I have been very impressed with Shurley English. This is my first year trying it - I am using Level 2 with my 3rd-grader. I have been struggling to find the right curriculum for years. I wish I had found it sooner so my oldest could have had the benefit. I find the lesson plans and explanations to be thorough, and the exercises adequate for learning each new concept. I struggled at first with the jingles because of the awkward meter. But my daughter has learned them quickly, and that's the point. There are times I wonder why they have things scripted as they do, but I am not an English expert, so I am choosing to trust their method, and it has been working. I believe, if you take the time to do it how they suggest, you will find this to be a very beneficial grammar and composition program. Side note: Just a suggestion - don't get stuck on matching the level to whatever grade you think your child should be in (or would be in if they were in public school). I feel that, if I had started my child in Level 3, we may not have had the same positive experience. Perhaps, if you find there isn't enough time to learn new concepts, you may be in a level that's too high for your child. Just a thought.

Absolutely the best Grammar curriculum on the market. I've used it for years with my children. This product produces results!! I have a highschooler who used Shurley Grammar through 8th grade and has consistently tested very high in grammar on standardized tests as well as the SAT. I'm currently starting my 3rd grader on Shurley Grammar. The jingles work and are a fun way to learn grammar rules. Kids never forget them...my 11th grader can still recite the jingles my 3rd grader is just beginning to learn.

This is only the second week we are using Shurley Grammar Level 2 and the first time I've ever used any Shurley Grammar. So far I really like it as the lessons are short yet meaty and enjoyable. In fact when my 7 year old heard the first jingle for the first time, he said, "Wow, this is cool!" I am supplementing it with another language/grammar program for extra practice, but this could easily be done alone. Be aware that this program is GRAMMAR and does not include phonics teaching.

I purchased this on a whim, wanting to try something new and different after 16 years of hs'ing my children. We've used abeka, bob jones, horizons, and a variety of other publications. While Horizons K is still my all time favorite for teaching a child to read, this program will rapidly be a best seller. I can say the first few lessons I was disappointed and thinking we were getting nowhere fast. But, in the interest of finances (it's rare we buy brand new but did this year TYG) we stuck it out a little bit longer. My 7 year old is responding very, very well to this program. With an attention span of NIL, the lessons and practice sessions are short, to the point, and easily mastered. While I didn't think we were ready for 'journaling' which seems to be today's modern buzzword (we hs'ed two teens who never journaled and they both made it to college, go figure), our 7 year old seems to enjoy eeking out a sentence or two. The teacher's manual is ideal, for a change. The lessons are scripted, and easily modified, and the page numbers are given where information can be found. I find no reason to supplement this as I've had in the past with other programs. However, this is not for and does not include spelling and handwriting. I can sincerely recommend this for a 'new' homeschool parent who wants a complete, comprehensive teacher's manual, a parent of an add or adhd student, or a student who may need shorter seat work time, or anyone just looking for something outside the traditional publishers.

Plain and simple I do not like it. It does not give enough practice of the skill that the lessons are teaching.
