I hesitantly bought this curriculum due to the mediocre reviews. I have been thrilled with it! I am teaching a 4th and a 7th grader French I and this curriculum really packs a punch! They both have a background in Latin, but none in French. This has been just the right amount of challenge. I am considering taking 2 years to go through the entire curriculum to ensure mastery because there is so much to work on in this curriculum.

I studied French in High School and College and have found the Teacher's Manual very easy to follow. It also gives great hints and social context that I never even learned in college! I am more than thrilled with this chewy curriculum.

This is the second French curriculum we've tried, and I've found it to be very easy to implement for a parent/teacher with no French background. The format is laid out well and is easy to follow. The lessons are short enough to not overwhelm, but are definitely substantial. The First Start French website has downloadable quizzes, which is a nice added benefit. The only thing I've not liked, which is what earned it 4 stars instead of 5, is that on the audio cd, the speaker speaks fast and doesn't pause long enough between words to allow the student to repeat what she's saying. Speaking fast does force the student to listen intently to catch the pronunciation and accent, but it's frustrating to try to repeat the words and not have time. Overall, I've found this to be a great beginning to learning French. I'm using it with my 11 year old and she enjoys this very much.

My children were all born in Quebec. The oldest ones had French school there, so didn't need a French program. My youngest, however, was not able to attend French school before we returned to the States. I was looking for a program for her to give her at least some foundation in French. This was mildly helpful because I had a background in French. I don't think we could have done it without my previous experience. I would recommend going as slowly as necessary if you choose to use this program. Better half the book done well than complete the book and forget all that has been covered.

I love the layout of this course: it's clean and concise. It includes classic French quotes, grammar, and dialogue. However, we have found that it moves too quickly for most middle schoolers. I believe that the content should qualify for the first year of High School but it doesn't provide enough review or helps to really teach the concepts. I'd like to see this program revised and improved. That said, there are few French programs on the market and I'm grateful that Memoria Press made a strong attempt.
