No biblical commentator does a better job of compiling and comparing the four Gospel accounts than does John MacArthur. Deep and yet clearly understandable, "The Murder of Jesus" graphically describes the final days of our Savior. From the beginnings of the plot by the Jewish religious leaders to do away with Him until He breathed His last on the Cross, the author deals with all of the passion narratives in a harmonious manner. In addition, he discusses the Old Testament prophecies and the predictive words of Jesus Himself in anticipation of the death He would die. The background material that MacArthur includes sheds helpful light on many things that the Scriptures only mention in passing. The one who reads with an eye to detail only wishes that he had better annotated his sources. Whereas lesser writers tend to either slavishly quote the biblical text without explanation or offer interpretations that are without foundation, MacArthur's style is biblically expository and colorful. The section on Jesus' final sayings from the Cross is both devotional and instructive. I have personally found John MacArthur to be at his best when teaching from the Gospels, which is why I highly recommend this book.

This book is stunning in its presentation and chronology. Dr. MacArthur walks us through the Passover week and Lord Jesus' sacrifice biblically and rationally and the senses are engaged in the unfolding of the Murder Of Jesus (by the will of God) on our behalf. I couldn't put this book down, I was awakened to the depth and the evil human conspiracy , wept through the garden scene, trials and crucifixion, was poignantly amazed at the literal hatred , deception, and unkindness of the Sanhedrin and the Pharisees, and paused at the willing self-deception of the crowds, and whooped! at the Resurrection. This is literal truth not fiction! BUT I was moved often to ponder the sobering facts: "I am the sinner in the story" and "I am the one who NEEDED His loving sacrifice," I am the one He came for" and "I am SO grateful He did!" A wonderful read during Christmas to keep us believers mindful of the entire wonderful plan of God. I was born-again over three decades ago, but The Story of what it costs Him to redeem me never gets old. Dr. MacArthur has once again written to capture the heart and the mind of believing reader (and prayerfully, the unbeliever). Truly, Jesus Is Worthy!

Dr. MacArthur brings together, the events surrounding, the last hours of Jesus before His crucifixion. He makes the account come alive. It is almost like being there and witnessing the events, as they unfold. This is a must read book.

This is an amazing book! I have actually owned it for years. I bought this copy for a new brother who recently received Christ after being an avowed atheist. MacArthur really opens up not only the mission of Christ, but the agony and scheming of all those around him. MacArthur takes the power texts of the Gospels and transforms them into a mystery novel/teaching guide of the last week of Christ's earthly ministry. I would recommend this book to every Christian and non-Christian, no matter where they are spiritually.
