Adelina is a young Christian woman who has to learn to be brave and sacrifice for others, when she is forced to marry the Herzog or be the cause for her cenoby's fall. Remembering the scripture, “Greater love hath no man than he lay down his life for his friend.”
she bravely accepts his proposal. As time passes she is faced with cruelty, heathen practices, and a mother-in-law set on her destruction! This charming tale illustrates a strong Christian woman and her walk with the Lord.

This is a refreshingly wholesome, (but not boring!) touching story. Though written with "Old English" it is easy enough to understand. Though it seems a bit boring at first, just wait, it gets better!! The unexpected twists to this ancient tale kept me turning the pages! It is a wonderful example of being a true lady and standing up for Christ, no matter what the cost. In the end, Adelina is rewarded for her faithfulness to Jesus, and others are drawn to Him because of her allowing Jesus to use her. She is only human, but chooses God's way above an easy life, and is a great inpiration to me!

I received this book as a gift, and loved it! I was concerned that maybe it would be overly romantic, or novel-ish. It wasn't. It is written more as a biography than a novel. Adelina is the daughter of an Irish missionary couple, to Germany. On the day of her baptism at age 17, three events destined to change her life occur- the death of her mother, the suit of a young noble, Gisilhar, and the death of the Christian ruler. His son, Hedan, ascends to the throne, however this son is easily influenced by his pagan mother, and by his own pride. In order to assert himself, Hedan dismisses Gisilhar, and seeks ways to persecute the church. On his way to forbid the ringing of the chapel bells, he meets Adelina, engaged in an act of mercy. Hedan is so smitten with her, that he decides to take her as his Herzogin.Geilah, Hedan's mother, determines to destroy her son's relationship with his wife, and thereby gain the upper hand. Her main goal is to destroy the church. She hires a servant, who, at the prompting of the druid priest, swears on his right hand, that the late Herzog recanted Christianity. He pays dearly for his lies, and Geilah is banished. For a time, Adelina's new life is happy and peaceful. Then rumors of war necessitate a gathering of nobles. Sadly, Hedan misinterprets a look of recognition between Gisilhar and Adelina. In a fit of jealousy, Hedan summons his mother back, to watch Adelina while he is gone, defending his borders.Geilah does not lose a single opportunity of harassing Adelina, and at last succeeds in driving her away. She plans to use Adelina's flight as a proof of infidelity. However, God thwarts her plans in the most unexpected ways!I really enjoyed it because it is well written, and encouraging. I would definitely give it as a gift, or recommend it for any young lady.

From across the ages thirteen centuries ago, when the fearless Scottish and Irish missionary bands are sent out from the Isle of Iona comes the story of a virtuous young woman of unshakable faith, filled with determination to fulfill the role to which God has called her. She finds herself whisked away from a simple life to become the queen of a kingdom where she wrestles with temptations from her past and faces down enemies intent on her demise.Based on a true story, this Esther-like tale recounts the deeds of the courageous Adelina of the ancient German Culdee church as she endures and overcomes persecution, slander, exile, and the impending destruction of her people. In the end, she is used by God to see the hope of the Gospel of Jesus Christ shine forth and prevail!
