Prayers power and necessity are integral parts of the characters. Zhen Li's choices make you wonder what you could endure for your faith. I particularly loved how intertwined people's lives were without their knowledge. Be faithful is the message.

This book will stir your heart and challenge your faith. Red Ink confronts the harsh trials Christians are facing Communist China, especially in dealing with the one-child law. This is a carefully and beautifully written book that will prompt you to pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ who live in China. Many thanks to Kathi Macias for writing this compelling book.

I was shocked by this book.
Not by the true horrors of the Chinese prisons and human rights violation's therein, which should shock and outrage us but by the presentation.
I understood that this book would be harsh when I received it but I have read and heard about these harsh subjects before and read other books by the author, but I found this book shocking.
The was too much information about teenage Maggie's immoral and promiscuous life and her immoral boy friend.
Also there was entirely too much information about perverse sexuality in both the prison and Maggie's life I believe that because these was part of both these characters lives it deserved to be told however it could have been told instead of described.
I was unable to finish this novel, and honestly wanted to steam clean my brain when I put it down.
I fear that this novel will be a stumbling block to unsuspecting readers who wish to read about Christian persecution and instead will find unnecessary content that could have been left out.
I pray my review will not offend anyone, I don't want to offend anyone, but I do want to not put any stumbling block in front of myself or anyone else, please understand that I love the author, she is a sister in Christ! I truly wish no other people will read this while looking for a book about a much needed subject.

Kathi Macias' works of Christian fiction are a blessing to all those who read. Red Ink is my personal favorite. In this book she brings the character Zhen-Li to life. As Zhen-Li stands on her faith despite the impending consequences, you can't help but feel you are right there beside her, beckoning her to go on. This is a beautiful read and I highly recommend it. You will not be disappointed.

My Thoughts
Because Yang Zen-Li chooses to deny her faith in Christ, she is serving ten years in a China prison camp. This leaves her husband and sister-in-law to take care of their young son. Evil is all around in the prison camp and prison guard Tai Tong is among one of the most brutal and is full of hatred for the prisoners. Knowing how this prisoner treats her cell mate, Yang is fearful of what will happen to her if she doesn’t do what he wants.
Meanwhile Julia, a grandmother in a California nursing home thinks back to the time she and her husband served time in China as missionaries. As she is thinking about this, the Lord lays on her heart to pray for a woman in China.
In Red Ink, Kathi Macias tells another heartbreaking story of horrific things happening to Christian’s who stand up for their faith. Sadly, this is loosely based on a true story, and knowing there are women in China going through what this young lady did in this story has caused me to start praying more for those in other countries sharing God’s Word. To think there are people that actually face these things gives me chills. In Red Ink, Kathi again captures our hearts with unbelievable characters that are unique and play their parts in the story so powerful that you feel their pain, and their joy in knowing the Lord. This heartbreaking story tells the power of God’s love and protection in our lives. The faith of Yang Zheng-Li is amazing. I was in tears at the end of the story. I won’t share it, you need to buy the book and read it, but it is such an amazing part of the book, and truly shows what can happen if Christians share Christ, no matter how difficult the circumstances.
I love this book, and all of Kathi Macias’ books that I’ve read. If she is a new author for you, it is a MUST that you grab a copy of her books and read them. They will stay with you for a long time, and they will truly change you life.
I received this book from the author to read and review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 55.

Red Ink juxtaposes two compelling stories—the life of Chinese Christians Zhen-Li and her husband, Zhou Chi, is interwoven with that of several residents in a retirement center and Maggie, the wayward granddaughter of one of the women. Julia, one of the senior residents, continues to pray for the people of China, a country where she and her late husband had once ministered. This ties binds the two tales.
Zhen-Li had been raised in a home that firmly supported the Party. She rejected her parents’ training to accept Christ as her Savior, and was arrested for teaching religion to children. Her ten-year sentence proves a nightmare. Even in the midst of her suffering Zhen-Li reaches out to her traitorous cellmate, Mei, and continues to witness to her despite further threats. The guard Tai Tong vows to destroy Zhen-Li’s faith, but he underestimated the power of God in her life.
The miraculous ending could only be orchestrated by the Lord. This story of redemption—both physical and spiritual begs to be read. I recommend the entire Extreme Devotion series, of which this is book three. All contain challenging stories of faith and its triumph in the midst of adversity. Thanks, Kathi Macias, for your boldness in sharing these true-to-life tales of believers facing persecution.

