Nest Family Entertainment Inspiring Animated Heroes: William Bradford, DVD

A desire for religious freedom forces William Bradford to flee with the Pilgrims. His belief and conviction bring peace and the first Thanksgiving--a lesson in the value of belief. In 1620, John Carver, William Bradford, Captain Standish and 99 pilgrims set sail on the Mayflower toward America in search of religious freedom. As disease and storms hit, they are almost forced to return. William Bradford convinces Captain Standish to press on. The land they choose to build on becomes known as "Plymouth." Immediately, winter sets in and the pilgrims face the harsh effects of weather, hunger and disease. By spring, half of the pilgrims have died. Soon a lone Indian appears on the horizon. Against Captain Standish's wishes, John Carver and William Bradford befriend Samoset. Samoset sends the English-speaking Squanto and Chief Massasoit to the pilgrims, who make a peace pact. Squanto and Samoset live with the pilgrims and teach them how to live off the land. After the first successful crop, Bradford proposes a "feast of thanksgiving." Thus, William Bradford's belief leads him to become the father of Thanksgiving Day. Recommended for ages 4 to 8. Running Time: Approximately 45 minutes, Dolby Digital Stereo. Directed by Richard Rich, former Walt Disney Productions director.

Wonderful animated story of William Bradford. Our whole family watched it and it is so well done, depicting his role in the sailing of the Mayflower and the Pilgrims' first winter. The story of Squanto is also portrayed sensitively and interwoven into this incredible time in history. As a direct descendant of Gov. William Bradford, I personally have a keen interest in his life, as well as teaching my children about their heritage. And I feel this portrayal is done superbly. All American children have the pilgrims as part of their own heritage, whether directly related to them or not because they helped to set the foundation of our country. The recommended ages say 4-8, but I would say that it would hold the attention of those much older- myself included!

This is a great resource to liven up your history program. Both children and adults will benefit from the story and the animation is good as well. I only wish it were longer!
