Concordia Publishing House Saint Nicholas: The Real Story of the Christmas Legend, Softcover

Here is the story of the historical Saint Nicholas, who was a servant of God. Through him, God's love was reflected to others. The story touches on the ministry of Nicholas and his generous gift of a dowry to three young girls as a response to God's love in Jesus. And it brings application to our own lives as we, too, respond with grateful hearts to God's great gift of love to us.

Combining museum-quality artwork and family friendly language, this book clearly articulates how God showered His love upon us through Christ and helps children see that our own gift-giving is a grateful response to the sacrificial gift of God's Son. Recommended for ages 4 to 8.

I am a mom to two children under 4 years, as well as a French and German teacher. This was the only book I could get through our local library that accurately taught about Saint Nicholas of Myra - the real person - rather than the hybridized American legend of Santa Claus. The European traditions have more in common with the Saint Nicholas that orthodox and Roman Catholic Christians celebrate. I desired for my children to know the Christian Saint Nicholas so I have the board book version. It is a great introduction for young children to the real Nicholas. The book helps showcase Nicholas' simple generosity to the poor and care for the disenfranchised. The book highlights just one Nicholas legend - generously giving dowries to three sisters. There's a strong message about Jesus being the real gift of Christmas at the end. The basic message of the book is that Nicholas loved God and Jesus, and shared the good things that God had given him with others. I liked it well enough that we bought the book and read it every year at the beginning of Advent, and especially on December 6 - Saint Nicholas Day.

I think I was expecting more from the book than it told. Even though it tells the stories of how he gave money for the girls dowries, at the end of the book it gives the impression that they aren't certain about the story. I was looking for something more concrete to share with my six year old about what he did for children. The artwork was beautiful.

This is a precious story. I love how it shows sacrificial giving, giving without expecting anything in return, & giving without any recognition to the giver.

The book only talked about St. Nicholas's giving of the coins for the diaries of three sisters. I was hoping for more information to share with my students.

Mom of eight
I purchased this sweet book for my children for Christmas this year. I was skeptical...thinking it would be impossible to find the book I've been searching for eighteen years to find. My children were never taught "Santa Claus" was real so, "Santa, Are you for real? (another book)" wasn't what really fit our family. This book was perfect!! We all loved it!