This is the third in the Extreme Devotion Series, books by Macias about Christians with overcoming faith in the face of persecution.
Zhen-Li is in prison because of her faith. She was raised to adhere to the part line but fell in love with a Christian and married him. When she was pregnant with her second child, she refused the ordered abortion. It happened anyway when her father had her kidnapped and the baby was forcibly aborted. Trained as a teacher, she spoke of Yesu with children. Now she was paying the price. Ten years of hard labor and “reeducation.”
Tai Tong is a guard in the prison. He is a mean man and is determined to break Zhen-Li. He will make her deny her Yesu by beating her and then taking her for himself. He will stop at nothing, even killing her husband and son if that is what it takes. Will Zhen-Li have the strength to be faithful to her Savior?
Interspersed with Zhen-Li's story is that of Julia Crockett, in an assisted living home in California. She and her husband has made a mission trip to China and she had hoped to go back again. But her husband has been dead for twenty years. Yet she still felt the burden of China and prayed for the Christians there. Her prayer partner is her good friend Laura.
A new resident in the home is cranky Margaret. Julia tries to befriend her but Margaret is so full of hurt, Julia is put off.
Julia and Laura pray faithfully for China and frequently feel a burden for someone in immediate need of strength. It is at those times Zhen-Li is facing Tong's wrath. When the women meet Margaret's granddaughter, they know she needs prayer too. She is heading for danger with her rebellious lifestyle. Will she be rescued before she is sold into sex slavery?
This is a rewarding read. Macias kept my interest throughout the novel as the various stories are woven together. The story is based loosely on the life of Christian magazine editor Li Ying, currently serving a ten year sentence in China.
My only disappointment was the ending to Zhen-Li's story. Even though it appeared positive, the future is uncertain. Nonetheless, the novel helps the reader understand the situation for Christians in China.

Yang Zhen-Li is in prison for teaching religion to children and sharing her faith with others. She has been beaten and now faces being raped and beaten some more by an evil guard who makes it his challenge to break her down. He wants Yang Zhen-Li to deny her faith and go along with the government rules.
Julia is in an assisted living facility and a prayer warrior. God is placing on her heart a need to pray. She and her now deceased husband had been on a mission trip to China years before. Julia realizes that God wants her to pray for some one in China that is in dire need of prayer.
Laura is a good friend and a prayer warrior with Julia. Laura is in the same assisted living facility as Julia.
Maggie is a wayward teen-ager that ends up in a dangerous situation with Jake. She is in love with Jake and believes his every word.
Margaret is a bitter old lady living in the same assisted living facility that Julia and Laura lives in and is Maggie's grandmother.
This book is about standing up for what you believe in and even be willing to die for that belief. It is also about intercessory prayer; even if the person that needs prayer is in a far off country. Prayer can and does change people’s hearts!
Kathi Macias brought the characters and their stories in this book to life. I could not put this book down. I found myself praying for these characters myself and was saddened by what these characters went through, but thrilled that God was in Control in each situation. I was taken back by how this book ended. I asked myself, could it have ended any other way?

John 8:32 states, “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” In Kathi Macias’s book, Red Ink, a young Chinese woman, Zhen-Li, marries a Christian and adopts his faith. When she becomes pregnant for the second time and refuses to observe the Chinese law of one child per family, she is kidnapped, and the baby is aborted. Zhen-Li’s name means “truth,” and she learns to take a stand for her faith in her community and later in prison. This book tells a gripping tale of what happens in China behind prison doors, a subject we all need to become aware of as our country becomes more involved in trade with China. God strengthens Zhen-Li’s faith as she ministers to fellow prisoners and even her guards under the most difficult of circumstances. You won't be able to put this book down!

This book was very interesting. Even though it is fiction, it could be a real life story too. Especially the China part is how it really can go for a Chinese believer.
The story can be shocking at times. How can people be so cruel to each other!
This story is an eye-opener and a call for more prayer for people living in persecution.

Had me from the get-go. Kathi Macias’ RED INK kept me turning pages from prologue to final chapter. What an amazing story of God’s love, protection and of how He so graciously moves in response to our prayer. From a Chinese prison to a senior adult home to a teen teetering on self-destruction—and picking up several compelling sites and characters in between—Red Ink delivers a beautiful reminder of the power of prayer and an inspiration to stay faithful in sharing Christ.
Loved the umbrella message that the answer to every difficult decision, every challenge of every size—even the most extreme persecution—is always Jesus, and that our hope is always well-placed and perfectly secure in Him.

