What an amazing journey this book has been able to take me on! I constantly struggle with guilt and how I make mistakes in my parenting. I mean, who doesn't want to be the perfect parent right? I read, and read, and READ every parenting book I can get my hands on, and before I know it I am more confused and more frustrated about what I am actually supposed to do, or NOT do. My children are miserable, my husband is miserable, I am beyond miserable and this downward spiral just keeps happening. Then I read The Passionate Mom- this is real folks. Real life. It's a gentle, forgiving and uplifting guide that will help you to be the very best parent you can be! Simply put, raw emotion and real-life experience from the author reminds us that we are not alone in this parenting journey and that we all have struggles. Although I am not a religious person, Susan has taken simple religious teachings to give us a easy reminder of how to get back to the simple basics. She talks mostly about being passionate but there is such a much bigger lesson to be learned here. Each chapter made me want to go back and read it again, just in case I missed something. It's that good, get this book. You won't be disappointed!

Wow. The Passionate Mom is truly a life changing book. I have been recommending it to other moms since the moment I started reading. And its lessons can be applied to much more than just parenting! The 10 P’s are great lessons that can be applied to anything you are passionate about. The mortar lists at the end of each chapter are great character building traits that I pray I can build within myself and my sons. This is a must read for any Mom and will be my go to baby shower gift! Love it!

The Passionate Mom by Susan Merrill is a book written for moms who are passionate to parent their children in purposeful ways. Susan's practical and biblical building blocks come from the book of Nehemiah in the Bible. There are ten ways a mother needs to cultivate as parent well: perception, pondering, passion, prayer, patience, preparation, purpose, planning, problem solving and perseverance. Each chapter outlines solid principles with Susan's real life examples, confessions and powerful encouragement to inspire moms to dare to be the parent that God has desired for them.
I thought I was a passionate mom, but after reading this book I feel like I've been given the tools to really be the passionate mom I want to be. I was very intrigued with Susan's connection of how to be a mom with the story of Nehemiah. She strategically wrote step by step exactly how to embrace the high calling of a mom and rely totally on God for all that is needed. She identified so many areas that I need to work on and also addressed areas I hadn't even thought of yet like dating, computers, cell phones and social media (my kids are still very young). I was very impressed, encouraged and inspired to pursue being a passionate mom. This book is a definite must have for moms who need biblical, practical and honest truth to pursue God's desire for motherhood in their lives.

Let’s face it being a mother is the best job in the world, but it can also be an isolating and very hard job as well. This book gives many real world examples that make you realize that as a mother you are not alone! When you have a newborn, there is a plan for everything, a plan for sleeping, a plan for eating, etc. As your child grows, things change and a different kind of plan is needed, but what kind of plan and where do you find this plan? The Passionate Mom gives you a plan and gives you encouragement!! In this book, a step by step plan is outlined based on the book of Nehemiah. It is a very helpful and easy read. I highly recommend this book to any Mom!

Wow! What an incredible book. The Passionate Mom by Susan Merrill is a fantastic book for every mother. This book has to be the most refreshing, honest, thought provoking books on motherhood that I've ever read. She uses the book of Nehemiah from the Bible to draw out wisdom, advice and guidance for being a mom in today's world. She's honest about the trials as well as the joys of motherhood and you feel like you're right in the trenches with her not just reading about a mom who has it all together telling you how to do/be better. Every mother NEEDS to read this book!

The Passionate Mom by Susan Merrill is a positive book that focuses on the influence of mothers. I wanted to see if this book was any different than all my other "Mom" instruction books, and I found it really was refreshing! The theme is practical with the "bricks" we need for building being qualities we must work on in ourselves. The author is just so REAL in this book about her imperfections as a mom, so when she is handing you these "bricks", you do not feel judged or discouraged. After reading it, you feel positive about being a mom, and you feel like you have some new tools to handle the variety of situations that arise for a mom. I came away being spiritually encouraged and would recommend this book to moms of all ages and even "expecting" moms as a definite must read!

