Thomas Nelson Squanto and the Miracle of Thanksgiving

This entertaining and historical story shows that the actual hero of the first Thanksgiving was neither white nor Indian, but God. In 1608, English traders came to Massachusetts and captured a 12-year-old Indian, Squanto, and sold him into slavery. He was raised by Christians and taught faith in God. Ten years later he was sent home to America. Upon arrival, he learned an epidemic had wiped out his entire village. But God had plans for Squanto. God delivered a Thanksgiving miracle: An English-speaking Indian living in the exact place where the Pilgrims land in a strange new world. Recommended for ages 5 to 10.

This book shares the story of Squanto, more than just his interaction with the Pilgrims, but his kidnapping, transportation to Spain, living with the monks, living in England, and then back to America.

We read this book over and over, and my daughter even took it to school and asked her teacher to read it, which she did! They had viewed a film on the story of Squanto so the book went right along with what they were learning. We love the book and will read it every year at Thanksgiving!

Bought this for my 4 year old son who has been into American Indian culture lately and he really enjoyed this book. I even learned some facts that I didn't know before.

This was a delightful book that my children and I adore. It truly gives a heart warming version of the life of Squanto and the miraculous way the Lord used him to help the Pilgrims.

Very good for 8 yrs. old and up, as is. I retold the story for my preschoolers. The comparison to Joseph was striking.

A great way to teach your children about America's holiday of Thanksgiving and God's original plan of unity amongst diversity. In many ways the story of the Indian Squanto mirrors that of Joseph in the Old Testament. Sold into slavery and trying to get back home, Squanto is taught the King's English and is introduced to Christianity. Through tragedy and triumph God uses his life to help spare others. A testimony to what one life can do to touch others and that unity among different ethnic backgrounds is possible and part of God's plan.
