Bethany House Systematic Theology Volumes 1-4

Geisler's complete masterpiece! Volume 1 covers the existence of God; truth's inevitability; divine revelation; and Scripture's origin and inspiration. Volume 2 addresses God's attributes and his working in history. Volume 3 examines sin; its defeat by Christ; and the assurance of heaven. Volume 4 studies church history and administration; and end-times theories. 2624 pages total, four hardcovers from Bethany.

I purchased this set of books before beginning Bible college in 2009. Since then, I've used them for my undergrad classes and now in seminary. Dr. Norman Geisler's scholarship shows within the covers of these volumes.
This collection should be in every pastor, scholar, and Bible students' library.

The overall four volume set is good to have but at times it seems he uses the church fathers to back up his statements and on closer reading (the church fathers) it appears not quite correct. However, I will still continue to read this set and keep checking to see if I am mis reading him or the church fathers.

I am not a Pastor, Professor just a believer that wanted more information about what we as Christians believe. These are amazing books. I found them very helpful. I am just about to start a second read through.

I recently purchased Geislers entire four-volume set of Systematic Theology and I must say that my purchase was long overdue. It is of my opinion that this set should be within arm reach of every serious pastor, Biblical researcher, and Christian professor.

The book was good if you like Systematic Theologies. This one had some problems. The author clearly does not believe in Genesis and has some heretical views concerning the fall. He further is somewhat dishonest. He references verses and Church fathers as agreeing with him when in fact they teach the opposite. He did a detestable job of research for the book and is very selective on what facts he gave and they were interpreted by his secret hermeneutic that all dispensationals have. Overall I'd say that apart from the dishonesty, unorthodox views of creation, and the entire second part of volume four which not only was illogical but unbiblical. In fact, from the beginning of the Church until the 1800s religious apostasy the only view the Church held concerning last things was Historicism and he never even mentioned that it existed and in fact lied by ascribing futurism to people who clearly and openly opposed the system.

Geisler's Systematic Theology is arguably the best work in this discipline to date. He presents each point with a 3 tier defense that render each doctrine virtually insurmountable. This isn't to say that one cannot argue with him, but, rather, that he makes it quite difficult. He presents a very balanced theology, and is fair, in all respects, to "doubtful" areas, such as the age of the earth and other variants. There is no doubt that this is a "masterpiece" as the blurb states. I have thoroughly read the first three volumes. This is an indispensable resource for any serious Bible student, evangelist, pastor, theologian, or defender of the faith.

It is interesting to me that another reviewer thinks Geisler to be completely Calvinistic in his belief system. Chapter 12 of volume three is entitled The Extent of Salvation (Limited or Unlimited Atonement). Geisler gives one of the most balanced philosophical/scholarly treatments of this topic that I have seen but in his conclusion he squarely sides against limited atonement. This puts him at odds with many staunch Calvinists. To temper this slightly, the next chapter entitled The Extent of Salvation (Universalism) has the following statement in its opening paragraphs...... the Atonement is unlimited in its extent (Christ died for all), but it is limited in its application, since not all believe, and God has willed that only those who believe can be saved.I use many systematic theologies as I prepare to teach. I find that I always go to this one not only for solid, well balanced information, but also for the resources contained within. It is will documented and the reference system is easy to follow. It's a great addition to any theological library.

Much more thorough than many systematic theologies, and very helpful. Geisler is a Calvinistic, dispensational/premillennialist. Unfortunately, he comes to the erroneous conclusion that not all the gifts of the Holy Spirit are for today. If you are charismatic or want to hear a more accurate representation of New Testament teaching in this area, I would also get "Renewal Theology," by J. Rodman Williams. Nevertheless, Geisler's detailed explanations from different points of view in each branch of theology are invaluable, and I expect to turn to it for years.
