I was excited to see “The Power Based Life” by Mike Flynt on the list of books available receive and review from Booksneeze. I remember reading the story of his return to college in his fifties to play football. Mike’s strategies for developing a “power based life” center upon a personal relationship with Christ. He draws from his own experiences and also utilizes the stories of others to show how building upon your strengths gives a life of fulfillment and satisfaction.
Obviously this book is based on a Christ centered relationship and Mike tells of his efforts before Christ and afterwards. However, the book offers practical advice that could prove helpful to anyone, whether they are a Christian or not. That said, he emphasizes discovering who God has created us to be.
This book can be read in a short time and provides valuable strategies and insights.

Mike Flynt helped me realize that one really needs to have a strong-will to be able to get through life's many difficulties. He let me realize why and how events could have happened in my life by letting me associate with his own experiences. Although it was quite hard for me to associate with his experiences in sports, he helped me realize that some aspects of life should have their own point of view. Good vibes, trust in God and a fighting force - things I've finally come to understand, all thanks to this book.

According to Christianbook.net, the Power-Based Life is
"Strength training coach Mike Flynt offers his twelve life strategies that readers can use to strengthen their bodies, minds, and spirits as they become the people God created-and then find the work they were designed to do. These strategies or power bases illustrate principles that enable us to meet challenges and face each day’s pressures with confidence. They include:
Playing to your strengths
Mastering the essentials
Cultivating a winning attitude
Defying the skeptics
Knowing who you play for
Practicing radical mercy
Sowing in health to reap a longer life
The Power-Based Life is filled with stories of football, business, and family experiences from Mike’s life and others. Each principle, based on a biblical truth, offers a "power-up" for the journey. Join Coach Flynt to discover and then realize your own life’s dreams and goals."
I completely agree with this assesment of the book. Flint's book analyzes experiences that most of us have as young men and allows us to see how each of those experiences prepares us to become who God intends us to be. Flint does, however, fall a bit short on the analysis end. It's not quite "academic" enough for me. I'm not quite sure what it is, but it reads like a textbook to middle schoolers.
Overall, it was a pleasant read with decent messages and an easy to follow form.

I enjoy reading self-improvement books so looked forward to reading this book by Mike Flynt. In his senior year at college, Flynt was expelled for fighting and never got to complete his football career. At the age of 59, he returned to that same college and played his final year of football.
The Power-Based Life was developed out of Mike's desire to help others discover how to become the person God planned for them to be. He encourages his readers to find their talents and figure out how to make money at it. He stresses the need for positive self talk, including memorizing of Scripture. He says, "If you can dream it you can achieve it" and encourages the reader to visualize a positive outcome. He points out the need to be a team player, and reminds us that as members of the church we are members of one another.
His final chapters teach on how to deal with adversity, the importance of cutting others slack, and how to make the most out of your life, as you don't know how much time you have left.
The chapter I enjoyed the most was the one entitled, "Visualization: See What Can Be." Mike presents this chapter well and has some good illustrations. Unfortunately, I found this book overall to be disappointing. I think men—especially sportsmen—would probably get more out of it than I did.

I was recently able to read The Power-Based Life: Realize Your Life's Goals and Dreams by Strengthening Your Body,Mind, and Spirit. by Mike Flynt. Mike Flynt is not someone I would have initially thought to read but I was pleasantly surprised. Mike Flynt uses this book to try to help other people begin to be able to realize and live their life's goal. With chapter headings like, "Know who you are playing for" or "Raise Your Banner", it's easy to follow and it's easy to understand. While the book is supposed to be about finding your dream job or career, I felt that I could apply many of the concepts and ideas to just being a better person. The person that I want to be. I love the way that Mike is able to use biblical stories and scriptures to illustrate his point and the way that he is able to show someone how to incorporate them into their own 'mantras'. This book was easy to read and yet the topics that were being discussed were not sugar coated. I would recommend that everyone read this book; don't let the tagline discourage you. It is easily applied to any and all walks of life. Enjoy!!!

