In the 16 years I have been reading about personal finance (specifically, debt-free living), I have read a lot of books, studies, articles and scriptures on the topic and have gathered a ton of tips and advice.

And after the umpteenth book, I've been tempted to conclude, "You've read one get-out-of-debt-book, you've read them all."

Amie Streater's "Your Money God's Way: Overcoming the 7 Money Myths that Keep Christians Broke" is different. But in a surprising way.

She uses words like "stupid," "annoying" and "creeped out." The woman doesn't pull any punches. She tells it like it is.

But once you get over the shock of reading sentences such as, "That's the stupidest thing I have ever heard!" you grow to appreciate her candor.

She's the Dr. Phil of Christian debt counseling.

And, yes, she is a Christian counselor - an "associate pastor for financial stewardship" who has met with countless individuals and couples who have screwed up their lives with bad money decisions.

(Haven't we all screwed up royally in one way or another?)

Streater's style may be blunt, but she offers solutions. She points out our "counterfeit convictions" and counters them with biblical wisdom, citing scripture to back up her advice. Many of those verses talk of God's grace and his abundant love for us. He doesn't want us to "live in chaos, frustration, lack, and debt," she concludes.

And Streater doesn't just talk the talk. She has walked the walk and lived to tell about it.

After all, God uses the fears and foibles we have overcome (with His help) to lead others to the light.

This book gives light. You'll profit by reading it.

I was a little nervous when I picked up this book that it would contrast the financial program by Dave Ramsey that my husband are trying to follow. But when I saw Dave's review of her book on the cover, it gave me his blessing to dive in. And I was so glad I did. This book should be required for everyone who goes through Dave's program because Streater helps you to look at your motivations for why you have been making poor financial decisions. She shows 7 myths that people hold about money and confronts them with God's truth. This book was so practical and down to earth, not just about financial issues, but about heart issues on so many levels. Streater is bold in her confrontations about poor decisions, but because she prefaces that with her own story of mistakes, it comes across as a friend giving you a kick in the pants instead of an expert belittling you. I am inspired to carry on with our financial changes and now have God's truth to back up my decisions.

When I saw this book, I thought, "Oh, another book for Christians, teaching us/them how to handle their money blah blah..."

Well, I was right but...it was not what I expected. At all. Amie Streater does not sugar coat the fact that a lot of us are dumb or ignorant with our money. Sorry. No nice talk or "I'm sorry honey" talk here. She teaches us how to live in our means financially. You don't need designer clothes, a big house, lots of stuff to fill it, a really nice car, etc. Most of us would love that. I know I would. I personally have lived in small places all my life so living in a bigger place is my goal. I want some elbow room! But if it isn't in our means financially...oh well.

And she isn't saying we can't have that. She is saying we don't need that. Especially if we can't afford it. Pretty much, stop spending beyond your means. Which a lot of people do; especially with credit cards. While reading this book, all I kept saying to myself was, 'Oh man...I do that...But I don't want to give that up!!' But I know deep down I need to in order to see myself and my family financially clean. No debt. Have a savings built up. Able to give to charities especially during the holidays. Since reading this book, I have gotten our finances in much better order. And I am proud of myself for that:)

I have so many thoughts and feelings about this book. Bottom line, I think this is a must have for every person, couple, and family out there. Weather you are in debt or not. If your not, great! This book will teach you and help you how to avoid debt with common sense strategies and biblical wisdom. And if you are in dept, this book will be a real eye opener. A real kick in the pants. But you will come out of it. Amie Streater will tell you what you need to get rid of, stop doing, and start doing. It won't be easy. It'll be challenging, trust me! But it is completely worth it. This book is a must have.

Although at times what I read wasn't easy because Amie was saying what needed to do and I didn't want to do, but after finally relenting and doing it. I was proud of myself. This book is hard to read at times because we get told things we don't want to hear; but it is very inspirational. It really is a tremendous help. And when you save money and pay your bills, you feel better about yourself and more relaxed. Who doesn't want that?

I recommend this book to every person I know and meet.

"Your Money, God's Way" by Amie Streamer was not at all what I was expecting. I was expecting a How To book on finances. Instead I was pleasantly surprised to find a How Come book on finances. Amie Streamer explores the 7 most common myths that keep people (in particular christians) broke. I have no doubt in my mind that should Amie Streamer and I ever meet we would become instant BFFs because I love her hammer on your thick skull approach. Why are you broke? Cuz you were dumb BUT God is gracious and you can get out of this mess even though it will be hard. By the end of "Your Money, God's Way" I felt very ready to re-estabish a realistic budget and quite enpowered. The last chapters do give a bit of How To so that you aren't left hanging. Good Read!!

Talking about money is not something Christian typically tend to think about unless we are discussing tithing and giving to missions. For most of us, it is also not something we receive much training in therefore we develop a lot of misconceptions fed to us by the consumer world. Your Money Gods Way is a wonderful book written by Amie Streater that helps us to overcome the money myths that tend to keep us broke or wishing we had more to spare. Amy comes from a position of experience. She was once living a very good life with all the luxuries but barely had enough to make the payments on her bills and support the lifestyle she was living. This book gives us some solid advice with a good Christian background, much like the well known financial planning series by David Ramsey. According to Ramsey, Amie delivers a powerful message of common sense and biblical wisdom that todays churchgoers desperately need. The book is written in a format that addresses common myths that we believe about money, including scriptural references throughout the book. Each chapter ends with a prayer to help us focus on the correct issues and gives us solutions for making changes in our current situation. I think that every Christian should consider the concepts of this book to improve upon our financial standard of living.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze.com book review bloggers program.
