Uncomfortable. That is the only way to say it. Walter Brueggeman always makes his readers understand that God is bigger, more powerful, and more mysterious than we can imagine. More than this, he puts us in our place-and YHWH in his. We are small, God is entirely OTHER. This work, An Unsettling God, written for first year Old Testament students is no different. Pulses quicken as Brueggemann examines YHWH's "dialogical character", and the terrible and wondrous implications of God's "partnerships" with Israel, Creation, the Nations, and the single human individual. Thus, Brueggemann gives his readers not only a sound theological introduction to the Old Testament, he relates it directly-and disturbingly-to their lives.