Mike Flynt is a former college football player. He was kicked out of college after too many fights, and he later returned to play out his senior year at the age of 59 (becoming the oldest person to do so in NCAA history.) He committed his life to Christ, and to helping others realize their own personal dreams and goals, no matter what they may be. This book is a realization of his desire to help others by showing them how to tap into their own "power base," and live the life that they were called by God to live.
At its heart, The Power Based Life is one big pep talk, and a good one at that. Flynt uses numerous personal stories, sports stories, biblical references, and other illustrations (I'm still thinking about his little story about Sylvester Stallone) to take the reader through twelve different steps to both figure out what you were called to do, and to do it. His advice is both practical and inspirational, and it will have you fired up and excited to go out and chase your dreams.
When I first starting reading this book, I was excited about the message, but not quite as excited about his style of writing. As I got into it however, the writing didn't matter anymore, because his enthusiasm and passion rose above it. I finished it in a matter of days.
I truly loved this book, and gained much from its pages. It's a book I would recommend to anyone struggling with "finding" themselves, and it's a book that I will read again.

This book, not a simple weekend read I will warn you, is written by a former football player turned salesman. He lays out in 12 steps how to harness your power base, and turn your wishes into goals and eventually into realities in your life. Using Biblical principals and the fundamentals of hard work he will challenge you to overcome your fears, re-focus your drive and inspire you to climb out of the box you currently are dwelling in. You will not see your world the same.

If you want to have a “Power-Based” life, you are going to have to refine your focus. In The Power-Based Life by Mike Flynt, he walks the reader through his life experience in discovering his Power Base. If you are looking for an easy step-by-step process, this book is not for you. The Power-Based Life requires delayed gratification, self-discipline, hard work, and humility. You must be coachable and apply the basic fundamentals of the playbook… and you can be successful in nearly anything. What playbook you ask? Mike Flynt explains the playbook and its significance to the power-based life. The history, the heritage, and the wisdom written by the greatest coach ever. We must fight the temptation to allow “life’s luxuries to water down our resolve to achieve something special.” We must realize “no failure is final; nothing is ever wasted.” We need to “invest in suffering” so that we can “receive dividends of our new strength and better understanding.” The power-based life is all about “the intensity of your focus…knowing exactly what is essential and what isn’t…prioritizing the essential things…and dropping the nonessentials to the bottom of the list.”

In a nutshell, The Power Based Life is a book that is to inspire the reader to figure out what God has purposed for him to be and press on to work on his gifting to reach goals. What I love most about this book are the biblical truths and references that you cannot miss that are backed up with in Flynt’s claims. It is one thing to be encouraged work towards a goal. It is another altogether when we know what we are pursuing is God-inspired.

The Power Based Life by Mike Flynt, definitely not your normal self-encouragement/ self-help book. It's ALOT more than that. - A greatly inspirational, greatly rewarding book-
The book beautifully uses bible examples and verses with some real life experiences concerning the author himself as well as famous figures to demonstrate its teachings; that strengthen the power of words by at least ten-fold? (Not to exaggerate but I believe I really underestimate the amount of extra help it serves than other books) I can't let go of this book the moment it entered my hands, despite exam struggles and project deadlines during this period.
The book's main aim is to strengthen the body, mind and spirit for us to realise our life goals. For me, I think it did more than that. The book made me realise and understand a lot more about myself- what I have been lacking all this while. It provides meaningful guides and instil a deeper meaning into the whole process of reading. It does not just give you a set of habits to follow, to change or to modify. The fact that humans are not perfect are recognised and the author is successful in showing how one can lead a powerful life in the flawed environment of ours. Rather than just focusing on physical matters, the spirit has been taken care of. The author understands well it's not possible to succeed with a flawed and burdened spirit even with great body and health. In fact, the latter is not possible without the first- a healthy spirit.
The book brought me laughters and tears. One very significant point it taught me is that: Circumstances can change our emotions- how we feel, we go up and down the roller coaster of life and experience happiness and sadness. Surely, we could not force ourselves to feel happy when bad or unfortunate things happen. BUT we can still have a joyful soul. Be it sad or happy, the soul is at peace because we have a God above whom we know will be able to solve anything. I learned great lessons about not procrastinating and fantasizing. It all comes through empty promises, imagination cannot become real just by imagining! Praying, meditating on God's words which in turn allow the power of it to be reflected through your life- Now, that's powerful mindset, amazing spirituality and strengthening of body, mind and spirit.
Read the book, you won't regret it. For me, I didn't and I am quite sure it will be a book I will be reading many times over.
To comply with new regulations introduced by the Federal Trade Commission, I must post that Thomas Nelson has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book to review. I also must say that the opinions are all mine

