Hendrickson Publishers 1 Corinthians

To the Corinthian Christians, Paul dispatched an urgent, emotion-laden letter in response to troubling reports from the flourishing young church. Writing to help them live out their faith in one of the largest and most notorious cities in the ancient world, Paul dealt with difficult questions regarding the physical body, social status, disagreement and disorder in church services, and Christian behavior in the midst of an intensely pagan environment. His forceful words of confrontation, correction, reconciliation, and blessing apply equally to believers in the prosperity and distraction of society today.

The Daily Bible Commentary series distills the best of current scholarship into the straightforward language of a daily two-page devotional.

I was diligently and prayerfully working my way through this commentary, loving the dailiness of it. I especially appreciated the author's insights on the crucifixion. But soon I was distressed over the author's condemning attitude towards Paul, accusing him of prideful behavior that "lashed out in brutally dismissive mockery", saying Paul's attitude was unhelpful, unchristian, and that he had gone too far in ridiculing the Corinthians who "did not deserve the treatment they got at the hands of Paul". Even though the accusatory tone towards Paul continued, I kept struggling through the book, that is until I hit Chapter 15. There the author makes "an intelligent correction" of the scripture. I threw the book in the garbage at that point. If we manipulate God's word and make it say what we think is intelligent, the doctrine of Biblical inerrancy goes out the window. If one text is suspect, then what about another that we don't agree with? Before you know it, we've downgraded the inspired Word of God to nothing more than a good book. Along with it the Gospel is fumbled. We must never misconstrue the cross of Christ. It is a testimony to the beauty of our worth and and the ugliness of our sin.

Some commentaries overwhelm you with quotes from other commentators and references to Hebrew and Greek (and sometimes German!) words that really don't help to grasp the meaning of the text. The Daily Bible Commentary series gives enough background information and word commentary to bring understanding of what the text meant, and then with gentle application, it helps draw out what the text means for today, without being heavy handed about it. I use them for sermon preparation, but I have found that they are divided into daily sections, thus enabling these commentaries to be used in everyday devotions alongside of your Bible. Each Scripture entry/commentary is about two pages in length. Right now CBD has the entire set of NT volumes for $2.99 or less each. A great deal on a great set!

Fr. Murphy O'Connor teaches 1 Corinthians in Jerusalem and I had the opportunity to attend his wonderful course.Although I do not agree with all his conclusions (only the vast majority), this book is a precious help for whoever wishes to study Paul's writings and pray with them.About 1 Cor 13:4-7 JMOC's conclusive prayer is "Lord, let my love be true."This is a great book also it is not expensive.
