Questar Video Kayla

The entire family will cheer this heartwarming story of friendship, family, and loyalty. Sam, a young boy, feels out of place in his new town, new home, and new school. Though his mother has remarried, Sam is devoted to the memory of his father, a famous explorer, who disappeared eight years ago. He resists his stepfather's patient efforts to become a family, and finds it difficult to make new friends. Sam gets a new lease on life when he meets a wild dog, who resembles his father's former sled dog, Kayla. Despite the townspeople's hostility toward the wild animal, Sam forms an inseparable bond with Kayla and is determined to enter the local sled dog race. Beautifully photograph in the Canadian wilderness, this uplifting feature is based on award-winning author Elizabeth Van Steenwyk's book, Three Dog Winter. Approx. 90 minutes.

Bonus Features:
  • Kayla's Quebec in the 1920s
  • About the Author, Elizabeth Van Steenwyk
  • Thoughts to be Shared
  • Stereo Sound & Scene Index

I found it hard to follow the storyline, as I couldn't understand all the conversation. I'm hard of hearing so appreciate those DVD's that have the words on the screen. My 8 and 10 yr old sons enjoyed it of course, but i didn't really appreciate the example of the backtalking and "I hate YOu", that the young boy gave to his parents. My younger daughters won't be watching it due to the guns and attempted dog murdering that goes on.

Good for older kids, but it's too intense for the younger ones. Shows a man killing a poisoned dog with a shovel. ( Only shows the raising and lowering of the shovel above the man's shoulders). Also shows an injured, bleeding dog that was shot. ( The dog doesn't die, but it looks like he might.) I bought it for my 5 year old niece, but didn't give it to her after I watched it myself. I wish the previous reviewer had mentioned these parts of the movie - I wouldn't have bought it for a 5 year old.

It's true---this is a heartwarming story of a boy coming to terms w/ his father's death...but it does have 3 bad words in the movie. As a church librarian, I was disappointed in that.
