Ligonier Ministries ESV Reformation Study Bible (2nd Edition) - Hardcover

Now with maps!

Widely considered one of the best tools available for Bible study and previously only available in the New King James Version, the Reformation Study Bible (RSB) has been updated to the readable and accurate English Standard Version (ESV).

Respected theologian Dr. R.C. Sproul, founder and chairman of Ligonier Ministries, served as this study Bible's general editor. "The Reformation Study Bible contains a modern restatement of Reformation truth in its comments and theological notes. Its purpose is to present the light of the Reformation afresh," stated Dr. Sproul.

The thousands of in-depth study notes included in the RSB were compiled from over 50 distinguished biblical scholars, including Drs. J.I. Packer, James Boice, and Wayne Grudem. In addition to the comprehensive study notes, the RSB offers readers extended discussions on the authority of Scripture, the atonement, and other key aspects of biblical theology.

The RSB is intended for use by anyone who wants a deeper understanding of the Scriptures. The reader will appreciate book introductions, an extensive cross-reference system, and illuminated words and terms within the Bible that are crucial to an in-depth understanding. This new edition in the ESV is published by Ligonier Ministries and produced and distributed by P&R Publishing of Phillipsburg, NJ.

One of the endorsements I read for this Bible said that this is the "Gold standard" in Bibles. I agree.
This Bible is the best study Bible I have yet to use. It is the flowing and easy-reading ESV version which is accurate and eloquent. On top of being a superb version, it contains wonderful study notes, articles, and commentary that make it not only a Bible, but a study tool. My favorite part is that this study Bible highlights the Word of God rather than any man's opinion as the contributors share insight based on a cross centered view point. While I use several other study Bibles in my personal study, I appreciate this one the most for coming back to the heart of the matter - the gospel - from start to finish. The features in this study Bible will help you learn more for your cross centered life.
This study Bible is a wonderful, easy-to-use, and simple tool for teens and adults both. It's a must-read and must-use!

The Reformation Study Bible is a study Bible using the ESV text and published by Ligonier Ministries, Orlando, FL. Defining its purpose, R.C. Sproul writes: "The Reformation Study Bible contains a modern restatement of Reformation truth in it comments and theological notes. Its purpose is to present the light of the Reformation afresh."
The Reformation Study Bible achieves this purpose admirably. The verse-by-verse comments and relevant study notes are excellent, explaining and enunciating truth in an overtly conservative style, and doing justice to conservative Christian orthodoxy. Metaphors and other complex literary terms are made easy to understand. Eight section introductions guide the reader through the Scriptures with admirable skill and insight, while short introductions to each book of the Bible provide a launching pad for serious exegesis.
In comparison to its main competitor, the more recent ESV Study Bible (published by Crossway), the RSB (Reformation Study Bible) can still hold its own. Its main advantage is its simplicity. It has less study notes and charts than the ESVSB, and thus displays more of the Scripture (and in a larger font) on each page. Furthermore, its introductions are only half the size of its counterpart. While the RSB comes in black-and-white compared to the ESVSB's colour charts and maps, there are many who will find the presentation of the RSB less overwhelming, with its more traditional 'study Bible' character. Its size alone, 1950 pages, a whopping 800 pages less than the ESVSB, make it more manageable for devotional and congregational use.
The Reformation Study Bible can find a place in every Christian's library, as the recommendation from R. Albert Mohler Jr. declares. Viewed objectively, its main strength is that it keeps the Scripture text to the fore. The simplicity and beauty of its presentation will make it a publication that will be cherished for generations.

There are a couple of things that are a little disappointing about this SB. First and foremost, the ESV text is the 2001 text, and since the text was updated in 2007 and this SB is "2008", I see no good reason for not updating the text. Also, there is no color in this SB at all. For these two resons I took away a star. However, the content of the Bible is really helpful. In fact, the study notes are so good that it makes this Bible a good buy in spite of the text and lack of color. Update the text, make it a little prettier, and this would be a five star Study Bible.

I bought two of these for my children to aid them in their studies. My husband had one first, and I'm impressed by the lucid articles and study lessons. My church has also purchased these for use as pew bibles.

The ESV Reformation Study Bible(2nd Edition) has been a wonderful addition to my library. The ESV translation is easy to read and understand and is known for it accuracy. The notes have been very valuable. The "Reformation" was one of the largest movements in church history, and this Bible does indeed "present the light of the Reformation afresh," as Dr. Sproul states.

I love this Bible. Not so many study notes, but what I found is that when you study the Bible for yourself study notes are only good for checking what you've already discovered with the Spirit's guidance and the turning and turning and turning the pages of your Bible. And when I checked the notes with what the Bible teaches, I think this Bible is a good helper in your studies. ESV translation is also great. You can't lose when you buy this. I took half a star because I didn't use this Bible that frequently yet that I might give five stars for that. That's just for safety, however ;)
