HarperOne Great Divorce

Lewis's highly influential fantasy about heaven and hell. In Grey Town the inhabitants keep moving farther apart because of their quarrels, while in the Country, sunrise always seems a moment away. Heaven is real and the redeemed quite solid, while hell is minuscule and the damned insubstantial. 160 pages, softcover. HarperOne.

This book was simply amazing. It was relatively short and super easy to read. It is one of those books that makes you think about life and yourself: "Am I doing the right thing?", "Is the way I've been living really what life is all about?" I recommend this book to everyone!

Great allegory/fantasy about concepts of the afterlife in Lewis's time and ours.

The Great Divorce is an allegorical  journey by bus from the Grey Town (Hell) to Heaven. From there is an extraordinary story of good versus evil, Heaven and Hell, and the inhabitants of each.
The Great Divorce is an extremely helpful and thought provoking book and very hard to put down once you start. I finished it in a day! Lewis's descriptions of the concepts of Heaven and Hell are as always, very helpful and clear. I highly recommend this book to everyone, no matter what your religious viewpoints are. Everyone is going either to Heaven or Hell, and The Great Divorce helps us see quite clearly how our present acts and choices are daily leading us towards one or the other.

A real gem from C .S. Lewis. Lewis does not write in his tradition theological focus. While "The Great Divorce" is theological, it is allegorical and has a depth of meaning that a casual reader can easily miss.
If you want to read a delightful book written by a delightful author you will certainly enjoy "The Great Divorce."

This is a wonderful thought provoking book on a subject that needs to be viewed in more than the light that has been available.

I was extremely impressed on many levels by the characters and situaitons he used to bring his vast knowledge and gifted imagination together in such a helpful book. This great parable gave me a new perspective on many issues and helped with some BIG questions, which seemed so complex before reading this book. I am very thankful that I read his Biography before this incredible book. I highly suggest reading 'surprised by joy' before or after reading this truly gifted book. Many quotes to share with other Christians, regardless of which Church they attend. Thank you C.S. Lewis.

Having just joined facebook, I've noticed some people list their favorite books in their profile. "The Great Divorce" happened to be listed on two friends lists and, knowing them to be both well-read and also loving their taste in general, I bought the book. I figured it would be a theological essay. It's not. It's full of powerful dream-like imagery and I found myself having to read a number of pages twice in that -- it is just so -- intense. The characters in the book are so pathetic and yet so familiar to my life which is unsettling. I think storytelling (opposed to preaching or teaching) can be enormously compelling and much more enlightening when the topic is spiritually heavy. This book conveyed "big truths" but did not come across as preachy or overly opinionated. I remember thinking that this (the storytelling aspect, I mean) while reading it and wondering if that is why Christ used parables to teach. I'll stop here...I think more words will just diminish it's impact

This book can truly change your life. It profoundly exposes the myths that society has accumulated about Purgatory and Paradise. Although it presents the allegory, it also exposes the lie. The answer to our dilemma is found in the careful study of scripture, an intimate relationship with our creator, a complete surrender of our will to Him, and total obedience.

Absolutely profound. As always, C.S. Lewis uses fantasy to teach basic principles of Christianity. Wonderful.

My personal choice as his best work. Lewis shows, sometimes almost humorously, how Hell is our choice, not God's; and in a gripping episode how, in persisting in sin, we make our greatest strength equally great, and eternally fatal, weakness.
