The World of Capt. John Smith is an excellent book to get children and adults interested in American and World history during Capt. John Smith's life time. Ms. Foster had a gift for making history come alive in an interesting narrative way. I highly recommend these books and the Beautiful Feet study guides to go with them.

This is an excellent book for older children and adults. It helps to understand the time clearly and it was fascinating to learn that so much had happened to Captain Smith.

I haven't finished this book but I've been greatly disappointed in it even though I'd hoped it would be better than Augustus Caesar's World, by the same author. I will put some of my review from that book here because this book (The World of Capt. John Smith) is what further prompted me to write the other review.

I purchased this book because of seeing it in the CBD homeschool catalog.

My advice to all is to look elsewhere for an historical retelling of events and times, because although the telling is interesting, the authoress definitely propagated the idea that all religions lead to the same end and she uses what knowledge she has to do a survey of some religions of the time period to demonstrate this doctrine. This is directly contradictory to what Christ states when he says that he is the way, the truth and the life and that no man cometh to the Father but by Him. I detest books that call the Truth, a liar, and I imagine that others also would be disappointed. Consequently, I do not find this a trustworthy account of historical events and I can't be sure if that was the intention of the author anyway. :-(

As a small side note, I've never read any other histories than this one that treats a ruthless woman like Catherine De Medici like a poor old woman trying to keep peace between Catholics and Protestants.
