Vision Video Molokai: The Story of Father Damien, DVD

To deal with the leprosy problem in the Hawaiian Islands in 1872, sufferers were relentlessly exiled to Molokai, a barren isle off the coast. There they lived in miserable surroundings, abandoned by the outside world. To alleviate their fate, Father Damien was the first priest to go to Molokai. His bishop's last words were that "he must not touch anyone". Little by little, Damien earned the trust of the lepers, and eventually, his appeals for nuns and supplies resonated throughout the world, much to the displeasure of his superiors. Even when Damien got sick himself, his energy did not abate, and he carried on working for the well-being of his "fellow lepers" to the end. Cast includes Peter O'Toole, Kris Kristofferson, Sam Neill, and David Wenham. 112 minutes.

Special Features:

Heartbreaking to see the devotion for a detrimental end! I was pleased to see how much he cared for the people effected by leprosy; to bag and plead for their cause and to love them when no one else would! However, I am a Christian and do not believe in the worship of idols as he so clearly presented that he did. Only Christ can save you not penance nor confessing to a pope or bishop! We that believe in the true God should serve others as "Father Damien" did!

Molokai - The Story of Father Damien, is one of the most inspirational films one will ever see.
A truly powerful film about faith and how that faith can elevate the human spirit to greatness. If humanity has one redeeming feature that can aspire it to be a blessing in the universe regardless of its bloody and selfish history, is its capacity to love and self-sacrifice. The recently canonized Father Damien exemplifies the very essence of this to the point where we feel we see the image of God through humanity. If God communicates or shows Himself to humanity, it is through people like Father Damien. A modern saint for modern times.
Paul Cox does a magnificent job of creating a beautiful film that captures the wonder of this man. As for the actor who plays Father Damien, David Wenham, what can one say? In an absolutely brilliant performance, his performance conveys the spirit of the great saint. In an example of the emotional power of cinema, he becomes Father Damien to the viewer.
Everything about this film I found to be satisfying. The supporting actors were excellent. The screenplay by John Briley was excellent. Finally, the emotional power of the theme music by Paul Grabowski and Wim Mertens can bring tears to one's eyes.
A beautiful film about a beautiful soul.

this was a terrific movie - well made, well acted. fortunately, i read the biography first and was better able to understand who some of the characters were. the movie was intense yet inspiring. i hope to share it with my children for them to get a better grasp of hawaii and what leprosy is and even more so what true Christianity is.
