Baker The Parables: Understanding the Stories Jesus Told

The parables are rich with guidance, but sometimes they're hard to decipher. In this book, all of Jesus' parables and most of his parabolic sayings from the Synoptic Gospels are explained and interpreted from an evangelical perspective. Careful attention is given to the historical and cultural setting of each story, offering practical insight into Jesus' words. The entire text of each parable is included, followed by the author's commentary. The parables' applications for the Christian life make this book a valuable sermon or lesson preparation tool. Originally published in 1980 as The Parables of Jesus, this revised book contains recent study on the parables and is now more accessible to lay readers, students, teachers, and pastors. Technical details appear in endnotes for those who want to do further study.

The book is excellent and I've enjoyed reading and teaching from it. The value was good, but the delivery was a little slower than expected.

I have not had the time as of this thus far to read a large number of the Parables. But I always wanted a book explaining this important subject regarding what Jesus was really saying in his parables. Some are apparent others more complex. I have many christian books explaining various topics such as Escatology. At this time the Parables I have read about are explained in detail and seem to be done very well. The examples have given me a better understanding of Jesus messages to us as Christians who desire to live a more spiritual life. As a retired engineer as a telephone switching systems and computer systems analyst, I love to understand things as accurately as possible. All in all, so far a great addition to my Bible study library. Buy it, you will enjoy it, and learn more about ous Savior and his principles and how to live your new life as a Christian!

This is an excellent treatment on the parables of Jesus. Kistemaker's descriptions and explainations open the imagination to give the reader "ears to hear," with cultural and historical reference to each parable.I also appreciate that the NIV text for each parable is included. William Barclay's "The Parables of Jesus," is another very good companion book to Kistemaker's, but Barclay only provides the Scripture references. Having the text of the parable in the book makes it much easier to sit in an easy chair and not have to fumble around with both book and Bible - even though one is compelled to do so to look up the excellent footnoted references. And the footnotes are also an excellent source for other reading material - although most of the bibliography cited in Kistemaker's book is currently out of print. Thankfully, there's ebay to find those hard to find out of print texts, huh?
