B M H Books War: Four Christian Views

"This brief survey reveals several reactions on the part of Christians toward war. These can be categorized as Christian pacifism or non resistance, the just war and the crusade....Because many readers of this book may be called upon to serve in the military if there is another large-scale conflict, it is important to try to arrive at some conclusion about war. Each of the interpretations presented here have devout evangelical Christian adherents.

"It is my hope that these essays and discussions will help readers to formulate their own views about war....armed conflict may be the most pressing problem that global society faces today. Those who follow Jesus Christ must seek to understand his will in relationship to matters of war and peace." -from the introduction by Robert G. Clouse

Each viewpoint is described and supported by a scholar who is an adherent of that view. Authors respond to one another's perspectives and include:

  • Herman A. Hoyt on Nonresistance
  • Myron S. Augsburger on Christian Pacifism
  • Arthur F. Holmes on the Just War
  • Harold O. J. Brown on the Crusade or Preventative War

ONE OF A KIND BOOK...VERY HELPFUL!This book presents and debates 4 differentevangelical Christian views on the moralityof war. The 4 views presented are:1. Limited Non-Resistance by Herman Hoyt2. Absolute Pacifism by Myron Augsburger3. Limited Defensive War by Arthur Holmes4. Preventive First Strike by Harold BronwEach view is presented and then each viewis critiqued by the 3 others. From readingthis book one will definitely learn whatvarious Christian viewpoint exist about warand the ethics of it.No other Christian book that I know treatsthis subject of War like this book. It is a valuable book to own for anyone who wantsto consider what the Bible teaches about theethics of War for a Christian.A similar bookto complement this book on War isSHOW THEM NO MERCY edited by Stan Gundrywhich prsents and debates 4 views onthe ethics of the Israelites carrying out Canaanite genocide under the leadership of Moses and Joshua.