Red Ink by Kathi Macias is the third book in her powerful Extreme Devotion series about Christians under fire for their faith around the world. Yang Zheng-Li is serving ten years in a Chinese prison camp for distributing Christian materials to children and for refusing to deny her faith in Jesus Christ. Her parents are ashamed of their daughter's refusal to comply with the State, and even kidnapped her and aborted her second child in hopes of gaining her compliance. Even her husband, Zhou Chi, who was raised as a Christian is having a difficult time understanding why Zheng-Li couldn't have just kept her faith a little more under wraps like he does, especially now that he's raising their son, Zhou Chan, alone with his widowed sister. When Zheng-Li catches the eye of the most brutal prison guard, Tai Tong, she begins living every moment in fear of what this man known for his violence will do to her. Back in a California rest home, Julia, misses her freedom and her days of serving as a missionary in China with her husband when she suddenly feels the strong urge to pray for a unknown woman in China. When a new resident, Margaret, moves into the rest home with a terrible attitude, Julie adds both Margaret, and her fifteen-year-old troubled granddaughter into her prayers as well. I've enjoyed the previous entries in this series, but I think this must be the most powerful and best book yet. I didn't want to believe that Zheng-Li's story was happening in the world today. The abuse and degradation she and other Christians are facing in China right now is unimaginable, but Macias does a great job of putting readers into this frightening world where even in the midst of incredible darkness, God continues to show His face to the ones He loves. While the parallel stories never truly come together, there is much drama and suspense in each, as well as an unexpected attack on Christianity in the rest home. Macias truly caught me off guard with her ending. It was both surprising and heart-breaking. This compelling novel gives a grim picture of what Christians face in China, but Macias also portrays a God who never leaves His followers alone, no matter how devastating it is.

RED INK
By Kathi Macias

315 Pages
A young Chinese woman, Zhen-Li--raised to observe the party line, including its one-child-per-family doctrine--falls in love with and marries a Christian, and adopts his faith. Though the couple downplays their Christianity in an effort to survive, Zhen-Li's family is appalled, and she and her husband are ostracized.
It is then Zhen-Li decides she must live up to her name--"Truth"--and take a firm stand for her faith, regardless of the consequences, and so she begins to regularly teach children about Zhu Yesu ("Lord Jesus")
Based loosely on the life of Christian magazine editor Li Ying, currently serving a ten-year prison sentence in China, the story of Yang Zhen-Li tells the desperate tale of her incarceration and separation from her family, as she continues to minister to other prisoners, and even to her guards.
This book takes place inside the River Valley nursing home, inside a terrible prison in China, and with a young girl being led into being a sex slave. This booked lived up to Extreme Devotion. It was interesting to how the power of prayer was working in all of these lives.
I would highly recommend this book, once you start reading it is hard to put down.

RED INK
Kathi Macias’s Red Ink is a story of standing up for your beliefs in the face of extreme adversity, a willingness to give up everything, except the One you profess to follow, and of finding forgiveness and peace even after living a life that deserves only payback and condemnation. This book gives you what every reader wants—a strong emotional experience and a powerful takeaway, brought to life by unforgettable characters who wheedle their way into your mind. And your heart.
Imprisoned in Beijing for her faith, Zhen Li possesses a courage we only dream of. Her husband, Chi, while striving to provide for his small son and widowed sister, struggles with his personal convictions and longs to take his wife’s place. The weak and guilt-ridden Mei reveals to their captors that her cellmate, Zhen Li, continues to tell stories and sing songs of Zhu Yesu. The terrifying guard, Tai Tong, has one goal—to destroy Zhen-Li and the faith she will not give up. In California, teenage Maggie almost destroys her life to attain the love and acceptance she yearns for, while her grandmother, Margaret, spews resentment and vengeance. And the elderly Julia, a resident of River View Manor, prays for them all.
Red Ink is one of those of books—the kind you don’t want to end and will never forget, what every author wishes he or she would have written. No one can turn the last page and come away the same. This heart-stirring testimony of valor and compassion will change you forever.

"They took her child, her family, and her freedom - but not her faith" is the tag line on the front and the first thing bout Red Ink by Kathi Macias that caught my attention, but certainly not the last.
From the teen drug addict lured into sex trafficking to Zhen-Li's persecution in China for her belief in Christ to the elderly residents turned prayer warriors in the assisted living home, Red Ink weaves an intricate story of persecution, faith, hope and the power of prayer. You will walk away from this story compelled to pay more attention to those fleeting urges to pray for others and with a greater awareness of what faces the underground church around the world and the people in your day-to-day life.
I appreciate the perspective that Kathi Macias offers in this series and I look forward to reading more.

