It is the summer of 1838 in St. Lawrenceville, Missouri, and Molly McGarvie's life is about to change forever. But when Samuel's unscrupulous brother takes over the family business and leaves Molly to fend for herself, she knows she must head out on her own. this is a new author for me and one i was very pleased with. once i started to read this book and her other 2 in the series i was hooked. i could not stop reading til i finished them all and they were very well written, captivating and enjoyable. i look forward to reading more by this author.

This book turned out to be quite an enjoyable read. This was one of the few books that I've read in recent months that brings out God and the way that He works in our lives to change our hearts and make us more like Christ in a very prominent way. When Molly's husband suddenly dies, she and her children are torn from their home and she is faced with leaving behind the only other adult person she cares about. I truly enjoyed the way her story ran from tragedy and defeat to just trying to survive to learning how to rely on God day to day. There were a couple of twists that I thought played out nicely through out the plot and a couple of things that didn't work so well, but honestly those were very minor and didn't interfere with the overall story at all.

In all honesty, the book was very encouraging and very inspiring. I like it when an author can actually give you a mental picture and can grab your attention at the beginning of a book, and take you on a journey all the way through it, even when your heart pounds through excitement, or you cry, or you literally get mad at a fictional character!

Ann Shorey has done an excellent job creating a realistic picture of the hardships of life for a widow with children living during the 1800's. I appreciated the fact that Molly is struggling with a life that has not gone according to her plan, therefore she has to deal with issues of faith, forgiveness and the surrendering of her will to the Lord. Molly's struggle to provide for her family in the face of the hardships she endures combined with her eventually finding love again come together to provide an enjoyable read.

I loved this book - it had everything to offer - faith after loss in particular. Molly loses her husband, her childhood companion and helpmate, her younger son, and the loss of vision in one eye of her oldest son - and her faith never wavers. But through all of this, she brings another life into the world, a new baby daughter. She finds a home of their
own, meets a fascinating Indian woman who gives her a priceless gift and so much more. Molly is a talent on the loom and the reader gets an education in the art of weaving. All in all, a GREAT read.

It was a great story of survival, but very boring for me. I wasn't overly impressed. The writing techniques were great, but the story was very lulled. It didn't grab my attention. I loved the love story part of it , but overal a book if i had read first would not have bought.

Molly's story gives a glimpse of how difficult living in the West must have been. When her husband died, many would have just given up but she kept going strong for her children. Even though things kept going downhill, she never stopped because it got too hard. Frontier life was very hard and she somehow managed to survive and take care of her family by herself. It's a very inspiring and motivating story. I would have been so angry and bitter towards her brother in law and would have wanted to wish a thousand deaths on him. She however learns not to give in to vengeance and while she is angry, she moves on and does not let it consume her. It was also an interesting aspect of the story to focus also on slavery during the time period. Usually Western stories and slavery don't usually mix so it was a nice change to see them integrated. There was one scene that made me want to gag as it involves a stick and an eyeball. That was the first time I've read something like that in a book and it caught me off guard and made me shiver.While I enjoyed the book very much, there were times when I felt the story to be cliched and a bit predictable. I felt like I had read the plot before in other historical Christian fiction novels and that I knew what was going to happen. The way some of the characters acted felt like I had seen them before. Also the way the how Westward experience was portrayed such as the portrayal of Native Americans, slavery, and just Western frontier life in general seem to play up the "myth of the West". There's nothing wrong with how it was portrayed, it just seem like there was nothing new to add and it just added to the stereotype of Western life. I just didn't feel that anything new or innovative added to the subject. However, as I said, I did enjoy this book. Even though the story was familiar, it was comforting. Molly is a strong women and I enjoyed reading her story. I will be looking forward to the next book in the series.

In this historical novel, Ann Shorey has created a believable pre-Civil War world peopled with well-motivated characters struggling with realistically portrayed practical and spiritual problems. Highlights of the book include well-researched descriptions of weaving and other details of rural life in that era. But the book's most outstanding characteristic is the fully mature mind and writing style of its author. It will be received with pleasure by readers hungry for a mature product.

Excellent book! I loved it. The author kept me wanting to read more after each page. It was so hard to put down and when I did that book was all that I thought about. This book is for you. Can't wait for the second book in the series.

When her husband, Samuel, dies of cholera, leaving her with three children and a fourth due soon, she searches for a way to provide for them. When Samuels scheming brother forces her out of the family business, she begrudgingly accepts her brothers offer to start over again in Beldon Grove.En route to her new home, tragedy strikes once again, leaving Molly reeling. When she goes into labor, shes forced to accept the help of Dr. Karl Spengler, the very man she blames for causing her further heartbreak. While Molly struggles with her lack of forgiveness and shoulders burdens shes reluctant to surrender to the Lord, Karl is plagued with guilt. Can these two overcome their differences, allow God to bring healing, and give love a chance?Shorey has created likable characters and does a great job throwing hurdles in their paths. I ached for Molly and Karl and longed to see their situations improve. This need kept me turning the pages. Since Shorey focuses heavily on Mollys struggle and her day-to-day life, I hungered for the few scenes when the reader gets to know kindhearted Karl. Being a fan of traditional romance, I would have liked to see more interaction between Molly and Karl.The Edge of Light is well written. Shorey does a fine job of depicting life in 1838 Missouri. Her story takes the reader on an emotional journey they wont soon forget. If youre a fan of historical inspirational fiction, I recommend Shoreys debut novel. If, like me, you find her to be an author who delivers a satisfying read, youll want to look for the upcoming books in the series, At Home in Beldon Grove.
