Hendrickson Publishers The Babylonian Talmud: A Translation and Commentary, 22 Volumes

Regarded by scholars as the primary document of rabbinic Judaism, The Babylonian Talmud is now available in an affordable 22-volume English edition.

The Hebrew Scriptures contain many hundreds of laws both religious and civil. They concern the Temple (in Exodus), the priesthood (in Leviticus), the Temple offerings and other rites (in Numbers), and the social order of Israel (in Deuteronomy). These may rightly be called the written law (Torah).

The oral law (or Mishnah) is the extension of these precepts to cover all of life and its contingencies and was written down by rabbinic sages about 200 C.E. With the Talmud, Jewish sages systematized the laws in Scripture together with those of the oral tradition. While the Mishnah records rules governing the conduct of the holy life of Israel, the Talmud concerns itself with the details of the Mishnah. Israel's oral law found its definitive expression in the Talmud.

The Talmud of Babylonia (a.k.a., the Bavli, or Babylonian Talmud), is a sustained commentary on the written and oral law of Israel. Compiled between 500-600 C.E., it offers a magnificent record of how Jewish scholars preserved a humane and enduring civilization. Representing the primary document of rabbinic Judaism, it throws considerable light on the New Testament as well.

This monumental American translation was completed a decade ago - but was extraordinarily expensive and difficult to find - and features translations by Jacob Neusner, Tzvee Zahavy, Alan Avery-Peck, B. Barry Levy, Peter Haas, and Martin S. Jaffee, with commentary and new introductions by Jacob Neusner. All 37 tractates are presented in an easy-to-follow analytical format; Mishnah passages are set in bold type; and passages from Aramaic appear in italics.

Here are the problems;
Folio pages difficult to find
Folio pages not marked
Folio Pages incorrectly marked
Folio Pages marked in the wrong place
Chapter headings giving the wrong folio pages in the chapter
Some content missing
The binding is glued not sown.
Here are the positives:
Written in accessible language
Good price
Good service from CDB
Reference to Mishnah and Tosefta is helpful
Clearly these books are seconds and should be advertised as such. The price is right. Hendrickson does not really care about the layout of the folio pages.
I would not recommend these to anybody at all! Only buy this version if you cannot afford the Artcroll or Socinco editions in the book form. Buy the electronic edition of this, I hope that it is better than this paper version.

The Babylonian Talmud is a must for every Jewish home. Christians will find it very useful as well. You will probably never read every volume, but it is a great reference library to the Old Testament. And the price can't be beat.

This is not a bad buy for someone starting to study Talmud. If a christian wants to go toe to toe in rabbinic debate or understand early church and rabbinics this will help, however you might also want to invest in Koren's (Steinsaltz) or Artscroll's Sha (Talmud). Even though Neusner's is good for the beginner, I pray christian books makes a deal with Artscroll or Koren. The commentary to the talmud text is critically worth it to understand to connect between christian and (Orthodox) rabbinic thought.

The product itself is easy to use and understand. It also puts a great many things about The Old Testament, Judaism and why Jews and Christians belief systems are as they are in perspective.

Sometimes Judaism was reduced to studying only the 39 books of the Hebrew Bible or the Christian Old Testament. Those who hold a limited understanding of Judaism must first read the Babylonian Talmud to know how vast like an ocean the Jewish Religion is. This is a great valuable resource for scholars and students of Religion. The English Translation makes it easier for lay people to comprehend this religion, Judaism.

For those who are seekers of the Jewish Culture within the spiritual framework, this set is invaluable. Clearly Jewish circular concepts in logic are present and are directly connected to the expressions that the Apostle Paul refers to. There is a simple on-line reference to exploring the content from the Talmud, knowing how to find it is not that complicated. It is not a series of books that can be read and followed like a book with sequels; it is however giving the concepts as to why various questions can apply to an in depth search for our spiritual focus. Book one is the key; however a phonetic understanding of the differences between Ashkenaz and Sephardic is helpful in cross-referencing the online aids. The page numbers are based on the original text, each page has an a and b side. (1a, 1b, 2a, 2b) rather than page 1,2,3,4 etc.

Although the study of the Talmud in the original language is much much better, for everyone who can't read the Talmud in the original Neusner has done a great job! Hid typical layout makes it an easy read. And for this price ... where are you waiting for?

This item is more than worth it. Any person who wants to to increase their understanding about the Jewish theology/belief and how they view the Old Testament, then this is the most important purchase one can add to their library. It is so full of information and it makes some texts come into a clearer, and sometimes all be it different, light. No person who serious about learning the Bible will do with out this collection. Also, the translation is very easy to read font. Finally, the quality of the craftsmanship for the books is very high. It will last for many years of study and enjoyment.

I was amazed at the price of this set. I own the original set with Hebrew on one page and english on the other. I bought this set because it is all english. It is laid out well and easier to follow if you are not familiar with the original.
I do have a couple of issues. Finding the numbers on the page can be difficult. One volume had some discoloration on the cover. Still worth the money 10 fold.

The Babylonian Talmud is the perfect companion for a Bible scholar, going into minute detail of the laws of every day living of Jewish society. Successive opinions and commentaries were dutifully recorded. An indispensable companion for the one who wants to understand the Jewish society in biblical times.
The volumes are in prime condition, in beautiful hardcover; an asset to a personal library.

Honestly I don't think the CBD had any clue of the treasure they were sitting on and were selling at an incredible sale. At Barnes and Nobles the same set cost around 900 dollars and it was going for 199! My jaw simply dropped and I had to have it. The Talmud is little known to Christians but as a Messianic Jew its value was more clear. The Talmud is a compendium of Jewish thought and culture, as it consist of argumentation between various Rabbis on various topics in the Torah. Back in the day only Rabbis possessed these and now days more devout, scholarly, or wealthy Jews possess them and study them.
As a side note I did notice that on a few of the covers of these volumes there were some strange scuff marks (I'm not talking scratches either but the whole front cover), but pages and everything else seems great.
All in all a good tool for studying Judaism and for your study of Jewish literature as well as understanding the Jewish roots of Christianity by understanding their practices and view points.
