Baronius Press Douay-Rheims and Clementina Vulgata English-Latin Bible

Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ St. Jerome

Many Catholics are once more discovering the richness of the Church’s traditional versions of the Sacred Scriptures.

The Clementine Vulgate was proclaimed the official Latin Bible of the Church after the Reformation. From St. Jerome’s time, through the Middle Ages, until vernacular editions were introduced, educated Catholics throughout the world were familiar with the Vulgate.

Those familiar with the Douay-Rheims Bible will know that it is one of the most beautiful and accurate Bible translations available today—a word for word translation of the Clementine Vulgate.

Having both Bibles side by side allows us to see exactly where the vernacular translation came from. Even those with limited Latin skills will be able to follow along, using the Douay-Rheims translation as an aid. You’ll see how the Douay-Rheims is a literal translation of the classic Vulgate.

It is a beautiful, captivating read. The Biblia Sacra is not difficult to understand and it doesn’t take much study of Latin to be able to get through the texts passably.

Included in this Bible are Challoner’s notes, and the texts found in the appendix to the Vulgate, namely 3 and 4 Esdras and the prayer of Manasses (in Latin with an English translation). This makes the Bible totally comprehensive and ideal for theology students.

Owning one of these beautiful Bibles will give you great pleasure each time you read it, and ensure that your family is familiar with sacred scripture in Latin as well as English.

Hardcover bound in leather with ornate gold blocked cover and spine. Gilded page edges, head and tail bands and two satin ribbons.

The Douay-Rheims Bible is an English translation of the Latin Vulgate Bible, a version universally used in the Church for over 1500 years, itself meticulously translated from the original Hebrew and Greek by St. Jerome (A.D. 340-420).

The text is set in Century Old Style font, size 9pt.

The Bible is exquisite. I have been looking for this for a long time. Having both english and latin side-by-side brings out more meaning to the scriptures for me.

I use the NAB for everyday mass readings, as that is the translation the church uses. I wanted this particular bible because it also contains the Latin, and the English is more lyrical and beautiful. While the NAB is about the most accurate translation available from the original languages, and is great for study or following the mass, the Douay-Rheims and its language is very suitable for meditation and Lectio Divina. The English translation also closely follows the Latin. The one complaint is the paper is a little thin, and when I opened it upon arrival to one of my favorite psalms, there were two small holes at the top of the page. That didin't thrill me a whole lot, but I overlooked it and didn't mention it to the company, as I was pleased with the book itself.

This is a beautifully made book. It is a large book 9 x 11 inches and heavy, best suited for use on a desk or book stand. If you are not used to the Douay-Rheims version some renderings can be a challenge (Booz=Boaz; Noemi=Naomi; Bethsabee=Bathsheba; sicles=shekels &c.). It is very useful having the vulgate side by side with the English in two columns. Books like this are going the way of buggy whips. Get one while you can.

I am taking an on-line Latin course. Using this Bible as a text and a Latin-English dictionary. It is so well made and the print is large enought I don't need my glasses.

A beautiful Bible, however am disappointed in the size and intensity of the print. I cannot read it without a magnifier. A darker print would make it much easier to read.
Do you have a smaller version that is easier to read?

Almost perfect Catholic bible for Latin study. The use of the Douay-Rheims and Clementina Vulgata Latin bibles was & is the perfect combination for a Catholic Latin study bible. CONS: 1 - Type is small, a large type version of this same bible is needed. 2 - Heavier paper is needed in a "Study" bible to allow use of color hi-lighters. The high-lighter ink is visible on both sides of the almost translucent page of this bible, heavily adding to mess & confusion.

I thought this edition was a bit overpriced, and it's kind of big, but it is a good Bible for deep studying. It's arranged like a usual parallel Bible or a bilingual Bible, but it has an old Latin translation on one side with a pretty good English translation on the other side. The text is complied well, and it is easy to read.

Excellent value! Perfect correlation between Latin and English vocabulary and syntax for those of us who would like to read Latin but have not yet grasped all of the fundamentals.
