Once again C.S. Lakin takes us on a magical journey with talking owls and witches from the marsh in the fourth installment of The Gates of Heaven Series. This time the journey takes us to Wentwater, where tradition and superstition rule the every day life. In the mountains above known as The Heights knowledge and wisdom is power.

Justyn the boy from Wentwater who always questioned the superstitions grows into a young man to be educated at the university in The Heights. Determined to turn his back on the foolishness of his family and the others in Wentwater. Teralyn has always lived in The Heights but never felt like she fit in, for deep in her heart is a passion for music.

When Justyn's mentor asked him to take Teralyn to Wentwater for the annual festival he sees an opportunity to endear himself to his mentor. But he is soon consumed with much more than that when Teralyn seems to fall in love with his brother, Fromer. What follows is a classic story of love and the dangers of jealously and bitterness.

The author weaves several life lessons in this tale. I honestly don't think I've figured them all out. Having worked in higher education for over 25 years I see many Justyns. As well, I've seen many Teralyns who have captured the passion of music and life. I think it's safe to say we need to land somewhere in between.

Like the other books in the series it is appropriate for any age. If you enjoy escaping into another world that is beautifully painted with allegories this is an excellent choice. Although the fourth book in the series you do not need to read the books in any particular order. Having read the others there are locations and characters mentioned in each book from the other books.

Disclaimer: I would like to thank the author for the opportunity to read this book and was under no obligation other than to give my honest opinion.

Everyone who loves to enter imaginary worlds is invited to read The Unraveling of Wentwater, a fairy tale by C.S. Lakin. Lakin creates a land where villagers slavishly follow superstition to avoid bad fortune, and people living in the Heights are scholars who are devoted to learning. Yet both groups are missing a third possibility, the belief in what The Book says. A curse is made by the witch Ursell, causing havoc in the village as it unravels and disappears, word by word. Teralyn, raised in the Heights yet drawn to the village, must spend seven painful and isolated years weaving words and what they represent back in to existence. Two brothers vie for Teralynn's affection, and one proves treacherous. This fairy tale is a grand story romp, with love, betrayal, and witchcraft holding the reader's attention and Scripture from The Great Book pointing the way forward.

The Unraveling of Wentwater is the 4th book in the Gates of Heaven Series written by C.S. Lakin. In this fourth installment of the Gates of Heaven fantasy series readers will learn of the fourth of seven sacred sites heaven set up on earth to prevent evil from gaining a stronghold over the hearts of men. Inspired by the traditional fairy tale "Sleeping Beauty," readers will be taken on a journey that will leave them speechless.

Lakin takes you on a magical journey that explores love, jealousy, mercy, and judgment. She spins a tale about the power and magic of words, and as the marsh witch, who keeps words in a jar, warns, "Be careful with your words - they have consequences!" Secrets and superstitions abound in the kingdom, but only a water creature, who lives at the bottom of the lake and guards the sacred site knows the truth and can help Teralyn restore all...

Teralyn, the babe born in Wentwater, is the one who will unravel Wentwater. On her naming day, the marsh witch appeared unexpectedly and placed a curse on her. The villagers banished the parents out of the village and set the cottage to burn with Teralyn in it.

The villagers of Wentwater are extremely superstitious. Sweeping away the footprints of chicken feet, a loose button will cause untold trouble if it comes off the garment, stopping in a doorway and spinning around so the shadows don't hold evil.... Every bit of their lives, thoughts and relationships are tied to superstitions.

Then there are those who live in the Heights of Wentwater. Nary a superstitious thought among them. They are scholars, thinkers, seekers after knowledge and wisdom, until they have reduced their world into a logical, intellectual world that has only room for their words. Forget magic and wonder, there is no place for that.

Justyn is one of those who lives in the Heights. He used to be a villager, in fact, he was there when the tragedy of Teralyn happened. His brother, Fromer, still lives in the village. Only Justyn has no use for his brother, thinking he is above him and all of those who live in the village.

Teralyn, who has lived in the Heights for all of her life, or so she believes, goes down to the village for a music fest and from that point on things begin to happen.

C.S. Lakin has written another wonderful book. Focusing this tale on words and their importance, she unravels the two extremes of Wentwater. Then revealing the necessity of both logic and superstition, intellect and emotions, she weaves together two communities that need each other with the greatest word of all.

I can't wait to read this book again. I highly recommend The Unraveling of Wentwater to anyone who enjoys an extremely well-written fantasy.