The Passionate Mom uses the story of Nehemiah, from the Bible, to illustrate just what a "passionate" mom should bring to her work of raising children. Written from a Christian-perspective, but well-worth the time of any parent from any religious background (or no religious background at all), Merrill creates a strong analogy between Nehemiah and his story and a parent and his/her story. (While the book talks to mothers specifically, I think fathers can take away a lot from the book, too.) Interestingly, Nehemiah never had children, but was tasked with creating a wall to safeguard God's temple in a city which had been destroyed. According to Merrill, a mother, likewise, creates a wall of protection for her children. She does so using 10 bricks, all beginning with the letter "P," and thus, easily remembered --- in other words, a Nehemiah mother uses: perception, pondering, passion, prayer, patience, preparation, purpose, planning, problem-solving, and perserverance to protect her child(ren). Different pieces of mortar make-up each building block of the wall, and include such things as alertness, availability, attentiveness, self-control, selflessness, love, initiative, tolerance, discipline, integrity, boldness, trustworthiness, determination, wisdom, discernment, persuasiveness, faith, courage, generosity, and determination. The passionate mother will have all of these qualities.
However, even the author recognizes that not all mothers demonstrate these skills at all times, and she includes "confessions" throughout the book on ways that she, too, falls short of precisely what she is advocating, making her seem more human and connected to the result of us.
Merrill also does a tremendous job of explaining the mother's task of opening and closing gates to the wall at different times --- these gates are the ways in which our children interact with the world around them, mostly via technology, but the author gives examples of events ranging from dating to going to college. A mother has to be careful to open each gate and close each gate, as necessary, in order to protect her child.
Merrill is an experienced mother, and her experience shows when she uses examples from her own life to demonstrate key concepts. The book flows nicely, and will be good to have on hand to read again and again as my child gets older, and I consider opening gates in the wall.
If you take nothing else from this review, please understand that while told in the form of an analogy, this is a parenting book for everyone who wants to be the best parent he/she is capable of being. The traits of The Passionate Mom are traits that any mom (or dad) should aspire to, regardless of religious/non-religious affiliation. Above all, The Passionate Mom, of whom Merrill writes, is a good person, possessing a strong character and high moral values. I know I would be happy if I raised my son to possess similar traits and characteristics.

Are you a parent? Are you expecting? Read this book. Then next year, read it again. This book echoes my hope for my children & reassures me that I’m not alone. We are constantly questionning ourselves as moms whether it be our style of raising a child, discipline techniques, or our relationship with each child. This book does an amazing job of touching on so many aspects of parenting and then giving real life examples. You will find yourself shaking your head yes or saying “exactly” chapter after chapter.
The author has 5 children of her own, drawing the reader in providing first hand accounts of her experiences. You’ll learn about building your own “wall” for your children. The first brick described is perhaps the most important and a true testament to Susan’s abilities as a mom. Brick #1 is Perception, “A passionate mom must perceive what is happening in her child’s world”. As you read thru the remaining 7 “bricks” you will be captivated with how you relate to each. Regardless of the age of your child or children, you will be able to relate to the content in this book. I will be purchasing this book for my closest girlfriends and I’m hopeful they will pass the book on to other great moms.

The Passionate Mom is a book all moms should read. It provides a clear, organized plan for any mom who cares and loves their kids as much as God Himself cares and loves us. The reader is taken through the book of Nehemiah from the Old Testament of the Bible. Due to a variety of circumstances, Nehemiah took charge of rebuilding the wall surrounding the city of Jerusalem. Using the rebuilding of the wall as a guide, Susan describes how to build a wall around your family for both protection and provision. Each chapter of the book describes a brick that should be part of every passionate mom's wall and the various traits needed that act as the mortar to keep the wall from crumbling. The 10 bricks needed are: perception, pondering, passion, prayer, patience, preparation, purpose, planning, problem solving and perseverance. Interspersed between the brick chapters are an interlude on building your wall and one on opening gates in your wall, since as your kids grow, they will need to leave and begin to make their own choices and decisions.
I loved reading this book. The image of building a wall for my family was very easy to picture and allowed me to keep that image in mind as I read. Susan used plenty of examples to describe the different bricks from Nehemiah's live, as well as her own life. By asking questions and having spots where thinking of my own answers was necessary, I was able to think about how to put the bricks of my wall into place. I look forward to placing the bricks into mortar around my family and doing the best I can, to be the best mom I can be.
I received a copy of this book from the author for my honest opinion. All thoughts are my own.

As any parent, I question my parenting. "Am I doing the right thing?" "How do I know what the right thing is?" "What do I do next?" I find it particularly difficult as a single mother, because there are times when I have no one to bounce ideas and problems off of. The Passionate Mom: Dare to Parent in Today's World lays down steps on how to parent based off one of the books of the bible, Nehemiah. This book helped me in several ways: It helped me to see that I need to involve God more in my parenting. It encouraged me to delve into my bible more and learn about a book of the bible that I had never given much time or thought to. And it led me me grow more confident in my parenting plan. This is a great new tool for my Mom Toolbox!

I have a stack of "helpful" books that I want to read, someday. This book falls into the "helpful" category. However, I am glad I picked it to read TODAY! Moms, be encouraged! Susan Merrill offers hope, support, and practical, realistic advice for parents AND fills this book with enough interesting personal stories to keep you reading. Susan has the experience of a veteran mom and the heart and humor to share it. I love getting the iMOM "Espresso Minute" emails and through these I was introduced to Susan. When I heard that she wrote a whole book, I knew it was a must-read. Pick up this book and don't put it down until you finish it! Moms, take heart! It can be done!

So much practical, yet incredibly insightful information, packed into this book. I love the way the author shares her own parenting stories and even her "confessions." She's transparent about parenting her five children (two adopted at an older age) who have a range of temperaments. She does not pretend to be the perfect mom - but she provides all of us moms with a vision for parenting our children. She believes that a passionate mom can parent well AND with confidence; and her book provides a plan.
"A passionate mom has a plan for parenting her children from birth to adulthood." Although that may sound daunting, Merrill's approach is not. As I stated earlier, the book is insightful and inspiring, yet practical.
I would highly recommend this book for moms with children of any age.