As I begin this book review I first must share that Kathi Macias is one of those authors that stands out among all others. Her writing style is motivated by a deep faith in Christ. She not only tells a story, but within that story she brings out hope. A true hope that is there for all. We see the pain of those around us and just how God moves through each circumstance in our lives. In each story she gives testimony of God's greatness. She shares characters we can all relate to and within the pages we find ourselves as we learn about others. Red Ink is at the top of my favorites list. It is one I will share with others. As each chapter passes Kathi brings you deeper into the story and you are just waiting to see what God is going to do next.
When I began turning pages I could not stop. We see that we are all connected in one way or another. God reaches out to us to intercede for others. That is where we find Laura and Julia. They are friends, sisters in Christ, who are prayer warriors. God is doing a work through these willing vessels who are connected to others in Christ that they may never meet on this side of heaven. These ladies stand out with such strong faith. They are working to reach others and God has a plan to do just that. I found myself wanting to follow their example.
We also meet Maggie, a young girl in trouble. She has lost her way, but thinks she has found love in one man, Jake. But Jake is not who she thinks he is. While he is feeding her drugs he has plans for this young girl that will change her life forever. She is searching for love, but looking in the wrong places. She is in a pit of despair, but there is a God above who is watching her every move. There is a God above who is about to bring a change of His own in the lives surrounding Maggie. My heart was breaking for Maggie through this story. I wanted to see her overcome every obstacle in her way.
We now meet beautiful Zhen Li, a Chinese woman, who is not afraid to share her faith. A mother, a wife, and a daughter of the King of kings. She is imprisoned for sharing her faith, but this does not stop her. As tears fell I wanted to reach out to her myself. I just wanted to comfort her as she was comforting her friend, Mei, who shared a prison cell together. Persecution is alive between these walls. As each breath comes Zhen Li must make a choice. She chooses Christ and through her, life changes for others in her path. She is determined, she is brave, and she finds all the strength to face each day in her Lord Jesus Christ. We see what happens not only to Zhen Li, but to her family, the very parents who turned away from her for the faith she stood for.
We learn to not quiet the Spirit, but pray without ceasing. We learn to stand strong in Christ even when we are unsure of the consequences we face. We have a mighty God who is stronger than any prison cell or captor. This is a beautiful story. It is a powerful story. It is one that everyone should read. Red Ink is the third book of the Extreme Devotion Series. It follows No Greater Love and More Than Conquerors. I promise my friends, you will be blessed beyond words as you meet Zhen Li and those who are tied to the Red Ink of our Lord who gave His life for us.
This book was a gift by Kathi Macias for it's review.

With a busy schedule, I decided that reading one or two chapters from Red Ink each day would be manageable. Never did I dream I would stay up until 1:30 a.m. to finish Red Ink, the third book in Kathi Macias’ Extreme Devotion Series of Fiction with a Mission.
The story of Zhen-Li’s love of God, her heart for evangelism regardless of the consequences, and her incarceration made me realize the freedom of religion we take for granted. Kathi Macias has woven the stories of Zhen-Li in China, the two women at River Manor in the USA and the story of Maggie, the young girl caught up in a nightmare of drugs and human trafficking. Maggie is the granddaughter of Margaret at River Manor. Macias shows how the power of prayer changes lives. The hope throughout this book is in contrast to the horrendous religious persecution. I highly recommend this book.

Warning: If you read only feel-good romance novels to escape your humdrum life, Red Ink by award-winning author Kathi Macias will shock you. If you pray for your family, friends, and neighbors, but have never considered interceding for the persecuted church in other lands, Red Ink will force your spiritual eyes open. And if you wish to stay ignorant to the evils around you so you don’t have to take action to change them, Red Ink will anger you.
But if you care for more than your own comfort and entertainment, Macias’ newest volume in the Extreme Devotion series will move your heart and call you to you to your knees.
From the back cover: “Based loosely on the life of Christian magazine editor Li Ying currently serving a ten-year prison sentence in China, the story of Yang Shan-Li tells the desperate tale of her incarceration and separation from her family, as she continues to minister to other prisoners, and even to her guards.”
This heart-stirring novel also addresses the issues of human trafficking¸ standing for Jesus in the face of brutality, loving those who are impervious to the Gospel, and following the Holy Spirit’s call to pray at the cost of our own comfort. In spite of the challenging topics, Macias writes tastefully, weaving her usual grace wit throughout the pages, and resolving the painful conflicts with satisfying endings.
Although I would not have chosen to read a book of this type, I’m not sorry I did. Macias’ perspective-changing story made me aware of what others suffer for the cause of Jesus Christ, and the terrible price they pay to keep the Gospel alive. It convicted me to admit how complacent I’ve been in my walk with the Lord, and how I’ve taken my freedom to worship and witness for granted. It urged me to pray for the persecuted church, as well as innocent victims of horrible crimes in our own nation.
Kathi Macias is not only an excellent writer, but also a courageous lady. I applaud her for writing the Red Ink¸ and pray that all who read it will be as deeply challenged and changed as I was.
