I was asked to read & review a devotional book for teenaged girls by Jonathan Howe of New Hope Publishers. At first, I was very reluctant to pick it up, fearing I would be disappointed with style and content: syrupy, gushy-type writing for young girls and void of much meat or meaning. Thankfully, I was greatly disappointed from my initial sinfully low expectations. Chandra Peel has put together a deeply meaningful, soundly biblical, heady book of devotions for young girls. She has the reader ask some solid questions of the text, as well as of herself. There are plenty of personal anecdotes, analogies and illustrations to keep a teen interested and hooked. The marketing description talked of her "conversational style," sort of like having a big sister sit down with you and help you through these passages and questions. Well, the author does a fine job of that as well. I've often wondered what it would have been like having an older brother, one who could have mentored me in the Word and life in Christ. For teen girls, seeking that kind of experience as they seek to follow Christ, I think they'll find it here in Cherished.Seeking to put Christ first and at the center, Peele explores what it means to choose Jesus, which is choosing freedom and choosing love real, true, biblical love (not the kind of mushy, fantasy romantic feelings one would get in a modern teen romance novel. Moving on from there, she'll take the reader on a journey of what it means to really love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, body and soul. I think many a teen would enjoy this guide and benefit greatly from it.I have a copy of this book to give away. Just post a comment and I'll have a "drawing" in a week to determine the winner. You'll need to contact me with your contact information as well so I can get the book to you. Just use the email contact form on the right side of this page.
