Gisela Cramer must leave one cold winter night when the enemy once again comes to close to where she is living. But when her cousin Ella and Grandfather can not go, Ella begs Gisela to take her two young daughters with her.

But the way to Berlin, where her Mother lives, is harder then she may have ever planned. But along the way she meets Mitch Edwards, an escaped British POW who may be in even more trouble. In order to save him she tells the other German refugees he is her husband.

But with trying to protect Ella's little girls, and new people joining their group who may find out the truth about Mitch, getting to anywhere that is safer is going to be hard.

I believe this is the first book I have ever read by Liz Tolsma and I really enjoyed it. The book was really well done and the people and places where they went where very well decribed. And the things the characters learned along the way were really good. But because it did take place during WWII there were some hard things happening that Gisela seen or heard. But Liz Tolsma does a wonderful job writing and if you like books that are around the time of WWII you should definitely check this one out!

I received this book free from the publisher, Thomas Nelson, through the BookLook Bloggers book review program. The opinions are my own.

I am a history buff. World War II is one of my favorite periods of history, and because of that I love fiction set during that period. Daisies are Forever by Liz Tolsma is a book that I just couldn't put down. Very historically accurate and bursting with fascinating characters, this book brings World War II era Germany to life.

The story begins in Heiligenbeil, East Prussia, as the Russians are marching steadily towards the little town where Gisela Cramer lives with her grandfather, her cousin, and her cousin's two little girls. Forced to leave her home, Gisela suddenly becomes the caretaker of the two girls. As she makes her way toward Berlin where she hopes to find her mother, an unlikely little band forms around her: a couple of forgetful elderly ladies, some British prisoners of war recently escaped from the prison camp, a German soldier, and a would-be actress. As alliances form and danger increases for some members of the odd little party, unlikely attractions emerge and Gisela finds herself being fought over by one of the British soldiers and the German officer.

    Daisies are Forever

    By Liz Tolsma

This is an incredibly moving story. Set at the height of the European theater, Germany hes been closed in by the Western allies and the Russian Red Army and the Third Reich's fall is imminent. This is the setting in which California born Gisela Crammer finds herself. The years she has lived in Germany are not ones of happiness, but rather sorrow and guilt.

With the Red Army mere hours away from the home of her grandfather and cousin, Gisela is forced to flee with her cousin's two young daughters. As they flee to the west Gisela comes to the aid of an escaped British POW, claiming that she is his wife.

Mitch Edwards has been in a German prison for years and when the opportunity to escape presented itself he took it. But he wasn't prepared for the dangers would face him starting with his accent. When a beautiful young woman claims that they are married - Mitch is given a chance to survive in this tide of refugees.

Their journey towards freedom is fraught with dangers - air raids, SS officers, the ever approaching Red Army, the weather, and a shortage of food. But through it all it is also a journey of faith and trust. Gisela and Mitch have to learn to let go of their individual guilts and accept that God is in control and always had been.

Daisies are Forever is a book that should appeal to fans of the Thoenes - the characters will touch your heart as they struggle to survive in a world that is in the midst of change. This book is not your normal historical fiction that happens to be set in World War II, but rather this is story of the lives of a small group of people trying to survive long enough to see the end of Hitler's War. This is a book you don't want to miss reading.

Liz Tolsma in her new book "Daisies Are Forever" Book Two in the Women Of Courage series published by Thomas Nelson brings us into the life of Gisela Cramer in 1945.

From the back cover: In the final days of Nazi Germany, the strength of one woman's heart will determine the fate of a family.

    Prussia, 1945

The fall of the Third Reich is imminent. As the merciless Red Army advances from the East, the German people of Prussia await the worst.

Among them is twenty-year-old Gisela Cramer, an American living in Heiligenbeil with her cousin Ella and their ailing grandfather. When word arrives that the Russians will invade overnight, Ella urges Gisela to escape to Berlin–and take Ella's two small daughters with her.

