the pages of this book clearly show Pujols dedication to God.
I always knew Pujols was different, not just because of his stats, but I didn’ t know why exactly. This book showed me why. Not only is he a great baseball player, he’s a great Christian who uses his profession to further God’s kingdom.

Pujols: More Than a Game is more than a story of Alberto Pujols rise to fame in the St. Louis Cardinals franchise. It’s the story of who Jose Alberto Pujols is as a man, an athlete, a humanitarian, a philanthropist and all around great guy. From his humble beginnings in the Dominican Republic to his multi-million dollar contract years playing America’s favorite pastime, More Than a Game gives you the story that doesn’t get told on ESPN Sportscenter.
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I began reading this book. I’m not a St. Louis Cardinals fan and to tell the truth I’m not even that big a fan of baseball. But I am interested in stories of character, integrity, and humility. A few years ago I heard an interview on Focus on the Family with Albert and Dede Pujols. What he had to say there and what he professed as a believer, made me sit up and listen. So I was intrigued to read this book.
This book is basically just an overview of who Albert is. If you like baseball and statistics and need a role model to look up to, this book provides just enough information to wet your appetite. I would have liked more information on where he came from and how he got to the U.S. instead of all of the space spent on baseball statistics. I wish there were more details in the development of his relationship with his wife and kids. I would like to know how to be involved with his foundations and charities. This book does however explain and focus on Who has blessed Pujols with his talent and his willingness and eagerness to share Christ with others.
If you’re a baseball fan, a Cards fan, or just interested in Pujols himself, this book will give you a glance at all three.

Albert Pujols is a name I was not familiar with before receiving this book. My basic knowledge of him came from reading the back cover of the dust jacket. It seems he is a well known baseball player for the St. Louis Cardinals, and is considered to be one of the top 20 players of all times, ranking right up there with Ruth and Dimagio. Baseball is not Pujols life, it is just something he uses to share his love of Christ with the 40,000 some people that watch his games. He fully believes his Faith comes first, followed by his family, and then, finally baseball.
I was anticipating that this would be a great book for my husband, but who knew that I would enjoy it also? It did seem intriguing from the start, but I worried there might be a bit to much baseball statistics in it for my like. But I found myself fully engrossed after the first chapter, and before I knew it, I just kept going!
This book would be excellent as a valentine's gift for a husband, father, brother, or boyfriend. And my little piece of advice? Read it before you gift it! :)
