FaithWords Broken Wings

Format: eBook

Onstage, the singing duo of Gabe and Mitzi Steiner captured America's heart for more than two decades. Offstage, their own hearts have throbbed as one for sixty years. Only now, Gabe has retreated into the tangles of Alzheimer's, leaving Mitzi to ponder her future alone.

On the other side of Tulsa, everyone believes Brooke Woodson has found the perfect man--a handsome lawyer with sights on becoming Tulsa's next District Attorney. If only Brooke felt more sure. If only her fianci could control his anger. If only love didn't come with so many scars.

When an accident lands Brooke in the hospital where Mitzi volunteers, the two women quickly develop an unlikely friendship birthed by providence and bathed in grace. And with Mitzi's help, kindness, and insight, Brooke learns how to pick up the broken pieces of her life.

The story of Gabe and Mitzi Steiner and the battle with Alheimer's touched me. See my Mom had Alhemizers for three years. It was hard living away and trying to some how let her know I was thinking of her. I lost my Mom three years ago. The last memories God gave with me remain with me always.
Along side their story is Brooke Woodson's story. A story of abuse in a relationship. The cover up of broken bones, bruises, etc. are so real. Good thing she never married him. But still women endure this more than the world wants to admit.
Mitzi helps Brooke find her way out of abuse. God put Mitzi in Brooke's life.
A story of friendship and reaching out to someone in need.
It's amazing how Carla intertwined Alzheimer's and abuse together into one story. But then life overlaps in many areas.
Mitzi had a rocky youth and knew about abuse.
Both Mitzi and Brooke are like a bird with a broken wing. They learn to fly again. I liked how Carla brought that into story.

I had no idea what this book was about when I picked it up, but I was pulled into the story through the opening scene, and once I got started I wanted to keep reading through to the end. Having worked with many women involved in domestic violence over the years, I can attest to how believably written the characters were in this novel. A lot of the details reminded me of former situations I'd seen with DV victims. Add to that the precious story line about the husband with Alzheimer's and it became a beautiful love story on one end, and a redemption story on the other.
Mitzi was a precious friend and mentor as she stuck by Brooke and provided just enough support to inspire her to get out of the dangerous situation. It didn't surprise me that people didn't believe her at first, because abusive men work hard on convincing outsiders that they would never hurt the person they loved. The fact that Lance's father abused his mother and the father abused him as well is all too common of a theme in DV cases. I used to tell young girls that I worked with never to marry a man who hates his mother. That's the perfect recipe for abuse right there. And unless the man gets therapy, it's just a matter of time before the ugliness is unleashed. And God bless Drew who saw the beauty in Brooke and believed in her spirit. He was a true hero indeed.
I really enjoyed this book and can see it being used as a tool to help people understand the cycle of violence and the way victims see things in a distorted way until they get help. Broken Wings is a great story and very well written. I found it realistically inspiring and not depressing despite the subject matter. I highly recommend it.

Do you hunger for a story that's relevant yet entertaining? Heart-rending yet heart-warming? DO NOT miss "Broken Wings," Carla Stewart's second release. Building on the strong voice and lyrical prose of her debut award-winner, "Chasing Lilacs," Stewart frames the story of a young attorney, Brooke Woodson, with that of former singing sensation Mitzi Steiner. What's the thread that entwines two dramatically different women?
Domestic violence. A will to survive. A love that transcends life's realities, like achy bones. Like Alzheimer's. Like a possible murder.
Though Stewart doesn't tippytoe around the broken bones, bruised countenances, and battered spirits that domestic violence leaves in its wake, she offers hope, healing, and joy that trumps circumstances. You'll root for these characters, then close the book and say, "Aha."
Did I mention that "Broken Wings" gifts you a love story for the ages? A blossoming romance for one who'd discarded any such notion?

This is my first Carla Stewart book and I LOVED it.
It's beautiful to read how Mitzi started a new life so many years ago. Now it's Brooke's turn to make a new start. Only she has to get rid of her abusive fiancée. Lance is full of anger, but I sensed a lot of love throughout the whole story.
This book is a must read.

Mitzi came from a dysfunctional family and rose to a singing sensation with her husband Gabe. Brooke a paralegal starts to discover what anger can take the shape of when it consumes her fiance Lance. Mitzi and Brooke meet at the hospital where Mitzi volunteers. Two different women from two different age brackets become close as they discover the likeness they share, and in the ways they can both help one another. This is an unforgettable novel one that I finished quickly because of my inability to put it down. I loved the way the author brought Mitzi's history into the story line and also what the implications of anger can do to relationships. A must read novel that hooked me into the storyline with the first chapter. Will definitely be getting Chasing Lilacs by the same author! Thanks to Faithwords for providing this ARC copy for me for my review.