Here's the down and dirty of being a mom - at least of a busy preschooler, like I am: When you have time to read a self-challenging book you want "Just the facts, Jack!" Susan Merrill delivers her message in just this way! With just the right number of personal stories and professional quotes, Merrill give us practical ways to use the lessons taught through the story of Nehemiah in our everyday life. In a way that is easy to read during our everyday life! Don't get me wrong, this is not a watered down instruction manual for Moms! This is a call to all mothers that WE are the ones that our children need to guide them into adulthood. It is our duty to be vigilant and equip them to be the best people that they can be! The Passionate Mom: Dare to Parent in Today's World is laid out into 10 "P's", the steps we need to go through over and and over again while parenting our children. This writing style makes it easy to read and follow even with many interruptions! In closing, I HIGHLY recommend this book to mothers of ANY age! It's never to late to give your children the advantages of active parenting!

As a mom of two active boys, each day seems to bring new twists and turns, new challenges, and new joys leaving me to wonder each night... am I doing this right? Am I doing enough? Am I giving my kids what they need to be happy, healthy, successful adults someday? There are a million articles, books, and websites but like Goldilocks it often seems hard to find one that is "just right"... some seem too stuffy... some not academic enough... but Susan Merrill's book The Passionate Mom seemed to fit "just right!" Reading Susan's book felt like talking to a trusted friend! Her book provides honest and heartfelt insight and stories that are easy to identify with as a parent combined with a solid plan for tackling parenting issues in today's world by following the 10 P's of passionate parenting. The Passionate Mom is a refreshing approach to the typical parenting book and a great read for parents with children of all ages!

As kids, we've all played that game where someone tells us not to think of a word and then we can't get the Word out of our mind, which is the whole point of the game. I finished reading TPM and, in relation to the unending supply of "How To" parenting books of this age, I'd give TPM three stars. There were so many dark corners of parenting that this book never went to. How "dare" it be titled "Dare to Parent in Today's World"?! I was "pondering" exactly this, before realizing I had been instructed by the author to "ponder"!..
The love of a good treasure hunt, which I acquired in the process of raising three boys, sprang into action and I "pondered" also reading the book of Nehemiah. I must confess that I didn't even know where Nehemiah was in the Bible, and if it were very long I might still turn back. Once there, I read it. I was surprised to discover just how relevant so many of the messages were to things going on today in my own family (and I would suspect every family). However, families are like snowflakes; no two are alike. So, Merrill could have continued to write volumes about the book of Nehemiah and not spoken to my heart in the same way reading those few pages for myself did.
In TPM I've discovered a new key to life. I may hear a message, I may repeat a message, but the real blessing comes from doing! "Pondering" both TPM and the book of Nehemiah held a multitude of revelations. I learned that Nehemiah was a man of prayer...and he had a favorite... "remember me, Lord!". It wasn't because he was afraid God would forget. Every time we ask God to remember us, we are doing something even more important- we are remembering Him! Our lives will change as we learn to remember Him through each day and in every circumstance we face (Hope For Today Today Bible NLT). In the end, the three real stars in the ultimate review make up the Trinity and I suspect Merrill won't mind at all if, in the words of Toby Mac, He were to "Steal My Show...take it away...watch Him go!"

"Every mom needs a plan, a long-term I've only-got-eighteen-years-with-this-child plan," from The Passionate MOM by Susan Merril.
For the life of me & my children, I don't remember getting home from the hospital with my copy of the plan. Just like I don't remember much of anything after the birth of my first born. Fast forward seven years and my baby is living a life full of activity, school, softball, dance, church, AWANA. I don't remember every step of the journey but, I know I did not get my "plan" book.
Luckily, I have a mom support team...of sorts. My go-to gals for parenting tips and advice. Susan Merril is the founder of iMOM.com and one super star mom that leaves me feeling like I am an All-Star Mom! Thanks to her new book, "The Passionate MOM," I am finally seeing what my role is in guiding my child to a favored life among men and God. There should be an end goal. Taken from the Passionate Mom, "It takes great courage to face the unknown, and there are many unknowns in parenting." Susan is full of wise parenting advice and her brand new book will be a must read for all moms.
The Passionate MOM addresses many questions all of us moms have: What do I want for my child? What is my goal? How do I parent in today's world? How can I give my child a secure future?...etc. These huge questions have hit me like a bomb when I read this book. Yes, sure, I have goals but, typically they fall into the category of getting through the next hour, activity or through this night until my kids fall asleep. I want them to go to school make friends, make the team, and get into the right college but, I never knew I could have a real purposeful plan for my girls.
I just had to share her book trailer with you, The Passionate Mom.
Thanks to Susan's book The Passionate Mom I now have a plan and a new way to gauge if it is working for my kids. Through her 10 chapter book she takes you step by step through cultivating the 10 P's and how they fit together to accomplish your goal of being the best mom you can be.
Best book on parenting with a plan for the future, very thoughtful!!