The Power Based Life:
Realize Your Life’s Goals And Dreams By Strengthening Your Body, Mind, And Spirit
By: Mike Flynt
In his book, “The Power Based Life: Realize Your Life’s Goals And Dreams By Strengthening Your Body, Mind, And Spirit”, Mike Flynt helps us to get back to the fundamentals of living a power based life by using power based principles to helps us to realize our life’s goals and dreams. He offers twelve strategies and uses insightful stories, some we may recognize, but tells these stories from a different perspective. In doing this Mike Flynt gets us thinking in a different way. “The Power Based Life: Realize Your Life’s Goals And Dreams By Strengthening Your Body, Mind, And Spirit”, explains what a power base is and how to use it to live a more significant, satisfying, and successful life. Really, is that not what we are all seeking?
I found this book to be easy to read and the thought provoking stories Mike Flynt uses really got me thinking in a different way. I believe that anyone who has asked the question: “Why am I here?” will find reading, “The Power Based Life: Realize Your Life’s Goals And Dreams By Strengthening Your Body, Mind, And Spirit”, very beneficial. The power based principals described in this book have one thing in common other than being key issues of life, work, and interpersonal relationships and that is that they are all supported by biblical truth. In each chapter Mike Flynt shares a scripture from the bible and speaks from the viewpoint as a follower of Jesus Christ. Although you may not have made that choice for your own life, do not be put off from reading this book. We can all benefit from the practical good sense of these power based principles.

I gave this book to friend's son who is in his first year of college. He liked Tony Dungy's and Drew brees books. I thought it would be a nice addition to his library. He enjoyed it. He told me that alot of the insights made he filled him with self esteem. I think youndgmen today are facing heavier challenges then men in the last few decades. They need all the support they can get. I would tell moms to give this book to their teen sons. Also Micheal Other (The Blind Side football player) has a book coming out. When young men see the players that they love having a spiritual side, it connects them to problems in everyday life. I'm glad football players are writing these books. Thanks guys.

I finished my book, "The Power-Based Life," and I loved it! It was very motivating, as well as challenging. It grabbed me and set me in front of my life - forcing me to pay attention to God's will for my life, not how much dough I want to make later on. I like how Mike basically zapped fear from the start of the book - he completely eliminated it - and when I still feel unsure about what I want to do when I get older (I'm still a teen) then I remember Mike's advice, "Fear is often another word for negative visualization." I then think of something positive, and (snap!) am back on track. I also like how Mike helped me to choose what I should be doing for my life.
I really like how Mike puts action into steps, so we know how to take action. In his book, he does this several times. I also enjoyed how he adds scripture to every chapter, so we can see how God truly does want to be the center of our lives, although he did not use the King James Version, which was the only negative thing I have to say about the book. Mike is sure not flamboyant about following God - nor is he at all waved by the world's point of view: to get more money, not use your talents. One of my favorite chapters was chapter nine, "Adversity: Turn Your Difficulties to Your Advantage." This chapter helped me to turn my troubled moments - or sticky moments - to good times and God-moments.

I am not sure what I expected when I agreed to review this book, but I am glad I did. The Power-Based Life by Mike Flynt teaches you to discover sources of energy and happiness in your life...the two things that will give you the strength to accomplish anything you set your mind to. He does this by giving you 12 strategies (he calls these “power bases”- “the center of personal strength used to meet challenges that, once discovered and maximized, will lead to a more significant, satisfying, and successful life.”) such as Cultivate a Winning Attitude and Defy the Skeptics, which are supposed to help you understand your personal strengths. The strategies he offers are both practical and insightful. This book is full of suggestions that will make you reflect on your life, but not in a harsh way. The Power Based Life is definitely a book for someone struggling to figure out who they are, and what their purpose is in life. I am very glad I took the time to read this book, as it has made me take a different approach on the way I look at things and live my life on a daily basis.

