The information in this book is fantastic. The organization, and beautiful presentation makes it a must have for understanding the context of the entire New Testament. I must have for any serious Bible Scholar. The price is also remarkably reasonable for the amount of information and high quality scholarship.

I am delighted with the outlay and content of this book but it has way too many editing oversights--missing words, extra words, improper consonant breaking of words, and in one case a short duplication of a previous section. When I noticed that it was printed in Singapore I understood why the problems. This is not my first problem with grammatical mistakes in books printed in the Orient. But, a thumbs-up on the book as a whole.

I am thrilled with this product....will find it very useful in mnay of the lectures I prepare for college classes in theology. Wonderful to just sit and find new information.

This book met and even exceeded what I had hoped for in researching materials for a class I am teaching on Inter-Testemental history. I agree it may seem scholastic to a point but this should not be a barrier to purchasing it. The beginning student and the more seasoned learner can greatly benefit from this research work. His connections to biblical references help the learner see the relevance of the historical data to bible study. I will be recommending this to my students. Outside of that it is a fun read. We will see the Biblical people and movements not just as history, but as real people who were used to shape their times.

After decades of hearing references in sermons and lessons concerning certain groups that existed in the First Century AD, I now have a much better idea of what the speaker was referring to.This book is not light literature, to be read in a day or two. It is evidently a seminary textbook, heavily annotated and referenced, but it explains so much that I often wondered about. For example, the relationships among pharasees, sadducees, and scribes was well described. The background information concerning the Hellenistic and Hebrew Jews was explained. I read the chapter on the Roman army, where the functions of a centurion are explained, the week before my pastor preached on Acts 10, and his message sent me back to the book to reread that chapter. I now can understand much more of what I hear.The only reason I didn't give the book five stars is, in my opinion, the book is so detailed that it occasionally is difficult to read. If I had a seminary instructor to ask questions, I possibly would have been less confused. Nevertheless, I am glad I ordered and read it.
