My daughter loves this curriculum because of the topics covered are so interresting. I like it because of how it improves her reading comprehension skills.

Because high school students are assumed to be at a higher level of thinking, almost equal with adults, parents and teachers forget that comprehension is fundamental to the development of those higher levels and that new material must be understood before it can be applied, analyzed, or evaluated. (That goes for adults too.) These are well-chosen excerpts from real-life texts that focus on understanding the material before moving on to using or critiquing the material. These exercises can be used with advanced readers as well as struggling readers.

I bought this book for my 16 year old son who just took the ACT for the first time. His reading score was lower than what I wanted it to be. We are using this book to boost his comprehension and hopefully raise that score. His reading speed is fine, but his comprehension lacks. The questions in this book are similar to what he will have on the ACT and I believe will help him. The stories are varied and interesting. There is a writing assignment with each lesson which we are not using because reading comprehension is our main goal.

Loving this curriculum so far. It works in a little bit of everything. It addresses comprehension, retention, word meanings as applied to the passages and even gives them a little writing to do. The topics are well chosen and interesting and cover social studies, science, philosophy, logic, math, literature, language and art. My only complaint would be that the answer sheet provided completely left out the answers to the first reading passage.
