Orbis Books Bread and Wine: Readings for Lent and Easter

Six separate sections (Invitation, Temptation, Passion, Crucifixion, Resurrection and New Life) guide readers through the essential elements of spiritual preparation and feature writings from some of Christendom's most celebrated masters. Classic thinkers such as Martin Luther and John Donne share space with 20th-century theologians like C.S. Lewis, G.K. Chesterton and Dorothy Day. There is also a generous sampling from contemporary writers, including Philip Yancey, John Updike, Frederick Buechner, Madeleine L'Engle, Henri Nouwen and Brennan Manning.

I was looking for a book of readings to supplement my Lenten readings . This book contains a wide variety of readings written by different authors. I find this a good addition to my daily devotionals.

Bread and Wine has provoked thought and discussion far beyond its short daily messages. I appreciate the fact that I can read a lesson in a few minutes and mull it over for days. This is not just a book for Lent, but encouraged thinking through many important issues concerning the life and work of our Lord. I strongly recommend this book and plan to buy the advent book published by Orbis as well.

These readings and the readings in the Advent companion are both amazingly wide in breadth and yet at the same time challenging in depth. I highly recommend this book and its companion "Watch for the Light." as regular readings each season they roll around. From one year to the next, I have found that my own faith is challenged and renewed in different ways; as I come to a given reading in a different year, I find myself at a new place, and the insights are valuable.

I recommend this compilation/lenten devotional. It contain numerous, profound statements of faith by a very diverse range of authors.I have read this volume over two Lenten seasons and been blessed. It has also introduced me to several writers I would not have encountered otherwise. "All thing work to the good for those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose."
