I did not realize the print would be so small. It is difficult to read. The quality is great and it is beautiful, but it won't be one I use a lot.

Great pre-seminary basic instructive information for the lay pastor deacon or those wanting a fuller understanding of the church growth and its artifaces history both good and not so. Some of its ideology and the thinking of the time. Beautifully rendered with great art and a help for students looking for time period info and the thinking of those eras. Maintains continuity.

Using this book as a resource for Generation Bible College
class on the History of Christianity. This has been an amazing adventure through the 'real' history of my faith.

The secondary issues this book notes in Christian history is fine, but when it comes to the primary issues (the incarnation [John 1:14; Phil. 2:6-8] and deity of Christ [John 8:24, 58], His virgin birth [Isa. 7:14; Matt. 1:23], His substitutionary death and His PHYSICAL resurrection [Rom. 4:25; 5:8; 10:9-10; 1 Cor. 15]) the author leaves A LOT of room for doubt and speculation. These are essential Christian doctrines. Yet the author writes as if the history of Christianity is open to any various view. The publisher should be ashamed for publishing such a book. I would highly NOT recommend this book for anything but kindling.

I was very impressed with the quality of the book - from its glossy pages and great binding to its very readable and well illustrated text. Its one of the book I will reach for just for a good read for an hour or so, as well as for references and quotations.

This is a very large textbook that I am finding quite interesting. I can easily read a few pages and highlight important details that lead up to our present-day Christian doctrines.

I'm sorry to be so harsh, but having addressed 6 texts on Early Christian History and several historical websites by college Profs specializing in 1-2nd century history and Patristic writings (Early Church Fathers) in the past 2 years, I had to put this book down after the first 10 pages--Aside from the secular stint (which I could handle, as some historians hold a deist/agnostic slant) the writer/editor(s) were seemingly clueless or assumtively uncertain on historically documented 2nd Temple Judaism, Messianic Judaism, and accurate Scriptural exegesis as well. Utterly unbelievable to me, to the point of having no trust in any further page or chapter. Sadly, I kid you not.
I might suggest these well known classics instead: The Story of Christianity, Dr. Justo Gonzales (Early Church to the Reformation), Church History in Plain Language, Dr. Bruce Shelley, Men & Movements in the Primitive Church (a study in early non-Pauline Christianity, F.F. Bruce, The Early Church by Henry Chadwick. (even Fr. Hans Kung's book "The Catholic Church" had more accurate corroboration than this book concerning the early period AD 30-68, in spite of it's denominational flavor). There is strong consensus between these texts (even though early history still has a latitude of interpretation) which is critical to gather as (overall) accurate a picture as possible, and free of conceptual or assumptive bias as you can. Most all of these are college 100-200 level works, thorough, detailed, and vetted by peer review; but are also known for being easy to read. All of these also add sections (Bruce using cross references) to Early Church Fathers as well. Again, I'm sorry to be so harsh (don't usually bother to comment), but Zondervan really fumbled with this one in my opinion, and there really isn't an excuse to be this vague and outright inaccurate, given the wealth of easily established and corroborated research available, and especially the responsibility to be historically accurate on such a topic, so critical for new believers who might come across this book and be led astray or worse. That's what editors are supposed to be for (and/or a MPhil in Theology as the author's CV states?).... Yes?. Ugh.

Had great expectations of this book and the first thing i looked at said that Jesus baptized although the Bible clearly said that he did not do it himself so now don't want to read it anymore in case more things are wrong.

If you are looking for a Christian History book that reaffirms your Faith in the Scriptures then this book is not for you. The author raises subtle questions of doubt throughout his account of history. To be fair, I did not read the book to it's entirety.

Interesting, great graphics, sidebars with quotes or pertinent information, clearly written, great Timeline in the front, scholarly depth and breadth, but easy to read.

Unfortunately this book on Christian history is lacking. It is as if the writer was trying to reinvent the wheel and forgot to provide a means by which to attach it to the axle. How can a complete and accurate account of the entire history of the Christian Church be contained in a mere 560 pages? It cannot. I would steer clear of this one. There are much better and more complete histories on the Christian church. Both Andrew Miller and Philips Schaff wrote history of the Christian Church that is far more accurate, revealing much of what anguishes the Lord Jesus due to the many divisions found within today’s Christianity.

This book I bought after reading a couple of reviews. This is a high quality textbook, with vivid color that helps to bring the artifacts and archaeological evidence to light. I am not a student, but as a layman Christian the information is in-depth, challenging but not "over my head". Would definitely recommend it to seekers looking to learn more about the history and circumstances that shaped the faith.