The journey is miserable and relentless. But when Gisela hears the British accent of a phony SS officer, she poses as his wife to keep him safe among the indignant German refugees. In the blink of an eye, Mitch Edwards and Gisela are Herr and Frau Joseph Cramer.

Through their tragic and difficult journey, the fabricated couple strives to protect Ella's daughters, hoping against hope for a reunion. But even as Gisela and Mitch develop feelings beyond the make—believe, the reality of war terrorizes their makeshift family.

With the world at its darkest, and the lives of two children at stake, the counterfeit couple finds in each other a source of faith, hope, and the love they need to survive.

History, romance, family drama and suspense all bundled together into one very entertaining story. What makes this story even more interesting is that the characters are not only based on real-life events they are also based on real-life individuals one of whom is related to the author. Wow, what people had to endure because of the war, it is incredible. Gisela is on the run from the Russians and is trying to take her family home. Mitch is about to get killed but Gisela saves him. Now they are trying to keep their little band alive as they make they way, however possible, across Europe. This is a story about how individuals can determine the course for the many, either for the bad or the good. Gisela and Mitch are wonderfully crafted characters that we draw very close to and root for them to succeed. "Daisies Are Forever" is a wonderful, interesting story with power and depth that will keep you flipping pages. I recommend this book highly and I do look forward to the next book from this highly talented author.

I love finding exceptional novels that are written with World War 2 as their backdrop. So often when we think about World War 2, it's something that can be easily glossed over from what we read in a couple of pages in a history book, but for those that lived among what was happening in countries like Germany and France, it's a whole different picture.

When I was invited to review Daisies Are Forever from author Liz Tolsma, I knew this would be something more than your typical love story of people who discover each other in the war. This was and is so much more than that. First of all, it is told from some aspects of historical fact as you will discover when you get to the end of the book and share the author's insight's into her creation of this compelling novel. The first half is told from the story of Ruth Sabine Hildegard Lippert who at seventeen had to flee from the many bombings that were taking place from the Russian planes to get back home any way she could. The second half of the novel was told from the memories of Liz Tolsma's Aunt Lillian Tolsma who moved from the United States to Germany in the late 1930's just before the outbreak of the war. These two wonderful facets created such a powerful story, the reader can't help but be captivated to know who will make it home and who will pay the ultimate price.

Twenty-year-old Gisela Cramer has received warning that she must flee from her home leaving behind her ailing Grandfather who is simply too weak to travel along with her older sister Ella. She vows to take care of Ella's two younger daughters Annelies and Renate and get them to safety in Berlin. As much as she doesn't want to leave them behind, she knows if she stays they won't survive. They will all be sent away to camps or possibly killed before they make it that far. Even as her grandfather ensures her they will join her, she has to face the compelling journey with her neighbors and stay one step ahead of the Russian army.

She doesn't expect help to come from Mitch Edwards, a British POW who is impersonating a German SS officer who has been wounded. But when his attempt at the German language is questioned, Gisela convinces those around them, he is her husband who was brought up in a German -American home and often gets confused with his attempts at communication. Without Gisela's help, he would be sent back to the POW camp or worse, hung as a traitor. Now they will have to face the odds of both his shortcomings being in disguise as they attempt to make their way amid being shot at by soldiers and bombed by Russian planes as they join hundreds of others trying to flee for safety. Will they make it to safety or will one of them pay the ultimate sacrifice of laying down their life for someone they love? You'll definitely want to pick this one up to find out.

I received Daisies Are Forever by Liz Tolsma compliments of Thomas Nelson Publishers and Litfuse Publicity for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions contained in this review are strictly my own. If you are a lover of historical romance or WWII fiction, than you will absolutely love the heart racing action and danger you will find behind the cover of this novel. A Reading Group Guide is included at the conclusion of this novel as well as author notes sharing the story of the two women whose stories breathed life into the pages of this novel. I easily give this one a 4.5 out of 5 stars and look forward to many more from this author in the future. If you love this novel, be sure to check out her previous novel Snow on the Tulips.