I wanted to read this book as a lift off for a new year. I will admit that I had difficulty getting into the book at first. It begins with quite a few stores and examples which revolve around sports. Not being a sports fanatic at all, it was of no interest to me, but I trudged through it. My attention was grabbed in the second chapter with his "Grand Tour" of the Bible. Slowly the light came on about why the stories and examples were important to the book.
God is making some amazing changes in my family's life and the more I read, the more excited I became about these changes. One of the most powerful parts of the book for me was the section where Mr. Flynt gives some practical steps to visualize what "can be" in your life. I highly recommend this book for everyone.

As a leader it’s important that you evaluate as well as take care of your personal life. This 365 daily devotional enables you to take time and focus on you. It encourages you, makes you evaluate yourself as a leader, gives stories of leaders in the Bible and challenges you to become more like the ultimate leader- God. As a leader I was encouraged as I spent time reading and reflecting on myself for once knowing that ultimately God would use me in some way. If there is a leader in your life, they could benefit from this as well.

If you’re like me when approaching a New Year you glance back over the past year to see what you did accomplish verses what you didn’t, and ask yourself the reduntant question-”what can I do differently this coming year to reach my unmet goals?” Because the gap between the two are often disheartening. However, to help you start 2011 off on the right foot in the community at www.girlfriendsofgrace.org, let me recommend a great book to pull some things about your life in perspective-it’s The Power-Based Life. The Power-Based Life is a great book for anybody who desires a step by step guide on how to plan spiritually, phyisically, and mentality for the life you want. While reading this book, I felt as if Mike Flynt was a close mentor setting with me plainly paving the “how to’s” for the dreams I’m trying to reach. His book gave me great nuggets, illustrations, inspiration stories, and tons of personal experience to help me on my journey to become one of the ONE IN A MILLION ELITE GRADS.

If you are like me, you find the beginning of a new year an opportunity to take inventory, make plans, and set goals. The Power-Based Life by Mike Flynt is a great addition to this New Year’s tradition.
Personally, I usually judge a book by how long it takes me to get through it and how well it keeps my attention. This book was one I completed in a day and a half. I found it easy to read and relate to the examples Flynt gave.
In addition to being a great read, it provides a great wealth of Scriptural support for this power based life strategy. Throughout the book, you are challenged to take a hard look at yourself and take an inventory of areas needing improvement.
One of the most unique or gripping passages for me was the section where Flynt encourages the reader to focus solely on their strength. He uses the story of a pitching coach who asked one of the pitchers he was coaching to focus solely on his best pitch and not “waste” time working on the others. The end result? This pitcher went on to have his best year ever. It left me thinking of what my “sweet spot” is and how I can work to elevate that in 2011.
If you are looking for a good book to pick up, I’d highly encourage you to consider The Power-Based Life.

The Power Based Life is a self-help book for those who don't like self-help books. Mike Flynt is the creator of Powerbase Fitness who will take you through a process of finding your own powerbases. He is striving to help everyone figure out what God designed them do to and then impact the world. I enjoyed this book because it wasn't a guide telling me, "this is what you're doing wrong" or "you need to do this to fix yourself". It was full of real life examples that vary enough to keep anyone compelled to read further. In the book, Mike encourages making your life more content by setting goals for yourself and being disciplined enough to follow through. The thing I enjoyed most about this book was the biblical backing of everything Mike states. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone who wants to find meaning in their work and impact the world.

If you don't enjoy self-help books, this is the read for you.
Mike Flynt, creator of Powerbase Fitness, takes you through a journey of how to discover and use your own life powerbases- the things that will give your life joy and energy. The key characteristic that separates this book from self-help books is its lack of steps. While Mike shares principles and concrete examples of what you can do to discover your powerbases, he doesn't list a step-by-step guide. Instead, the book is keyed toward a conversation that gets you thinking and helps you discover the actions you need to take.
I found two aspects of this book most compelling. First, Mike uses a ton of concrete examples and metaphors. These range from football to religion, from music to automotive. Nothing helps me stay engaged or understand the author better than inserting these images in my head in such variety.
Second, Mike advocates for a contented life. Though he doesn't say this directly, all of his principles and stories are geared toward how to live your life more contentedly. Don't get me wrong! Mike believes in setting and achieving goals, but only when they are the correct goals. And when you're striving after these, you feel more content with your life.
