Really enjoyed the book. I highly recommend all Tracie Peterson's novels. I purchased all three books in the Alaskan Quest series as each book interweaves with the others. In fact, this series follows the Yukon Quest series.

Jacob Barringer is one of the better male characters Ive read. Hes adventurous, confident, and loyal, but hes got a little problem with saying exactly whats on his mind, even if its not the most appropriate thing at the time. I liked thatmaybe because I can relate! On the other hand, Helaina Beecham--the young investigator mentioned aboverubbed me entirely the wrong way. She causes all sorts of problems for the other main characters. An unbeliever on a mission to rid the world of evil, she has questionable strategies. The author uses Helainas and Jacobs differing opinions on justice and mercy to give a clear presentation of the Gospel, making this book a great gift for a lost friend. For a Christian, though, it was a bit skimable during those sections. If youre looking for a learning experience in the early 1900s Alaskan frontier, youve come to the right place. Peterson paints a beautiful picture of the tundra and its people. America is debating whether to join World War I, and Alaska isnt even a state yet. It makes for a very fresh setting. The end of the book is left wide open for the next in the series, and I plan on getting on that right away.Although, I found it a little predictable, its worth the read.

In the first book in the Alaskan Quest series, brother and sister Jacob and Leah Barringer raise sled dogs and run a trading post for the native people and a few missionaries. They love the rugged north, its peace and beauty, but there arent too many prospects for marriage here, and Leah fears God has decided not to provide her with the husband and children she desires. Leahs one and only love, Jayce Kincaid, strolls back into her life after a ten-year absence. However, love seems to have been replaced by bitterness and anger as she prepares to turn thirty. Jayce claims to have changed, to have given his life to the Lord, and is wondering if Leah might once again feel for him as she had when she was a girl of nineteen. When Jayce and Jacob, the two men Leah loves most, agree to join an arctic exploration team bound for the North Pole, how will this dangerous project impact her own future? Meanwhile, another threat to Leahs happiness, Helaina Beecham, arrives in Alaska looking for Jayce Kincaid, the man she believes is guilty of two murders and the attempted murder of her brother, an agent with the Pinkerton Detective Agency. A woman who has dedicated her life to making sure justice is served, wrongdoers are punished, and the law is upheld, Helaina relishes the assignment her brother has given her: find Jayce Kincaid and make sure he pays for his crimes. This is Tracie Petersons second series set in Alaska. There are a lot of exciting twists in this plot. However, the characters seem underdeveloped, as is the main love story, but the author succeeds in showing that God does hold Leahs future in his hands, and He will provide for her in His own perfect timing. The author leaves us with a cliffhanger concerning Helaina Beecham, who is the character poised for the most change. Jacob takes her to the Bible time and time again, and Helainas respect for him forces her to look at her attitudes in a new light. -- Melanie Dickerson

In 1915 in Last Chance Creek of the Alaska Territory, Leah Barringer anxiously waits for the return of her beloved brother, Jacob, who left two months ago by dogsled to get needed supplies from Nome. While waiting for Jacobs expected arrival, Leah reflects back to when she lived with her guardians in Ketchikan and told her brothers friend Jayce Kincaid that she loved him, but he not so delicately reminded her she was not even of legal majority age and he saw her as Jacobs kid sister.
Jacob returns accompanied by Jayce who has changed since his cold rebuff of Leahs opening of her heart to him. He has found the Lord and plans to make up what he did to Leah who he realized after he rejected her that he wanted her. Leah fears being burned again by him.
The two male friends discuss an Arctic expedition which frightens Leah who loves both of them. Pinkertons Helaina Beecham arrives from DC to bring Jayce to justice for killing two agents and robbing a bank. He insists he is innocent yet he hides the entire truth from his friends, the law and his beloved Leah. In spite of witnesses affirming his innocence, Leah wonders if his expedition is a farce to escape law enforcement from the Lower Forty-Eight.
The first Alaskan Quest tale is a terrific historical thriller that provides an appreciative audience with a powerful look back to life in the Alaska Territory. Little things like the transportation to get there provide an incredible glimpse at the era. Mystery, romance and inspirational elements interweave within a vivid picturesque character driven early twentieth century tale that will have new readers seeking Tracie Petersons back list like the Heirs of Montana series.
Harriet Klausner
