Frank Page is the President of the Southern Baptist Convention and so you could say that he is a major player within the Baptist world in the US! He also pastors a church in the South and has been a Bible teacher for many years now. His book, The Nehemiah Factor, has a particular focus on mission and leadership. He puts the two together while working through the book of Nehemiah.In 16 chapters Page explains what a missional leader is. He describes a missional leader as a person of godly character, calling, vision, Christlike concern, spiritual faithfulness, prayer, courage, integrity, communication etc etc. I really like the book, it is solidly based on the Bible, with Page always referencing a variety of passages in each chapters. While the structure is kept firm through the continual reference to Nehemiah and his leadership Page also gives a good picture of Jesus and Pauls leadership and priorities also.Page covers a breadth of topics regarding leadership and does so well. His comprehensiveness regarding the topic and Scripture is great to see. A greater use of practical real life illustrations would be great so as to ground the book in practical theology too.Become a New Hope Book Review Blogger.

The layout of the book is very logical as it takes the reader on a journey from anoriginal calling to ministry to the final victory of a successful ministry and relationshipwith God, with all the Godly steps needed to fill in the holes of any wishful missionalleader. For myself, the chapter entitled A Missional Leader is a Person of ChristlikeConcern establishes itself well beyond the rest. It creates an atmosphere that the readercan call into question motives, callings and purposes of vision without making onefeel overwhelmed or inadequate in their leadership skills. Instead, it allows the reader tomake personal connections into the missional ideals of Nehemiah and Jesus in order toenhance the skills and hindsight with which they entered the chapter. The book,primarily, does a fantastic job at clearing up questions about the whole missionalmovement. Answering these questions that many leaders have about the whys andhows of a true missional church will only further understanding. I would recommend this book to youth workers or anyone that is in a leadershipposition. Whether you are a cheerleader or not for the popularity of the term missional,the concepts and skills addressed in this book cannot be overlooked. Another thing thatI enjoyed about this book was its abundance of Scripture references beyond the book ofNehemiah, especially when Dr. Page notes a concern that could arise in the area beingcovered and it is noted through Scriptural reference. Lastly, one chapter that I did findlacking comprehension was that discussing time conflict. I though that it was coveredtoo quickly with not enough detail going into explaining both how to be an effective timemanager as well as why it is important to have this asset. Overall, a great read that anyleader (new or old) should pick up for their library.

Dr. Page provides scriptural support for each of the 16 characteristics along with antidotes and commentaries. Upon completing the text, you will have a solid understanding of what it is to be a true missional leader.Once I had completed reading The Nehemiah Factor; 16 Characteristics of a Missional Leader by Dr. Frank Page, I came to the conclusion that God desires each ministry leader be a missional leader. As we grow into the image of Christ, each of the 16 Characteristics discussed in this book will develop and deepen. How can I be so certain of this? Because each of the characteristics discussed were exemplified in Christ as He walked out His ministry. For example, one of the characteristics discussed is integrity. Dr. Page wrote the following in regards to integrity and the life of Nehemiah, a leader who desired nothing more than to do Gods will.Nehemiahs integrity was a great factor in his leadership and ability. It is interesting to note that the enemies and detractors of Nehemiahs ministry could never speak about any kind of personal failing that they might use to stop the building of the wall or to report to the king. Even the false rumors his detractors tried to spread were not personal in nature at all. In fact, Nehemiah speaks about the opposition who was hired, so that I would be intimidated, do as he suggested, sin and get a bad reputation, in order that they could discredit me (6:13). But Nehemiahs life of integrity protected him from scandal. (pg. 132)Take time to read the 16 chapters of this book that discuss each of the characteristics necessary of a missional leader. Place yourself before the mirror of this text and determine which areas need attention, make the changes necessary to become the missional leader God intended. I have.
