Review 1 for What Can I Do with My Guilt?
Date:July 12, 2014
I was very intrigued with this next book in the series. It seems as though guilt is an all too often occurrence but is rarely discussed or properly dealt with. Since it’s inevitable that everyone has experienced some level of guilt, I was eager to see how Sproul approached this subject.
Initially, Sproul discusses a general overview of guilt, creating a solid basis to stand on for understanding its many facets: what is it, where it comes from, whether it’s subjective or objective, and how it relates to us as humans. He continues by differentiating between guilt and the feelings of guilt. This is a vital distinction if one is to truly assess their guilt and the holiness of God.
He touches on the most prevalent techniques people use to deal with their guilt. From denial, to rationalization, and even acts of atonement, Sproul explains their faultiness and why it’s so easy to fall prey to these obstructive solutions.
He also reveals personal wisdom in illustrations from his own life, as professor and pastor. Since personal experience is a powerful motivator, this provides a level of authority to what he argues in the book.
As a conclusion, Sproul discusses the cure for guilt: forgiveness. He essentially covers the basics of the Gospel in this section. He also addresses the concern so many have: if I am forgiven through Christ why can’t I release my guilt?
I did appreciate that he wrote this book in a way that allowed for discussion about guilt with non-Christians.
